1 Overview

The BlueBox is available in four versions, as BlueBox T4, BlueBox T4 Basic, BlueBox TS and BlueBox TC.

This manual describes the versions T4 and T4 Basic, different properties of the other versions are de-scribed in separate manuals.

The version of the BlueBox is documented on the delivery note. The serial number of BlueBox is on the type label on the right side of the housing.

1.1 Meaning of the Safety Instructions

Danger: Used if non-observance threatens serious injury or death.

Warning: Used if non-observance threatens slight injuries or serious property damage.

Caution: Used if non-observance threatens minor property damage.

Used for general safety instructions.

Symbol of safety instruction relating to the use of electricity.

1.2 Essential Properties of the BlueBox System The BlueBox is the central element of the BlueBox system. The BlueBox system is a modular measurement and control system. The BlueBox is connected to sensors and actuators using CAN (Controller Area Network) technology. The BlueBox is equipped with the usual interfaces for data processing and communication.

• Due to its modular design, the BlueBox system can handle almost all measurement and control functions.

• More than 200 sensors and actuators can be connected to a BlueBox. Connection is via sensor modules and actuator modules1.

• In addition to sensors and actuators from our own product range, we also integrate products from almost all other manufacturers.

• The sensor and actuator modules can be placed decentralized in bus or star architecture2 over distances of up to 1000 meters (optionally also longer).

• Measurement data transmission and communication via Ethernet, Internet, mobile radio (HSPA/LTE)3, telephone line (ISDN, analogue)3, EMC or Modbus (RS-232 / RS-485), current outputs (4 - 20 mA).

• In mobile use of the BlueBox, it is possible to connect a GPS receiver for continuous position determina-tion.

1.5 Notes on the Current Outputs The BlueBox has two galvanic isolated current outputs, see also 8.2.7 Current Output. Designation in the menus: Current output 1 bsa 503-A | Current output 2 bsa 503-B The connections are located at the bottom of the BlueBox, see 3.2.2 Connector Pin Assignment at the BlueBox T4 or 3.3.2 Connector Pin Assignment at the BlueBox T4 Basic. The measurement values of an assigned sensor control a current output. The assignment of a sensor to a current output is done with the program AMS (AMS is part of the BlueBox PC Software). Connection diagram of the current outputs:

Note: +24 VDC and ground of current output 1 and current output 2 are not galvanically isolated from each other, therefore they must not be connected. Otherwise falsified current values are generated!

1.6 Notes on the Pulse Inputs

• The Blue Box T4∗ has two galvanically isolated pulse inputs. The connectors are located at the bottom of the BlueBox. see 3.2.2 Connector Pin Assignment at the BlueBox T4

• The pulse inputs 1 and 2 are provided for the connection of PNP or NPN encoders. The delivery state is NPN, the selection is set with the associated jumpers. see Appendix H – Mainboard Connectors BlueBox T4 or bottom label in the BlueBox

• Both pulse inputs can be used as static inputs, the conversion is carried out with the program AMS (AMS is part of the BlueBox PC Software).

1.7 Notes on the Storage Space Management of the NANDrive™ The operating system and the firmware of the BlueBox require a disk space of about 45 MB.

The operating system of the BlueBox (called storage firmware) consists of Linux® and BlueBox-specific components, the current version when creating this manual is 3.27 The firmware is the BlueBox application software on the operating system, the version described here is 4.02.06 The version of the storage firmware and firmware are listed in the system information (8.2.6 Help menu 8.2.6.1 System Information).

The following data is stored on the NANDrive™:

• BlueBox configuration, i.e. password, BlueBox serial number, system protocol, number of virtual sensors, Internet access data, etc.

• Configuration of the virtual sensors, i.e. name, unit, interval etc. as well as all AMS formulas.

• Sensor values/actuator values, i.e. sensor measurement values/actuator status values, spectra, calibration protocols etc.

