to camp. Got the buggy out for the next ride, and we were off again. Mamma Jeannie invited me over for a home cooked dinner Friday night, had Spa-ghetti and meet the family. And Saturday morning while the “Pit-crew” were fix-ing Don’s broken ‘A’ arm, I had break-fast there too. ( was tired of cold cereal) and of course we all went for Pizza, beer and burgers Saturday night. Sunday morning, Janece made Pancakes for the whole camp, that was great Thanx Jan-ece!!!!! On the Sunday ride, Scott hit a Witches Eye and created some new chal-lenges for us in the dunes, and we got to use Don’s new winch. (but there are no pictures, thus no evidence, so maybe it never really happened!!????! And all was repaired, and we headed back to camp. While packing up, the Rangers came by and said to look out for a Black Chevy pick-up with a white box trailer, that had been reported stealing motorcycles. After we had loaded a little firewood into the work

trailer for next time, there was enough left for me to have a good fire Sunday night, and if you think they go to bed just because it’s Sunday night, you would be wrong. And here it is, time to go back, and do it all over again for Veterans Day, Cya in the dunes -Walt

(Continued from page 1)

At the November club meeting, Melissa and I brought up the concept of the club members contributing to purchase an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) to keep in camp. In a recent CPR class, we learned that AED use can significantly increase a person’s chances for survival if they experience sudden cardiac arrest. Every minute without cardiac defibrillation decreases the patient’s survival chances by about 10%. Public access defibrillators instruct the rescuers in their use, and some even monitor the effectiveness of CPR to make it as effective as possible and help reassure the rescuers, which in this case would be other club members. After researching available units, we decided we would really like to purchase a Zoll AED Plus, which includes CPR coaching, cheap replacement batteries, and simple to use single chest pads. This unit will likely cost $1,500 with the required acces-sories after we get a discount online. The club will provide up to $500 of the cost, and at the meeting we got $300 in additional pledges. We will be collecting pledge forms from club members that list the maximum amount they would be willing to contribute. Then, once we have a total maximum amount and a total cost, we will determine what percentage of the pledges will be required. For example, if we get $2000 total in maximum pledges and the device and supplies will cost $1500, each member will contribute 75% of their maximum pledge amount. We’ll have sign up sheets at Thanksgiving and on the website, so please contribute what you can. –PJ

The Rooster Spooktacular Run 2010 Our preparations for the 2010 Spooktacular Run at Salton Sea Beach took a turn for the worse a week before we were set

to leave when AJ’s bike lost compression, and required some major surgery. As it turned out he had a piece of foreign material had gotten stuck between a valve and seat. We had the local shop do a complete valve job and install new springs. Good thing the valves were OK, as they are titanium and cost over $150.00 each, and there are 5 of them! OUCH! We got it all put back

together and running the day before we left, and I almost broke my foot trying to start the darn thing! Kick starting these beasts is for the young! We arrived at the Salton Sea Beach Marina Friday morning just as the Huggards, the Stumps, and the Schellingers ar-rived. The Fords, the Olivers, and Pete Hagen arrived shortly thereafter. We went for a short ride Friday afternoon and conditions were great. Recent rain kept the dust down and the temps were perfect. Friday night we had a nice pot-luck dinner with everyone contributing some great food, then a nice camp fire to close out the evening. Saturday morning we were all up and ready to go. Everyone got there poker slips and we were off.

