MICHALE GRAVES TALKS UPCOMING MAXWELL’S GIG, AND LIFE AFTER THE MISFITSBy Darren Paltrowitz As the lead singer of the 1990s reincarnation of the legendary punk band THE MISFITS, Michale Graves did his fair share of world tours and major label recordings. After moving on from THE MISFITS in 2000, the New Jersey native formed the band GRAVES with his former MISFITS Bandmate Dr. Chud. Graves. He then enlisted the U.S. Marines, and then was honorably-discharged due to a back injury. The singer has since kept active with a variety of musical projects including the band GOTHAM RD., a recording project with pro-wrestling icon VAMPIRO, Marky Ramone’s touring group BLITZKRIEG, and his own solo career. In support of Graves’ upcoming appearance at Hoboken’s Maxwell’s

Tavern on Sunday, April 24th, the prolific artist – who has released 10 al-bums in a four-year period – spoke to RIVER VIEW OBSERVER about his past, present and future. His lat-est studio effort is 2016’s When Worlds Collide, re-leased through Graves’ own Hydraulic Entertainment.

RVO: What do you wish more people knew about Michale Graves?MG: How much I enjoy and need contact with fans. Touring is my favorite time – period. It allows me to really see inside the minds and hearts of those who mean the most to me. Also, I really appreciate the inter-est in the classic MISFITS-era songs, but I really hope they have the chance to experience the new music we are doing.

Michale Graves

RVO: For someone think-ing of coming to see you at Maxwell’s, what should they expect? MG: A mix of classic music and a bunch of new stuff including songs from the new album When Worlds Collide.

RVO: Is this your first time performing in Hoboken? Did you perform at Max-well’s in its older incarna-tion? MG: Actually, it has been a long time, but we can’t wait.

Backstage with David Santana, Hair & Makeup Designer for Stage & Screen Weehawken Resident talks about his Career and First Big Break on Broadway

A-List Hair & Make-Up Designer David SantanaBy Sally Deering A member of the Interna-tional Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, David Santana of Weehawken can make anyone camera-ready no matter how difficult the challenge. That’s his profession: Hair & Make-up Designer for Broadway, film and TV. Santana currently does hair & make-up for the hit TV shows, GOTHAM and BLACKLIST. His work is featured in the films RUN ALL NIGHT, A VERY MURRAY CHRISTMAS, TIME OUT OF MIND., and URGE, and TVs A GIFTED MAN starring Patrick Wilson. He also appears in the documentary RENT: THE FINAL DAYS ON BROADWAY. It was

his work designing hair and make-up for RENT that took Santana from non-union gigs like music videos and indie films to A-List projects with stars like Leonardo DiCaprio, Su-san Sarandon, and Patrick Wilson. It all began back in the early 1990s when Santana was asked to work without pay for a then unknown musical that was going Off Broadway. The show was RENT, a rock musical about life in the early 90s on the Lower East Side that reflected the culture of the times, and shared insights into the impact of the AIDS epidemic. “I read the script, fell completely in love and said yes” Santana remembers.

“They told me they were going to start at the New York Theater Workshop and see if it takes off.

I remember signing a con-tract that said I would get paid if it goes to Broadway. Then it won the Pulitzer Prize.” Altogether, Santana spent 13 years with RENT both on Broadway and super-

vising the hair and makeup design for tours. “It toured all over the world,” Santana says. “I was hired to keep the design and create that look of the times: the braids

MICHALE GRAVES Cont’d from page 2

RVO: You’re originally from Bergen County. Having been all over the world as a musician, what is it that keeps you based in New Jersey all these years? MG: Well, I have all of my family in New Jersey and that keeps me back “home.”

RVO: You helped fund your Wanderer album through Kickstarter. Did you enjoy the crowdfund-ing process? MG: We absolutely love engaging with fans in every way, especially these projects. We include very unique experiential pledge levels that create one-on-one experiences for our fans.

RVO: Beyond your work with Kickstarter, you’ve always maintained a very DIY approach to record-ing and fan interactions. Who was it that especially inspired you to do that? MG: My business partner

and collaborator, the CEO of Hydraulic Entertainment Mark Allen Stuart is the real driver of this. We work together to ensure that each project directly involves our fans.

RVO: Is there a profes-sional accomplishment you’re most proud of? MG: I think 10 albums in four years would be it, and I am proud of each and every one of them.

RVO: Do you have any

upcoming projects in the works you can talk about? Are you still collaborating with VAMPIRO?MG: We are thinking about doing an acoustic version of When Words Collide. The working title is Bed-lam. RVO: When you’re not busy with your career, how do you like to spend your free time?MG: My number one pas-sion is spending time with my daughters. RVO: Any last words for the kids? MG: Thanks for your continued support, and if you can, take a listen to the new album When Worlds Collide. For more info, www.hydraulic-entertainment.com.

