1 Once again we are planning on a week for Spring Break at Gordon’s Well in Late March and Early April. This is still a few weeks before Easter, but is when members had the time off. Even if you don’t have much extra time off, you can still plan on back to back weekends at the dunes and know that there will be people to watch your stuff in between their trips into Yuma. Janece is looking into having club flags made, and hopefully we should have samples soon. Dave Huggard has been looking into screen printing, and we are comparing quotes on a new batch of club shirts. Lets go to Dumont in April! We are planning a 2 day Dumont trip for the weekend of April 17-19th. For at least the sixth year in a row, Inland Empire Offroad spent a week atthe dunes over Presidents day. This year we decided to head out for Presi-dents day weekend and stay the following week. With the increasing num-ber of retirees in the club, the crowd who could stay all week has grown aswell. This year Walt, Nancy Kastle, The Tranthams, and The Porters spentthe week with Don and Shirley Ford. Some of the rest of us who still had tomake it look like we were working during the week left on Monday and re-turned later in the week, including Jim Kastle, Steve and Janice Tharp, Johnand Scott Cole, Melissa, and me. On the first weekend we were joined bylots of other club members, including the Huggards, Olivers, Martines,Stuttes, Grossmanns (including Janece, the club’s official poet), DeanCarver, and more. It was a pretty big camp. Fortunately everybody was ableto make it to the camp at Wash 4, even with the new railroad fence. Forthose of you who haven’t seen it, the Union Pacific Railroad has decided tofence off their right of way, which includes the wash road. Later this yeartheir plan is to close off access to it com-pletely. Fortunately the BLM has gradeda road next to the fence to wash 7 sowe’ll be able to get in, but it could bemore crowded if people can’t get to thefurther washes.

There were again some new toys outfor Presidents week, with the Tranthamsmaking their second trip with their beau-tiful new Northstar powered mid-enginecar. Don Ford brought out his V-8 frontengine car for its second trip as well, andhe has it running very well. It had theopportunity to tow Scott Cole a couple of times and did a great job of it.There is video of his roost posted on the website. Sharon Porter has a newPolaris RZR that she enjoyed cruising around in, and the Martines broughtout their new to them Rhino instead of the sandrail for the first weekend, and

seemed to have fun with it. Now they have that all too common problem oftrying to decide which toys to make room for in the trailer. Maybe the answeris a bigger trailer?

There were, as usual, some technical challenges during the week as well, butas is common with the club we overcame them. Most notable was probablyScott’s clutch and then transmissions, which found it difficult to hold up to hisV8. He sheared a woodruff key and stripped the splines on the CV cups thefirst weekend, and lost a clutch disk and a ring and pinion the second weekend. Most importantly though, he drove it in the trailer at the end of the weekend. We did have a club first when on Saturday’s night ride we ended up replacingthe transmission in the dunes. We were 3.6 miles from camp near the bigbowls, and since it was only about 9:30 PM we decided that some of us wouldrun back to camp to get the spare while John and Scott removed the brokentrans. Once we got there with the spare we had the car running in 45 minutes and were back in camp by 12:30AM. Notbad for a field fix. We also installed power steering on Don Ford’s car, which using the Char Lynn style unit he got wasreally pretty neat. It is a single unit that hooks to the pump and installs in line in the steering shaft. No additional ram isneeded, since the unit generates torque to steer the rack and resist feedback in the wheel. Don says it feel like it made asmuch difference as power steering does on a regular street car.

With two weekends a row at the dunes, that meant we got to have pizza at MamaJeannie’s two Saturdays in a row. The food was great as always, and Inland Empire had thelargest group in the restaurant on both weekends. With only one more Glamis trip planned this season,we gotta get in our pizza while we can.

We had 9 cars out there for the second weekend, which is pretty good for an off weekend a week aftera holiday. There were lots of great rides during both

weekends of the trip. and apparently some good ones during the week too, in-cluding those into Yuma to get food and buggy parts. Lots of members are look-ing forward to the Gordon’s Well trip just because Yuma is even closer, allowingfor lots of great meals, maybe even every night…

Overall it was a great dune trip, andI look forward to hearing more aboutit, especially from those lucky enough to spend more time out there than wedid. I really appreciate the opportunity to leave the stuff set up out there forback to back weekends, since it saves quite a bit in fuel and storage costs, notto mention allowing for two fun weekends in a row. Thanks to everyone whohelped to continue this Inland Empire Offroad tradition.-P.J.

As with any organization there are guidelines we operate within. Please read and abide by the following:1. NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED WITHIN CAMP BOUNDRIES2. DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law)3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND

YOU. If they stop, you stop and wait for the group to return to you. This prevents separation and in this manner wenever leave a member in the dunes. Remember, it’s easier to find you if you stay still: “a moving target is harder to hit”

4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISHTO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and thenstick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if youare waved on by the driver ahead of you.

5. REMEMBER, WE ARE A GROUP OF FRIENDS who share a common interest in riding in the desert. Always keep inmind how your actions affect the other members.