• The settings of external protocols, e. g. the Modbus mapping table

If the NANDrive™ memory space is full, sensor data are deleted daily to create space for new sensor data. Sen-sor data consist of the measurement values∗ and the log files of the sensors (sensor protocol, calibration pro-tocol and system protocol).

The oldest data is deleted first. A measurement value needs 8 –12 bytes (16 – 20 bytes with GPS data).

A spectrometer absorbance spectrum needs 1605.

• Example: BlueBox, NANDrive™ with 512 MB, 1 Sensor, 1 Spectrometer At a measurement interval of one minute approx. 0.5 MB for the sensor and about approx. 70 MB for the spectrometer are assigned to the NANDrive™ per month. So the deletion of old sensor data starts here after approx. 5½ months

It is recommended to choose the measurement interval as large as possible.

2 Notes on Operation

Improper handling of electrical devices endangers man and property. Let carry out the commissioning of the BlueBox only by skilful, trained personnel using appro-priate tools. Incorrect installation could cause serious faults and errors that may damage the device.

Keep this manual handy for future reference. Never deliver the BlueBox to other persons without this manual. The manufacturer is not liable for improper or unintended usage.

This device is designed in accordance with the Low Voltage Directive and the safety regulations for electronic measurement devices. The trouble-free operation and reliability can only be assured if you pay attention to the generally applicable safety measures and special safety instructions in this manual. • Before the connection of the Blue Box to the power supply make sure that the labelled BlueBox operating

voltage matches the supply voltage (indicating the areas of power supply).

• The correct functioning and operational safety of the device can only be ensured, if the ambient condi-tions that are specified in the section 1.2 "Technical data" are complianced.

• If the device is transported from a cold to a warm environment condensation may result in a failure of the function. In this case, wait until the device temperature is at the level of the ambient temperature before a new start-up.

• Maintenance and repair work may only be performed by a specialist who is authorized by GO Systemelek-tronik.

If it is to be assumed that the device can no longer be operated safely, it must be put out of operation and secured with identification markings against further commissioning. The safety may be compromised by the device if, for example, the device:

• has visible damages,

• no longer works as required,

• has been stored in improper conditions for a longer time,

• was exposed to improper transport conditions.

In cases of doubt give notice to GO Systemelektronik GmbH. If necessary send the device to GO Systemelek-tronik for reparation respectively maintenance.

3 Installation 3.1 Mounting of the BlueBox Before mounting the BlueBox check the scope of delivery for completeness: (Example: minimum delivery scope without power supply and without sensor-/actuator module)

Be careful when choosing the location of the BlueBox, the location has to achieve the following properties:

• rain-and sun-protected location • convenient location for a mobile network coverage, if the Blue Box is used with an optional modem∗

The Blue Box should be mounted on a vertical surface. The drilling template is used for mounting on a flat surface. Please choose suitable mounting screws and dowels, which are suitable for the material of the mounting surface. Remove the covers on both sides of the BlueBox. Below you see the holes for the mounting screws. Despite the construction of the BlueBox in protection class IP 65you have to install the measuring instrument in a rain-and sun-protected site. If this is not possible, the BlueBox must be mounted in an additional housing. A great advantage of the BlueBox is their design flexibility. Therefore construction of installation will vary by application. A description of the structure and assembly of the BlueBox can only serve as an example.

3.4 Connecting of the Power Supply For connecting the power to the BlueBox you need an external 24 VDC power supply.

The power supply is available in two versions:

1. Power supply for the BlueBox (Article-No. 486 K000) 75 W Input voltage: 88 – 264 VAC

2. Power supply for the BlueBox (Article-No. 486 K001) 150 W older power supply: ∗ Input voltage: 88 – 132 VAC switchable 176 – 264 VAC new power supply: Input voltage: 88 – 264 VAC

Frequency range of all versions: 0 Hz und 47 – 63 Hz

The BlueBox should only be installed by a qualified person using suitable tools. Incorrect instal-lation can result in serious malfunction and could damage the instrument.

Make sure that your power grid has suitable values. Please notice that the power supply unit is placed close to the BlueBox because the voltage is declining with the length of the connecting cable.