It’s very creative and very fun.” Santana doesn’t like

to play favorites, but he admits one of his favor-ite actors to work with is Patrick Wilson, the star of A GIFTED MAN. “He’s awesome,” Santana says. “He’s a respectful gentleman, a family man. There was a mutual respect between us; he allowed me to do my job well.” Santana spends long days on set – 14-16 hours -- making actors look their parts. He has to be on set two hours before the crew, which means sometimes being on set at 3 or 4 am. Hair and make-up styles for theater, fi lm and TV are very different from each other, Santana says. “With the theater you exaggerate everything,

BAYONNE MOBILE DENTAL DENTISTS TREAT CHILDREN IN SCHOOLSBy Sonia Owchariw Most children fear the dentist. Whether it’s the sound of the drill or the feel of the pic when the hygien-ist cleans their teeth, the experience of seeing a den-tist can cause great anxiety and frighten children to tears. Three dentists from Bayonne Family Dental address this issue by bring-ing the dentist offi ce to the classroom. Drs. Peter Fuentes, Salvatore Pavone, and Marissa Halum have teamed up to form On Site Dental: a Mobile Dental Team, where they visit lo-cal schools to give school children dental exams, cleanings, fl uoride treat-ments, and preventative sealants to ensure better dental health.

All three dentists also work at Bayonne Family Dental. The team performs on-site dental exams because many schoolchildren seem to be missing school be-cause of toothaches and many have never been to a dentist. “One of our big move-ments is preventative dental care before problems arise,” Dr. Fuentes says. Dental hygiene and reg-ular check-ups are impor-tant to overall dental health and to prevent gum disease and tooth decay, Dr. Fuent-es, who has been practicing dentistry in Bayonne since 2009, says. “We become their nutritional and health care provider,” Dr. Fuentes says. “Teachers love it and kids spend less time missing

school.’’ The On Site Dental Team’s main goal is to raise awareness of the impor-tance of oral health and preventative dental care starting when children are very young. “People are shocked to fi nd out that American Dental Association says a child’s fi rst check-up should be at one year of age,” Dr. Fuentes says.

government follows the National Women’s History Project’s Women’s History Month 2016 theme which “honors women who have shaped America’s history and its future through their public service and govern-ment leadership. Although often overlooked and un-dervalued, collectively they have dramatically infl u-enced our public policy and the building of viable insti-tutions and organizations. From championing basic human rights to ensuring access and equal opportu-nity for all Americans, they have led the way in estab-lishing a stronger and more democratic country.”WOMEN HONOREES North Bergen’s

Janet Castro is the Director and State Licensed Health Offi cer for the Township’s Public Health Services department; and the fi rst woman ever appointed to that position in North Ber-gen’s history. As Director, Castro oversees the op-eration of North Bergen’s Public Health Services like environmental health, com-municable disease, animal control, vital statistics and emergency response. As the fi rst woman director for the Public Health Services department, Castro walks a path no woman has taken before. The public health industry was a male-dominated industry up to a decade ago, she says. Castro put in the time and perseverance necessary to work her way up the ladder; where started as a Health Inspector.

“I worked hard and I had a vision, which was to be in the position I hold today,” Castro says. “We are a great team of leaders, and I have supervisors who help me run the ship. In essence, I’m a leader but not with-out the help of my team. I couldn’t do it alone.”Castro runs the offi ce with professionalism and a gender-neutral leadership, she says. Anyone can be an effective leader, male or female. “Lead with knowledge, wisdom and experience,” Castro says. “That said, I think an added bonus to being a woman in a lead-ership position is that we bring a little compassion to the table. That sets us apart as women leaders.” Being a woman in a lead-ership position also means going above and beyond

to show others you’re the right person for the job. “In essence, it keeps me on my toes and it’s hum-bling,” Castro says, “I know I have to continue to learn and expand my knowledge.” Castro joins an impres-sive list of Women of Achievement who will be honored at the March. 23rd ceremony in Jersey City. Michael Scoggins: I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU MAKE ME COMPLETELY CRAZY. “Galerie Ernst Hilger pres-ents a husband and wife artist couple examining how their respective creative outputs exist both together and sepa-rately. I LOVE YOU, BUT YOU MAKE ME COM-PLETELY CRAZY explores the depths and idiosyncrasies of human connection and isolation. This exhibition ex-poses two sides of a marriage to examine how the personal, domestic life, with all its wavering heights of bliss and depths of despair, intersects with the studio life in its own unpredictable roller coaster. Gingrow and Scoggins have been partnered since 2005 and in that time have always maintained very separate practices. This exhibition brings together two bodies of work that, though created in the private space of each part-ner’s respective heart, head, and studio, demonstrate the paths we all walk seemingly alone, but never without the influence of the lives around us, for better or for worse.”

