Every child who is interested should have a camp experience. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the camp experience has been proven to have a lasting effect on psychosocial development, including significant effects on self-esteem, peer relationships, independence, leadership values and willingness to try new things. They stated that camps also offer an opportunity to overcome a lack of connection with the natural environment which has been associated with depression, attention disorders and obesity. In general camps are great at addressing public health priorities like obesity and related cardiovascular risk factors because they usually include at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity and are required to follow the same nutrition guidelines as the schools.

Our area is home to some of the finest camps in the country. We have Camp Giddy-Up Ravenwood Riding Academy where your child can learn to ride, make new friends and learn about horses in a fun but safe environment. There are daily lessons grouped by skill level, a shaded riding area and demonstrations with blacksmiths and veterinarians. There are dance, gymnastics, martial arts studis where your child can receive professional instruction and education in a warm atmosphere. We also have preschools, private schools and county facities where

kids can partake in activities that are stimulating mentally as well as physically. There are themes such as under the sea, be an artist, science, the jungle and party in the U.S.A. along with relevant activities and field trips.

You may think you will find the best camp by talking to a friend or neighbor but what works for one kid is not necessarily the greatest fit for the next. “You know your child better than anyone else,” said Katie Johnson, southeastern field office executive at the American Camp Association. The same applies to judging readiness for camp. “Your confidence that they are ready for a new experience away from home is the key,” said Johnson. Age is usually a major factor. “Day camp is better for younger children,” said Johnson. Consider whether your child has spent time away from home before with friends or grandparents. “It might be smart to practice a separation period and see how your child does,” said Johnson.

Make the decision about camp with your child. You can talk about where he wants to go and what he would like to pack. “Keep in mind your child’s maturity but if he feels a part of the decision-making process, his chances of having a positive experience will improve,” said Johnson. Some kids are nervous or feel uneasy about going away. “Communicate confidence in your child’s

ability to handle being away from home,” said Johnson. Sometimes just letting him know that you believe in him can make the difference. Be realistic about your view of camp and know that it can be an adjustment. “Send a familiar object such as a stuffed animal or blanket,” said Johnson.

Before camp begins, share some information with the camp about your child including his health history. It is important that they are aware of any previous illnesses, surgeries, injuries or allergies as well as his present state of physical and psychological health. Kids with asthma, diabetes or another chronic health condition should be cleared by their physician before participating in camp. Usually as long as there is an agreed upon management plan your child will do fine. It is also a good idea to check to make sure that your child is in compliance with the recommended childhood immunization schedule that is put out each year by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Every child responds to his first time at camp in a different manner. “Some campers may have bouts of homesickness and counselors, directors and camp nurses are prepared and trained to deal with and help prevent it,” said Johnson. By being open

about your child’s background, interests and needs, you can ensure that he receives the best care and attention possible. “If your child has any special dietary or medical needs it is best to address those with the camp before your camper even arrives so they can be well-prepared to handle any special circumstances,” said Johnson. Most of all, stay positive. Let your child know that when he comes home he will have lots of wonderful stories and memories to share with you.
