Continuing Education Categories:While the focus to have quality clinical education at our annual conference has remained the same over the years, KEMSA has also worked hard to provide you with educational sessions that help you meet some of the required components in the Kansas Continuing Education Plan. Each session has a corresponding CE category (and sub-topics as appropriate) listed on the schedule and descriptions, so you can determine which sessions you want to attend to help fulfill some of your hours. However this event is not meant to be a refresher course and get you everything needed.

Once again, the 2019 Conference will have evening educational hours and early morning sessions for those who want them or need more hours. If you attend all the sessions from August 8-11, 2019, you have a chance to earn a total of 28 hours in just 3.5 days! This includes the sessions and opportunities including:

• 8-hour pre-conference workshops on Thursday or two 4-hour options this year

• a 2-hour earlybird session on Thursday evening included in a full conference registration for those who want to arrive earlier on Thursday

• a 2-hour educational session on Friday evening• two early morning sessions on Saturday & SundayIf you need hours, this is the place to get them at an affordable rate! And, you can still enjoy the evening entertainment once the evening sessions are over!

You’ll be able to plan your day with a personalized schedule, browse exhibitors, view maps, and get general show information. Also speakers, photos, biographies, handouts, and more are located in the mobile guide!

Due to recent changes in the CE regulations, we have had to adjust our pre-con session times to still get 8 hours and account for breaks. It is the attendee’s responsibility to follow the CEU rules outlined in the conference materials in order to have valid proof of attendance. Attendees must be present for the entire session. CE categories and subtopics for each session are listed on the schedule and descriptions.Thursday, Aug. 8 - Pre-Conference = 8 CE hoursThursday, Aug. 8 - Evening Earlybird session = 2 CE hoursFriday, Aug. 9 = 7 CE hours Saturday, Aug. 10 = 7 CE hoursSunday, Aug. 11 = 4 CE hours = 28 TOTAL hours available if you attend all sessionsWe will not be providing nursing hours, but we will provide you with the materials to apply for hours on your own.

This is a 2-hour earlybird session on Thursday evening included in a full conference registration for those who want to arrive earlier on Thursday and get some additional continuing education hours.

Regular Conference Earlybird Session- Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, 1900-2100

1900-2100 - Earlybird Evening Education: Hazards Associated with Electricity: A Look at Response to Overhead and Underground Powerline Incidents - Tim Boswell and Westar Energy~Ops - Hazmat 2.0Westar Energy will provide a powerful and dynamic presentation that will reveal the true hazards of working around overhead and underground power lines. Electrical contacts are far more frequent than one ever hears about! This presentation will provide the opportunity to see and discuss the effects of electricity on the human body including how electricity can hurt you through touch potentials, voltage gradients, and step potentials. The speakers will provide you with practical guidelines on scene assessment, coaching the patient(s), and keeping your response team safe. You’ll learn why to be observant around high voltage powerlines, but more importantly, you’ll learn that low voltage does not mean low hazard!

With the aid of a “Hot Demonstration Trailer” energized at 7200 volts, Westar Energy will review and demonstrate real life situations to help you incorporate observance for possible electrical hazards during everyday life activities at work and at home.

Regular Conference - Friday, Aug. 9, 2019

0830-0930 - KEYNOTE: Lifesavers Anonymous - Dan Limmer~MED - Behavior 0.75, OPS - Communications 0.25Television shows depict the fire and emergency medical services as constant drama and excitement in stark contrast to real life. What happens when the EMS provider realizes the number of patients we actually save are minimal and the non-serious patients are plentiful? This session presents a strategy for long-term satisfaction as an EMS provider and focuses on patient-centered care and provider well-being. Stay in EMS for the long haul. We need you.

1000-1100 - General Session: The Ambulance as a Crew Served Vehicle: How Crew Resource Management Improves Patient Care - Dan Batsie~OPS - Communications, MCI/Triage 1.0We are all smarter together than we are alone; but far too often we look upon decisions and leadership in the prehospital world as a solitary event. A paramilitary organizational history has promoted a reluctance to

question authority and likely increased the likelihood of error. We now understand that the best practice to decrease failure is to rely more heavily on teamwork. This class will discuss the concept of crew resource management and describe how teamwork can improve patient safety and human performance. Specific strategies for improving teamwork within your organization will be provided. All levels are welcome.