Brightside Tavern for Hip Entertainment and Cool Comfort FoodA welcoming, Jersey City Neighborhood Eatery

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHTSIDE

Brightside Tavern EntranceTommy “Two Scoops” Parisi The Brightside bar

By Sally Deering

Everybody in Jer-sey City seems to know Tommy “Two Scoops” Parisi – the owner of a cozy ice cream parlor in downtown Jersey City and the Brightside Tavern on Bright Street, a block from the Jersey City Museum. For the past 4-1/2 years, Parisi has nurtured this neighborhood eatery with his own personal touch. Open and spacious, the Brightside Tavern features a large modern bar with several fl at screen TVs on the walls and plenty of elbow room; and, in the dining room, linen-clan tables face a stage set up with a piano and several microphones. Entertainment is a big part of the Brightside ex-perience and Parisi is both businessman and supporter of the local art scene. In the evenings, the dining room sizzles with live entertain-ment like Monday night Jazz Jams, Thursday night Open Mics, and Karaoke and Dance on Friday and Saturday nights. There are comedy nights, too. “We’ve had fi lm fes-tivals, gospel brunches, drag queen brunches, trivia nights, paint & sip nights,” Parisi says. “We had a fi lm festival here where they screened moves in the

upstairs dining room and gave out awards.”

Texan Burger Parisi likes to think of the Brightside Tavern as the “Cheers” of Jersey City; it even says so on the menu which features a smorgasbord of Appetizers, Pizzas, Sandwiches, Burg-ers, Soups, Salads, Pastas, Entrees and Desserts. A sampling of appetizers includes Brightside Chili, Fried Pickles, Spinach & Artichoke Dip, Loaded Tater Tots, Bacon Mac & Cheese, Mozzarella Wedg-es, Crab Cakes, Shrimp Crostini, Crispy Calamari, Steamed Mussels (red or white), and Crab, Beef, and Turkey Sliders ($7-$14). Pizzas feature the Mar-gherita, Buffalo Chicken, Shrimp & Garlic, and “Build your Own” ($9-$13). “Our personal pizzas are phenomenal,” Parisi says. Burgers include the Tur-key, Veggie, Texan (BBQ sauce, bacon and crispy onion), Quesadilla, and the Too Hot Burger with spicy chipotle mayo, caramelizedonion, pickled jalapenos and pepper jack cheese ($11-$14). For Sandwiches,

choices include Grilled Salmon Wrap, Skirt Steak, Eggplant Panini, and Fish Tacos ($10-$14). In the mood for pasta? The Cheese Ravioli, Bacon Mac & Cheese, Penne a la Vodka, and Cajun Trio Pas-ta are featured ($13-$19). Entrees include Pan Roast-ed Chicken Breast, Chicken Marsala, Chicken Francese, Fish & Chips, Skirt Steak, Pecorino & Pecan Crusted Tilapia, BBQ Baby Back Ribs and Atlantic Grilled Salmon ($15-$20). “Our Grilled Salmon dish is out of this world,” Parisi says. “Our Cajun Trio Pasta ranks right up there with any top restaurant; and my Fish Tacos are fabulous.” Dessert-wise, Brightside offers a Flourless Choco-late Cake, Apple Pie a la Mode, Bread Pudding and (of course) Homemade Gelato ($8). Sunday Brunch is served 11 am-5 pm and comes with free Mimosas and Bloody Marys for $20. A big place, the bar seats60; the dining room has tables for 45-60; and there’s a private upstairs lounge for private parties that has games like darts, shuffl e-board, foosball, and ping pong.

Running a restaurant and bar as well as an ice cream shop is no game, but Tommy says he enjoys interacting with his guests and giving them a good time to remember. Several customers posted reviews of their experi-ences at Brightside Tavern on Yelp. Here’s a sampling, the fi rst from Vee H. of Buffalo, New York: “We’ve been back to Brightside several weekends for brunch and only like this place more on each subse-quent visit. Friendly staff, bright and open bar area, great food. I order the clas-sic breakfast - eggs, bacon, hash browns and a side of French toast for $11…My dining companion has tried several of the other offer-ings - burgers, omelets, bis-cuits and gravy - and has

Apple Pie ala Mode

been stuffed and satisfi ed with each.” Bevin R. of Manhattan posted this: “We LOVE the Brightside Tavern! My husband and I had a very small wedding in May 2015 at City Hall, and wanted to have a party months down the road to host our friends and celebrate (about 100 people total). When my husband called to ask if they do events, he was immediately put in touch with the owner, Tommy, who was very nice and extremely helpful. We met with him months before the event to go over logistics. The prices are very reason-able and the Brightside can provide you with anything and everything you might need to host an event/party (good stereo system, ping pong and foosball tables and shuffl eboard, big screen televisions, screens for slideshows, piano, pri-vate bar, private restroom, and even private smoking deck, etc.).” Michael R. of Staten Island wrote this on Yelp.com: “Tommy the owner is fantastic! He let our 6 lunatic children sing kara-oke and play the piano...

