The Global Health Research Initiative - GHRI
AGENDA• The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI)• GHRI programs• Overview of the Canadian HIV Vaccine
Initiative (CHVI)• GHRI and CHVI – where is the link?• Q&A
GHRI was founded in 2001. It is a partnership of three Canadian government agencies:
• Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)• Canadian International Development Agency
(CIDA)• International Development Research Centre
(IDRC) IDRC is the “host” agency
GHRI GHRI Programs Overview of CHVI GHRI-CHVI? Q&A
GHRI grants support 3 complementary areas of action:• research (a range of multi-disciplinary
approaches, including action-research, participatory research, RCTs, etc.)
• strengthening research capacity (learning-by-doing)
• knowledge translation (teams with decision-makers)

The Canadian HIV Vaccine Initiative (CHVI)
• Government of Canada (CIDA, CIHR, HC, IC, PHAC) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation partnership
• Initiated in 2007 to help accelerate efforts to develop a safe, effective, affordable and globally accessible HIV vaccine
GHRI GHRI Programs Overview of CHVI GHRI-CHVI? Q&A
• CHVI objectives are:
• To advance the basic science of HIV vaccine in Canada, and low-and-middle-income countries
• To support the translation of basic sciences discoveries into clinical trials
• To address the enabling conditions (regulatory, community)
• To advance the development of related technologies• To improve the efficacy and effectiveness of HIV
Prevention of Mother-to-Child (PMTCT) services in low-and-middle-income countries

CIHR Programmatic Grants to tackle health and health equity• Yassi, Engelbrecht (Workplace South-Africa)
“This GHRI-funded project was likely an important factor in leveraging a 5-year research programmatic grant from CIHR (Health Equity program) for our collaborative team, and the
partnerships forged during this GHRI initiative will be crucial in the operationalizing of this research program”.