On our way after lunch we came across a big mud hole on the trail. Even with all the encouragement and ridicule we couldn’t get Shirley to baptize the new RZR, but then Pete stepped up and charged through with the Bronco! Then just as I was putting the camera away Lavon, despite the pleas of mercy from Jeff, charged right through baptizing their new RZR! Lavon was my

hero, but Jeff gave me a lot of dirty looks the rest of the day! I guess I know who was going to have to clean it after it’s mud bath! After a small fiasco trying to get back under Hwy 86 and back to camp we all made it, tired, dirty, but a lot of fun. That night we had a group hot dog roast and another camp fire. The next day at the raffle the Fords cleaned up winning a number of prizes. We went for a morning ride to the Honda Monument, then went for an afternoon ride down to Salton City so Walt could return his borrowed Rhino. The Fords provided some nice steaks that we grilled up for a group dinner Sunday. All in all a great time, with great people, great weather, and great riding. See you all at Thanksgiving! -Mike Bacon

Walt Fisher, Financier! As many of you know by now, Walt Fisher recently invested in a new Polaris RZR to compliment his beautiful buggy. What many of you don’t know is all the wheeling and dealing Walt had to do to get it. The buying, selling and trading of buggies, parts, and even a quad were involved, but that’s not all. In these super secret spy photos, Walt was caught in the act of “financing” his new RZR purchase! He even borrowed a friend’s Rhino to haul his “finances” back to camp! Good Luck Walt, and keep the rubber side down!

Spook Run At the Salton Sea By Walt There was a good turn out of club members for this event. AJ came with Mike and Mona, Danna and Dillon came out with Doug and Kris, Prior and Kristyn with Little Prior and Alexys were with Don and Shirley,( grand and great grand children), Jason and Crystal and Matt and Amber came out with Jeff and Lavon, Dave and Cindy, Gary and Young were parked under the only shade tree, until Pete arrived and joined them with his Bronco. After the registration check-in, my friend George showed up in his Yamaha Rhino. I had taken a 700 Raptor on trade for the buggy I took on trade for “Wet & Dirty” from Dave Medlin. George liked it, so he bought it from me, so when we started the Poker Run, I rode the Raptor to the first card check point, and Crystal rode with George in the Rhino, ( her quad was not running to good), then Crystal rode it to the 2nd card, where after a refresher coarse how to start, back-up and the shift pattern was, George was off on it. He got confused when we stopped to offer assistance to on of Jeremy’s ( Bill Martine’s son-in-law) friends race buggy broke, and took of on his own, and we never saw him until the poker run was over. Because we, Crystal and I, had his cards in the glove box, of the Rhino, (2-5s) she played his hand for him to finish with 4-5’s - Queen high. That paid $250.00. Matt and Amber had a straight, and won $ 175.00. I was working on a straight also, but drew a second 7, ended up with 2-7’s. George had some of our other friends coming out to Ocotillo Wells for the day on Sunday, so he kept the Raptor and left me the Rhino to ride in. Those that were still there Sunday afternoon, Kris & Doug, Mike, Shirley (with little Prior and Alexys) and I took the Rhino back to George’s house at Salton Sea City @ 7 miles, That’s when it started costing me $$$$$ because Shirley rode back with Mike and let me drive her Razor S back to our camp. Alexys rode with me, and helped by steering some. A great time was had by all. On Monday, Don and Shirley took me to the North Shore, and showed me Bombay Beach and “Slab City” an old military base where people set up housekeeping on the abandon slabs. There were some interesting cars, trucks and tractors , as well as the painted mountain. And then on Tuesday, the Ford’s and I headed for Glamis, which is another story. “Treasure Trails” will be in February next year, Cya there. Walt