On a computer hooked up to one of the fl at screen TVs, Parisi types a per-sonalized message to one of his guests at the bar. On the fl at screen, it runs like ticker-tape underneath a music video of Frank Sina-tra singing

“That’s Life!” The guest smiles and thanks Tommy for the shout-out on her way out.“I enjoy giving people a great night out; and people seem to love what we do here,” Tommy says. “Sometimes I get bored, but then a crowd of people walks in and I’m on a high.”

STARGAZINE Mar.2016 Aries- March 21 - April 19In the spirit of forgiveness the ninth house activity suggests a new phase shall begin in your life. You are a righteous person-ality and do unto others as you wish to receive. However, judg-ing others by your values has left you disenchanted. The as-tral advice suggests you realize that not everyone shares your sense of fairness. Go forth in harmony!! All is well!

Taurus- April 20 - May 20After a certain point in our lives we can decide to sit back and relax. That is not the time and place for retirement. No matter what age you are chron-ologically as Spring arrives you begin a new positive phase in your life, financially, person-ally, and above all spiritually! Over an imaginary mountain is a field where dreams may be realized.

Gemini- May 21 - June 20The energy in your solar chart indicates a flurry of activity in the financial aspects of your life. The buying and selling of valuables may bring you a windfall. The next thing to put on your wish list is a vacation on a tropical island. These gifts and many more await you in the near future.

Cancer -June 21 - July 22You have been trying to keep one relationship alive just until another relationship is off the ground. You have one foot on a floating ski and one on the oth-er. They are separating quickly and in a treacherous sea. This is a sure formula for disaster. Don’t string one love along. Not cool!! Release and wait for your true love to appear. Trust in the Universe!

Leo -July 23 - August 22A friend from the past returns and shakes up your life. You never thought that you would connect again and it is bitter sweet because sad memories come to mind. This friendship should be a sometime connec-tion and will never be the same as it once was. Chalk it up to another day, another time. Al-ways forgive and always love!!

Virgo -August 23 - Sept. 22 Love is in the air and it isn’t spring yet. You are focused on health and beauty and others are noticing a positive change. Those unattached Virgo’s will find a perfect mate in the next three months. Those Virgo’s with someone will inten-sify their love and happiness. Enjoy!!Libra-Sept. 23 - October 22 A new and powerful phase of life has begun and you must grasp the opportunities with both hands. Walk thru the door of happiness and love. You deserve the best and this is the time to accept the reality that all aspects of your life have improved. Enjoy!Scorpio - October 23 - Nov. 21 You have been giving mixed signal to your friends and fam-ily. It seems that you are always too busy to save time for important life events. This will come painfully evident when they become unavailable for you socially. This warning is to make you aware that you are loved and needed and may have been overlooking those most near and dear to you. Accept all invitations and show up with a smile and a gift. They love you still!

Sagittarius -Nov. 22 - Dec. 21 Just a note from the Universe! Things are not as bad as they seem. The astral advice sug-gests you stop watching the news and listening to the negative pundits. The world has always been in some type of turmoil. We just hear about it quickly and repeatedly. You are healthy and happy so a little bit of gratitude is in order! Go forth with confidence.Capricorn -Dec. 22 - Jan. 19 This is the year of the Fire Monkey in Chinese astrol-ogy. So buckle your emotional seatbelt. Even if you don’t like drama some will find you. Be ready and beware! Although things won’t be smooth sailing for the next few months you will come out better than ever by May.Aquarius -Jan. 20 - Feb. 18It is time to settle all debts with family members. Lay down your sword. You can no longer afford to be in constant battle mode Relax and release. Ask yourself what is the best way to bring peace in your family. It may be you need to say good-bye. Any decision is better than the current situation. Peace!Pisces -Feb. 19 - March 20 You may have escaped a per-sonal disaster of you own doing. The Universe, AKA God did a small intervention. Times a wast-ing. Your wake up call has gone unanswered many times. The communications system to your mental Neptunian planet is down. You are on your own not unlike the movie ,”The Martian.” This is not Hollywood. This is life and you are in it and responsible for your future. Your character is your destiny! Don’t forget your worth and that you are loved!