Medicine changes frequently and this session is designed to look at a variety of these changes along with other issues from the street such as drugs, interpersonal relations on scene, social media, and some dynamic case studies. Join Dan as he discusses the issues you need most to be sharp on the street.

Breakout #2: High Perfusion CPR - Adiel Garcia~ARV - Vent/Oxy, BLS, ALS Airway 0.25, CV - Cardiac Arrest, 4/12 Lead, Pharm/Med 0.75During this session, Adiel reviews the most up-to-date science behind high perfusion CPR and the applications that have rendered the highest survival rates.

Breakout #3: The Uncommon Neonate - Michelle Westfall~ MED - OB/Neonate 1.0We’re all told that most of the time delivering a baby is routine. But what happens when it’s not? What happens when something looks different? Or is different? This presentation will discuss some of the uncommon neonates and how EMS can prepare for them.

1400-1500 Breakout Sessions

Breakout #1: Prehospital Care for Traumatic Mass Casualties - Dr. Kari Jerge~TRAUMA - CNS Injury, Hem Ctrl, Soft tissue/musculoskeletal, Shock Management 1.0This session will be an in-depth review of appropriate algorithm and treatment protocols for first responders in the setting of traumatic mass casualties. It will include discussion of new additions to PHTLS curriculum, THREAT and MARCH algorithms, TECC vs TCCC, and different models for multidisciplinary response incorporating law enforcement and EMS including Rescue Task Force.

Breakout #2: Acute Coronary Care for the Non-Medic - Dan Batsie~CV - ACS/Chest Pain, 4/12 Lead, Pharm/Med 1.0The successful treatment of the acute coronary syndrome is truly a team-based approach. This class is designed to introduce the non-paramedic to the lifesaving concepts of cardiac care. Topics will include A&P, 12-lead ECG placement, and a thorough review of the most important treatment modalities. Although all levels of care are welcome, this class is primarily designed for emergency responders, EMTs and AEMTs.

Breakout #3. I’m fine...No You’re Not. - Chrissy Bartel/Con Olson~Local - 1.0I’m fine. Does that phrase sound familiar? We’ve all uttered those two words after experiencing “that” call. Are we trying to convince others or ourselves? As we share our own journeys and struggles, we will discuss the mental health of first responders, PTSD and the effects of caring for others. We will also explore resources available for personnel and agencies. It’s time to start taking care of our own.

1530-1630 - General Session: When the Grim Reaper Wins: An EMS Providers Guide to Death with Dignity - Dan Limmer~MED - Behavior .25, Local - 0.75While our primary mission is to save lives, not every patient is saved. From fatal trauma to terminal illness, EMS has a front row seat to death and dying with minimal preparation for the non-clinical elements of patient and family care. This presentation will cover the interpersonal components of EMS at death scenes including death notifications, communication with family, friends and the dying patient; interfacing with the police and hospice and dealing with the emotions you may feel during and after the call. A compassionate interaction with those left behind by the death of a loved one may be one of the most meaningful things you will ever do in EMS.

Regular Conference - Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019

1900-2100 - Evening Education: A Busy Day in the Neighborhood Facilitated Scenarios Reviewing Hot Topics in EMS - Dan Batsie~ ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, Pharm/Med 0.25, CV - Cardiac Arrest, Pharm/Med 0.25, MED - Behavior, AMS, Respiratory, Pharm/Med 1.0, TRAUMA - Hem Ctrl, Soft Tissue 0.5Active learning isn’t just for licensure classes. Although most traditional EMS continuing education relies upon lecture and power point, the importance of “flipping the classroom” should not be lost in our refresher training. This class will introduce several contemporary and newsworthy EMS topics through the facilitated scenario model. Discussing realistic situations, participants will actively evaluate information, weigh consequences, and engage in decision making toward desired patient outcomes. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on their choices and discuss current best practices pertaining to the topic at hand. This class is best supported through class participation, so please come ready to play along.