The Rooster

I just got back from the Veteran’s day trip. It was great, and especially stress free. I had such a great time I want to write a report while it is still fresh in my mind. I left the club meeting about 8:20 and headed off to Glamis. I bought fuel at Red Earth, and headed directly to Glamis. I parked the beetle in the Buggy Night’s trailer space and quickly transferred a few things to the dually and trailer. It was just about midnight, so I expected to arrive and search for camp. Well, while looking for camp I see a razor fire up and point its headlights directly at my truck. Walt claims he got up to use the restroom, but I think he waited up to make it easy on me. Thanks, Walt. During the night there was a strong wind. Thursday morning the visibility was probably about a hundred yards, but the two of us went for a ride. In the big bowls by comp the only tracks were ours, and the wind had lessened somewhat. We stopped by Olds, and for a time were the only ones there. We went back to camp and Dale and Rebecca, along with their dog Wiley, and their brand new car soon arrived. Dale did a beautiful job on the car, with lots of chrome, polished aluminum, and metallic green powder coat. It truly looks professionally done. As with any new car there were a few teething issues, the most annoying being a separated power steering line which spewed oil ALL over the brand new car. Dale and Re-becca spent a lot of time cleaning it up, but sand stuck to the whole car the rest of the weekend. In typical IEOR fashion the teething issues were dealt with and they went on several rides. Dale thought the trans might be making a noise, so he asked me to take a ride and listen. He let me drive, and I was very impressed with the power and smooth ride. The car is a full size four seater, but it seemed very nimble as I drove it. Steve and Janice Tharp and Raimund and Peggy Wagner soon arrived. Raimund has already modified the new-at-Halloween Can Am side by side, having lightened it by nearly 200 pounds, and shortening the bed. Friday morning I inadvertently offended Raimund by inviting him on a slower paced first ride for Dale and Rebecca’s car. Raimund does NOT want to go on any slower paced ride. Same old Raimund, different vehicle. Raimund’s friend, Tim, who also happens to know Sean, arrived Friday and went on some side by side rides with Raimund and some others. On one of the rides Raimund made a jump and found a weakness in the front end. He brought back the broken tie rod and we welded it up strong enough to get it back to camp and in the trailer. I’m sure Raimund has a fix in mind. Raimund reports that a friend of Tim’s took over the repair of the side by side and was a great help. Saturday this same guy had a mishap in his side by side, which required some welding. Raimund knew where to take it, and got to camp just as the buggies were about to leave on a ride. We quickly made the needed weld, and they were off to fix the side by side and we were off on a ride. Later Raimund reported the helpful guy was a school teacher in Hemet, and wants to join the club. I guess he liked our style. I just spoke to him a little, and he seems to be a nice guy. I hate getting old, and didn’t catch his name. Friday night we broke with tradition and went to Pizza Friday instead of Saturday. I figured the leftovers would make good lunches and Saturday dinner, and Friday was Steve and Janice’s anniversary, so dinner at Jeannie’s made sense to all of us. It wasn’t very busy, so we got to talk with Jeannie for quite a while. That’s always fun, but we found we missed out on desert she had planned for

us for Saturday. So much for messing with tradition. Over the four days we went on several rides, on generally pretty smooth sand. I think we made two rides a day, a morning ride and then an afternoon ride that got back to camp after dark. The only mishap was on the Sunday morning ride where I heard a noise from my front end, but didn’t see any obvious (at least to me) problems. I heard another noise, but saw nothing. Then I heard Walt on the radio asking about my front wheel. It was decambered about 30 degrees. It turns out I broke a rod end on the front suspension. We strapped it in place and made the mile long drive back to camp. Steve, Walt, and I quickly re-placed the rod end, and went on a fast ride through the big bowls by comp, which were very smooth due to some overnight winds. We had campfires Friday and Saturday night, and at Saturday’s campfire

Veterans Day: Whoa - whata ride After getting all set up, doing some welding on the Razor, a short nap, and waking just in time for Jim to arrive. After a quick set up of his trailer, it was time for a good nights sleep. First thing Thursday morning, Jim and I set off for the first of many great rides. How does Jim do it? The wind had blow the sand smooth, and there wasn’t any-body else in the dunes, and I had to use 4th gear to keep up with him. After returning to camp, we worked on some things I need to fix on my buggy, waiting for Steve and Janice to start their “anniversary dune trip” to arrive and Dale and Rebecca to debuted their new buggy. (Great job Dale and Rebecca, it looks real good) Dale got some of the bugs worked out before going on a ride. A power steering hose blew off the steering unit, spraying fluid all over the new buggy, then on the next trial run, a hose came off the pump, covering all the parts he missed on the first go-a-round. Rebecca must have used up every towel and rag they had in the motor home to wipe the buggy clean of

