Catholic Charities: Feeding Our Neighbors
Thank you for your participation in this year’s Feeding
Our Neighbors Campaign to replenish food pantries and
soup kitchens. The final tally is not in yet. However, I
am delighted with the enthusiasm shown again this year.
Preliminary results indicate nearly 500,000 additional
meals raised. Once all tally forms are submitted I am
confident we will get to our goal of 1 million meals.
Thanks again for making this Campaign a success.

Saint Ann’s Parish 4th Sunday of Lent March 15, 2015
From time to time it is helpful to brush up on some of our Catholic beliefs. Today I’d like to talk about receiving Holy
Communion.
By receiving Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of Christ, we become physically one with God. As St. Athanasius
so aptly put it: “God became man so that we could become as God.” We are actually physically uniting with Jesus on His cross.
It is as if we are truly there with Him hanging on His cross, dying, and rising again. His suffering, death and resurrection
become ours! Not only do we become one with Christ, but also we become one with each other. We become the very Body of
Christ continuing the work begun by our Head two thousand years ago. Thus, when we receive the Eucharist, we are showing
that we are united in what we believe and how we practice those beliefs. Some people wonder why we don’t share Communion
with non-Catholics. Being able to share Communion with them is the goal we are working for, not a means to some greater end.
Until we are united with them and no longer consider ourselves separate denominations, we should not offer them Holy
Communion, especially if they don’t believe in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist! We must be united in what we
believe in order for receiving Holy Communion not to be a contradiction. To receive Communion with those with whom we are
not sufficiently united would be to proclaim a union that in fact does not yet exist, and for which we must work and pray.
At the same time, Catholics, in order to receive Communion worthily, must be in regular practice of the beliefs we
share in common; in other words, we go to Mass every Sunday and Holyday of Obligation and are attempting to follow
everything Jesus teaches us through the Church. We don’t have to be perfect – no one is – but we must be free from grave or
mortal sins. While venial sins are forgiven in the Eucharist, more serious sins must be forgiven in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation (Confession) before we receive Holy Communion. That includes missing Mass on a Sunday or Holyday of
Obligation without a reason that the Church teaches relieves us of our obligation: the physical inability to come to Mass due to
advanced age, true sickness, extreme weather, or bona fide emergencies. “Being too busy,” “being too tired,” “not feeling up to
it” or “forgetting” are not sufficient and must be brought to confession first, even if it only happened just once. If we are
married, our marriage must be recognized as valid by the Church. We must also not be living in any situations that contradict the
call to holiness, such as living together with someone not our valid spouse in any sexual capacity.
Next week we will discuss the proper way to approach to receive Holy Communion.

First Scrutinies for RCIA
Last Sunday we celebrated the First Scrutinies for the
RCIA process. There were three “catechumens’ present,
who will be baptized at the Easter Vigil. Also present
were those who will complete their Christian initiation by
receiving their first Eucharist and/or Confirmation, to
complete their entry into the Church. Today we celebrate
the Second Scrutinies and next weekend the final
scrutinies. Scrutinies are rites for self-searching and are
meant to deliver the catechumens from the power of sin
and recognition of Christ as the savior. The gospels for
these Sundays are pertinent. Last Sunday’s theme was
Christ as the living water, today’s theme is Christ as the
light of the world. The petitions at Mass are also
pertinent for those in the RCIA process. Please continue
to pray for our catechumens and candidates as they
continue to grow in their lives as Christians.