0700-0800 - Early Morning Education: Adventures in Emerging Clinical Research - Charles Foat~CV - Pharm/Med 0.5, OPS - Comms 0.5This session will discuss some recent research that has an impact on EMS providers. While recent studies have questioned if we are administering too much epinephrine in cardiac arrest, some evidence suggests we may need more epinephrine in anaphylaxis. We will also explore what is the best IV fluid, and finally spend some time exploring how artificial intelligence can be trained to detect medical emergencies.

0815-0915 - General Session: Pediatric Respiratory Failure: Recognizing, Treating and Preventing Arrest in Children with Severe Respiratory Crisis - Dan Batsie~ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, BLS Airway 0.5, MED - Resp Emergencies 0.5Respiratory failure is a leading cause of cardiac arrest in children, but since it is a relatively rare event, very few EMS practitioners have experience in managing these patients. This class will review the most common causes of respiratory failure in children including bronchiolitis and asthma and describe key recognition features to identify the peri-arrest state. Both BLS and ALS treatments will be reviewed and best practice, evidence-based interventions will be described.

0945-1045 Breakout Sessions

Breakout #1: Family Centered Care - David Seastrom~Local - 1.0This lecture will take the attendee by the hand and lead them through the world of healthcare from the patient and family perspective. It will stimulate the provider to incorporate the family, the patient and the medical care into a single system. Special situations and topics, such as family presence and their psychosocial effects on patients and families will be discussed.

Breakout #2: Second Victim Syndrome - Andrew Campfield~Local - 1.0As healthcare providers we are daily accountable for the well-being of others. Despite rigorous training and safety standards medical errors occur at alarming rates. Second Victim Syndrome occurs when healthcare providers experience trauma, similar to that of PTSD, after adverse events. This presentation will look at the causes and implications of Second Victim Syndrome and outline techniques to identify and manage its impact.

Breakout #3: Officer Down! How to Deal When We Go Down in the Line of Duty - John Cota~TRAUMA - 0.5, MED - Behavior 0.5This presentation will talk about how to deal when a public safety officer goes down. From the initial injury and transportation concerns, this presentation will also talk about the emotional trauma that public safety workers encounter once that radio call goes out. What are the steps for public safety workers to get help if needed? This presentation will talk about the different phases of grief, and discuss CISM, CISD, and Peer Support.

1130-1230 Breakout Sessions

Breakout #1: Pediatric Medical Emergencies - David Seastrom~ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, BLS Airway, Pharm/Med 0.5, MED - AMS, Resp Emergencies 0.5This session will cover many pediatric medical emergencies including their signs and symptoms, management and possible complications. Topics in this lecture include heat emergencies, cold emergencies, gastroenteritis, appendicitis, hemophilia, abuse, burns, seizures, meningitis, DIC, septic shock, MODS, croup, epiglotitis, asthma, SIDS, cardiopulmonary arrest and snake bites. This is sure to enhance the knowledge of the basic provider and reinforcement of the more advanced.

Breakout #2: Treat the Monitor AND the Patient: Advanced Scenarios Using Diagnostic ECG Interpretation - Dan Batsie~CV - ACS/Chest Pain, 4-12 Lead, Pharm/Med 1.0ECG interpretation is an important step in advanced patient assessment and an essential element in forming a treatment plan for a wide range of critically ill patients. Although no care should ever be based solely on an ECG, being ready to make accurate interpretations and recognize lethal dysrhythmias is a skill that requires practice. This class is designed to hone that skill. Students will be presented with real world scenarios that require rapid ECG interpretation and will work through a process of problem-based learning to develop real time treatment strategies. Debriefing will focus on electrophysiology, pathophysiology and current

treatment best practices. Although all providers are welcome, this class is geared toward advanced providers with prior ECG interpretation training.