power steering fluid! Dale said the shocks were to soft, and made some adjust-ments at the first break on the ride. Raymond and Peggy surprised us when they pulled in, and said a friend, Tim, would be joining us in the morning. Tim had a Rhino, and let Raymond entertain him, while finding out that “Can-Am’s don’t fly to well” Jim bent and welded parts as necessary, and Raymond drove it back to the trailer. In the morning, Dale was fiddling with the brakes, and after the rest of the pit crew helped out, we headed off to ride. Just out of camp, we noticed that Dale and Re-becca weren’t with us. The brakes had frozen up, and they didn’t make it out of camp. Jim, Steve and I went on with the ride. When we got back to camp, Dale had narrowed the brake problem to the turning brakes, and was in the final brake bleed-ing process, and continued to tune on the shocks throughout the weekend. That

was the only ride they missed. For those of you that missed this trip, Sorry, you missed some of the most awesome rides for four days. Yes, the wind blew some, just made the dunes smooth, and even though there was a lot of other people taking advantage of the Vet-erans Day weekend, there wasn’t an overcrowding problem, especially in “Glamis Fun and More Glamis Fun” between hill 3 and 5. On our last ride Sunday morning, I Jim’s front wheel didn’t look right, and for good reason, a “rod-end” had broken and caused him to lead Steve and I back to camp at a slower speed then we were use to. A short pit stop, and we were off again, taking a break at sweat Maries for ice cream. I noticed it didn’t take Jim long to load up, and be ready to go to the storage yard. Ya, putting his work bench into the work/parts trailer was a great idea. For those of you that missed this trip, Sorry, you missed some of the most awe-some rides for these four days. Hope to see you in the dunes soon, Walt

Raimund told of a Veteran’s day observance at the Boardman memorial box. Raimund said it is an annual event at which the flag on the box is replaced, and Veterans are honored. Raimund said about 2000 people attended. We knew nothing of it, but will put it on our calendar for next year. It shows duners at their best, probably explaining why so little is said of it. Dale and Rebecca, Peggy and Raimund, and Tim left Sunday morning before the ride. Packing up my trailer is easy now, as the work bench stays in the Buggy Night trailer. After two trips with the trailer we’re very pleased with the convenience it offers. Walt and I said goodbye to Steve and Janice, and delivered the trailers to the storage yard, and headed home. In just five days we’ll be back for Thanksgiving. I can’t wait.

This month we would like to thank Walt Fisher, Mike Bacon, and Jim Kastle for contributing articles to this month’s newsletter. Please consider contributing to the AED fund that we are working on (see page 2) since it would be terrible to need such a tool and not have one. For a little money we can make a big difference. We finished this newsletter a little early so that we have it off to print before Thanksgiving, and then we’ll get another one out before the end of the year with Thanksgiving trip coverage. - P.J. and Melissa Kastle

As with any organization there are guidelines we operate within. Please read and abide by the following: 1. NO FIREWORKS ALLOWED WITHIN CAMP BOUNDRIES 2. DOGS MUST BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL AT ALL TIMES (BLM law) 3. ON A RIDE, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF YOU AND THE VEHICLE BEHIND

YOU. If they stop, you stop and wait for the group to return to you. This prevents separation and in this manner we never leave a member in the dunes. Remember, it’s easier to find you if you stay still: “a moving target is harder to hit”

4. PLEASE OBSERVE THE “RIDE RATINGS” ON THE CLUB BOARD AND SELECT THOSE RIDES YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE IN. If you wish to lead a ride, put the time and type of ride you want to lead on the board and then stick to that time. No passing on rides (except #6 rides). You can always change your place in line at a break or if you are waved on by the driver ahead of you.
