A message from Paul Rougeot, Board Chairman

The mission of the United Way of Northwest Connecticut is to help people in our communities care for one another, and in 2015, Community Impact continued to play an important role in achieving that goal.

During the 2014/2015 winter season, the Warm the Children program, in partnership with the Register Citizen, raised enough money, which provided 108 kids with $100 of warm clothing. The Food For Your Neighbors program collected 16,836 for FISH, Friendly Hands Food Bank, Fishes & Loaves, Hands of Grace Food Pantry, Open Door Soup Kitchen, and the Salvation Army. This is the only major food drive until the U.S. Postal Service one in May. The Women’s Leadership Initiative, co-chaired by Kara Pagannini-Muth and Cailin Cerruto, held its third annual Women’s Gala on Friday, May 8th at the Torrington Country Club. Honorees were Barbara Spiegel, Woman of the Year, and Brooker Memorial, Best Supporting Group in the Role of Empowering Women. The Initiative’s mission is to mobilize the power of women to advance the Common Good in our communities. A special Girls Summit, chaired by Cailin Cerruto and Kara Pagannini-Muth, was held on October 23rd at UConn’s Torrington campus. More than 170 eighth grade girls from area schools attended. The purpose of the event was to educate, and empower young women as they transition to high school. Over 50 Day of Caring volunteers completed projects for Catholic Charities, Susan B. Anthony Project, the Torrington YMCA, Boy Scout Camp Workcoeman, and the Canaan Child Care Center. Committee members were Colleen Suppa (Chairperson), CT Mutual Holding Society; Pat Marciano, United Way Office Manager; Janice Wojtczak, Litchfield Bancorp; Tiffany Hussey, Litchfield Bancorp; Sandi Conforti, Northwest Community Bank; Jessica Dziob, Torrington Savings Bank; Lauren Smith, NWCT Chamber of Commerce; and Heather Waddell, BD. The 34th annual Golf Tournament on May 18 raised $11,129. An evening of Glowball Golf on September 11th raised an additional $6,013. The third annual Back to School Clothes for Kids program enabled 36 disadvantaged children in North Canaan and Falls Village to receive backpacks and clothing and “dress for success”. Annual Campaign was a great accomplishment. We exceeded our $789,600 goal. This was made possible largely because of the leadership of the campaign chair Jeffrey Geddes, Senior Vice President, Torrington Savings Bank. His leadership and dedication motivated each and every volunteer to meet individual and group goals. I’d like to thank Owen Quinn, Executive Director, the United Way staff, and our Board of Directors. As I exit my final year as president, I look back at the accomplishments that have been completed and wishing the new president the best of luck moving forward to the new ideas of finding ways that the United Way can better serve the people who live and work in Northwest Connecticut.

A message from Owen J. Quinn, Executive Director

Wow, that was one fast year! It’s hard to believe that in January 2015 I became the Executive Director of the United Way of Northwest CT. This past year has been an active and rewarding one. In March, we moved out of our long term home on Bird Street to our new location on Kennedy Drive with the Northwest Chamber of Commerce. This move has increased our visibility within the business community and increases the awareness of our mission: “Helping People in Northwest Connecticut Care for One Another.” I have been very busy during this first year meeting with area business leaders, local elected officials, community leaders and the key stakeholders in Northwest CT. It has been a great experience visiting and getting to know all of our United Way agencies. Our goal is to make our network of social service providers more responsive to the specific needs of our community. We are joining forces in a unified and collaborative way to develop impact strategies that align with our core mission. This core mission is predicated upon the belief that advancing the common good will create many opportunities for all of our friends and neighbors in Northwest CT to live healthy, successful and productive lives. We strive to accomplish this by concentrating our efforts in three areas: Education- helping children and youth achieve their full potential; Income- promoting financial stability and independence; and Health-improving people’s lives. At the United Way, we are working diligently to attain this goal by promoting community and volunteer engagement; participating in inclusive collaborative ventures; investing in our communities; enhancing donor relationships; promoting public policy and advocacy, generating multiple resources; and developing partnerships that align with the common good. I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the many supportive and hard working individuals who have assisted me in our mission during this past year. A special thank you goes to Paul Rougeot and the Board of Directors of the United Way of Northwest CT. Further, I want to extend my thanks to the dedicated staff at the United Way; the volunteers and businesses who selflessly give of their time and resources; our trendsetters and Leaders Circle; the Woman’s Leadership Initiative Committee; our Citizen Review panels; and to the chairs and volunteers of our special events. Thank you to Mr. James Mazzarelli for hosting our Emerging and Leaders Circle event at Action Wildlife. Last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank Jeff Geddes, who enthusiastically stepped up to lead this year’s phenomenal and successful campaign and Sandy Roberts, who so generously gave of her time and knowledge to ensure that our efforts and those of the United Way were successful and would positively impact the lives of our friends and neighbors in Northwest CT. It has been my pleasure to have completed two years as the Chairwoman of the United Way of Northwest CT Citizen Re-view Panels. It has been an awe inspiring experience realizing just how much our agencies do in the area of Basic needs/Financial stability, Health and Education- in just the last year we served over 58,500 residents living in Northwest CT. Our partner agencies work hard every day, improving the lives of our neighbors and ensuring that the funds collected by our United Way are put to the very best use serving those most in need. Our Citizen Review Panel teams do an outstanding job vetting and screening all programs and they meet one on one with each agency so that they are absolutely clear regarding their mission, who they will serve and what the outcomes will be for each person receiving United Way services. I want to personally commend our Panel Chairs for the 2016 Citizens Review: Mark Loomis-Health; Barbara Randall-Financial Stability Basic Needs; and Dwain Snow-Education. Also I would like to acknowledge the participation of Jeff Geddes Senior VP Torrington Savings Bank and 2015 United Way Campaign Chairman in the Citizens Review process his input and knowledge of United Way agencies and our mission were invaluable to our committees’. 2015 Campaign Chairperson Jeff Geddes

Dear Friends:

The 2015 campaign was a wonderful success for all of the United Way agencies and most importantly their clients. The Northwest United Way family once again rose to the challenge and offered generous support to our neighbors in need. Our United Way agencies provide life changing programs and services to our most vulnerable citizens. During the campaign I was fortunate to see the impact United Way funds have by meeting with all 26 agencies and some of their clients. Our agencies provide much more than basic needs like food and shelter, clini-cal treatments or support services; our Northwest United Way offers hope and, in too many cases an opportunity to heal from tragic domestic or sexual violence, addiction or trauma from a life changing event. Your generosity and compassion have made our work and the work of all 26 United Way agencies possible.

To be honest I was very nervous about being the campaign chairman because I knew how important the cam-paign’s success was to so many in our community. I’m forever grateful to the division captains and all the volun-teers and United Way staff. Everyone worked tirelessly to reach as many businesses and residents in the commu-nity as possible. The business community and their employees accepted the challenge and ran successful cam-paigns. We appreciate those businesses but we have more companies that need encouragement to become part of the United Way family. I’m asking all business owners that value and support a strong United Way in their com-munity to encourage other business owners to come on board and join us in making northwest Connecticut a so-cially stable and supportive community to do business. The needs are tremendous and if we are going to be suc-cessful we must continue to grow our base of businesses and residents that support our mission.

How will you vote this year? I encourage you to vote for the Northwest United Way. Encourage your employer to run a campaign, call the United Way office and volunteer on one of our campaign cabinets, tell your friends and business associates why you support the United Way, discuss why you support the United Way with your kids and help us develop the next generation of givers. More than ever your vote counts!