Breakout #3: Just the Basics: Pharmacology for the EMT - Janet Taylor~CV - Pharm/Med 0.5, MED - Pharm/Med 0.5Often used as a Continuing Education module, this class reviews the medications that an EMT is able to give without ALS assistance. We review the indications, contraindications, side effects, and little known trivia about SL Nitro, Charcoal, Epi-Pen, Oxygen, Oral Glucose Gel, and aspirin and Albuterol. Did you know the same activated charcoal used for overdoses is also great for removing odor from cat litter? And it works the same way in your gut!

1330-1430 - General Session: Capnography: Waveforms and numbers that improve patient care - Jon Friesen~ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, BLS, ALS Airway Management 1.0For many providers, End-tidal CO2 monitoring remains a mystery. This class takes a trip through what the waveforms and numbers mean, and how EMS providers can use them in diagnosing and treating patients for better outcomes. Using case studies, EMS providers get a chance to take newfound knowledge out for a spin as a way of solidifying the information.

1445-1545 - General Session: No One Dies from Extremity Trauma: Hemorrhage Control in the 21st Century - Dan Batsie~TRAUMA - Hem Ctrl, Soft tissue/musculoskeletal 1.0In 1975, 9% of all combat related deaths were associated with uncontrolled extremity bleeding. In 2008, that number was less than 2%. These lessons of the battlefield are especially important to civilian medicine as they demonstrate that our previously held ideas on how to stop bleeding in many cases were just plain wrong. This class will discuss modern day hemorrhage control and will describe the key lessons learned from the battlefield. We will detail best practices of direct pressure, hemostatic agents, and tourniquets.

1600-1700 - General Session: No O2 for You!: Using Too Much of a Good Thing - Janet Taylor~ARV - Ventilation/Oxygenation 1.030 years ago, it was thought that if a little oxygen is good for you, then a lot must be even better. And that was the case until studies proved that too much of a good thing

really isn’t the best for our patients. Oxygen titration is now recommended in many nationally recognized programs such as ACLS, NRP, PALS and more. But why can’t we give some extra oxygen to our patients? What bad could really happen if we continue to do what we have been doing for 30 years?

0700-0800 - Early Morning Education: Adventures in Emerging Trauma Research – Charles Foat~TRAUMA - Hem Ctrl, Shock Management 0.5, OPS - Vehicle Ops/Transport Considerations 0.5This session will discuss some recent research that has an impact on EMS providers. TXA has been hailed as a lifesaving medication for trauma patients; we will explore if TXA still saves lives. Recently some interesting correlations have been associated with the level of medical provider treating trauma patients and associated mortality. We will also explore the effect of IVs on scene-time, and finally explore if all clotting agents perform equally.

0815-0915 - General Session: Toxic Avenger: Sepsis in EMS - Janet Taylor~ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, ALS Airway 0.25, CV - Pharm/Med 0.25, MED - AMS, Pharm/Med 0.5Sepsis is the hot topic with one person dying every 3.5 seconds somewhere in the world. The International Sepsis Campaign has developed guidelines for improving patient outcomes including interventions that can be started in the field. In this presentation we will develop a better understanding of sepsis and how it is more than “just an infection.”

0945-1045 - General Session: State of the Science - Jacobsen/Gallagher~Local - 1.0The two full-time EMS medical directors in Kansas present a tag team presentation of the current issues in EMS. This stuff is so fresh, we didn’t even have the topics when we had to finalize the session information. Come see what’s hot right now!

1100-1200 - General Session: Caring for Special People: Unique Situations in EMS - Janet Taylor~ARV - Vent/Oxygenation, BLS, ALS Airway Management 1.0Fortunately for most patients with special needs, they and their caregivers are very knowledgeable on how to care for their special need(s). Unfortunately, it is when they have tried everything that they were taught, and it still doesn’t work that they call 9-1-1. It can be daunting to walk in and find a patient with equipment you aren’t familiar with or have a condition that you may or may not have learned about in paramedic or nursing school. We will go over the most common situations that instill fear in those who respond to a patient with a special need. We will go over and handle actual tracheostomy equipment, feeding tubes, Cerebral/Ventral Shunts, dialysis catheters, central lines and review the most common reasons for calling 9-1-1 in each of the special needs situation.