Please notice that it is necessary to use the appropriate conductor cable for the environment. In the outside area it is advisable to use a rubber cable that is approved for the usage site.

Insert the at 24 VDC power supply cable socket into the in the corresponding panel plug of the BlueBox.

3.5 LAN Connection The LAN port allows the connection of the Blue Box to a Local Area Network or directly to a PC. Thus, a retrieval of data and direct communication with the BlueBox is possible. This requires the installation of the BlueBox PC software on your local computer (see Manual BlueBox PC Software). The connection to a network is made by a RJ-45-connector at the bottom of the BlueBox (see also 3.2/3.3 Con-nections BlueBox T4). For this connection you have to choose one of two different connecting cables.

• For connecting to a network you need a standard RJ-45 cable.

• For connecting to a PC you need a RJ-45-crosslink cable. (Only if the PC has no automatic switch of the network interface.)

Please ensure that the RJ-45-plug snaps into the socket with a click. If the closing cannot be inserted on the socket, please put vaseline on the rubber seal and try it again care-fully. 3.6 Notes on the IP Protection Code

Precondition for the protection code IP65 is: • tightly twisted connectors or protection caps with protection code IP65 or

higher on all connections∗ • placed protection cap on the USB- and LAN-Connection

or USB- and LAN-plugs with protection code IP65 or higher

The plugs and protection caps delivered by GO Systemelektronik have protection code IP65.

USB- and LAN plugs with protection code IP65 can be ordered from GO Systemelektronik.

3.7 CAN-bus Termination at the BlueBox The CAN-bus is factory preset terminated. If you need to change the termination, open the housing∗ and set the respective termination switch to either On or Off.

3.8 Jumper Position RS-232/RS-485 and RS-485 Termination at the BlueBox The serial interface of the BlueBox is factory preset to RS-232, unless requested otherwise by the customer. If you need to change the jumper positions, open the housing∗ and place the jumpers correspondingly.

If the BlueBox is factory presetted to RS-485, then the interface is terminated by the factory.

4 Connection of Modules Sensor and actuator modules are connected to the BlueBox via CAN-bus cable. The CAN-bus (Control-ler Area Network) belongs to the field buses and is an asynchronous, serial bus system.∗ The connection to the BlueBox is an M12 panel socket (see 3.2 Connections BlueBox T4 or 3.3 Con-nections BlueBox T4 Basic). The first and last element must be terminated in a bus structure (see 4.3 Termination of the CAN-bus). In most cases, the CAN network is built up as a bus structure. For other structures, the network topol-ogy must be CAN-bus-compliant. To connect a module to the BlueBox, plug the M12 cable plug from the CAN-bus cable into the M12 panel socket of the BlueBox. The other end of the CAN-bus cable can be con-nected to a module in two ways: 1. Connection with M12 cable plug see 4.1 Note the correct PIN assignment of the cable plug. see 3.2 or 3.3 When using a cable of type LiYCY 2x2x0.5 mm² (Article- No. 339 0001) the colour coding according to the table below applies. 2. 4.1.1 CAN-Bus Cable to M12 Cable Plug 1. Remove cable sheath

Note on a possible operation error: There are cable plugs with their own colour mark-ing, this colour marking is invalid. Only the num-bering of the contacts is valid.

4.2 Connection with Spring Clips Note the correct terminal assignment in the module based on the circuit board labelling. The CAN-bus cable is routed through one of the cable glands into the module housing and con-nected to the CAN-bus clamp socket which is plugged into the slot of the CAN-bus connection [1. The clamp sockets are suitable for a wire cross section of 0.5 to 2.5 mm2 and must be stripped to a length of 9 to 10 mm. The cables are connected to the clamp sockets as follows: Use a suitable screwdriver to press into the spring groove [2] next to the contact hole into which the stripped wire is then inserted as far as it will go [3]. Remove the screwdriver from the spring.

The following illustration shows how a module is connected via the clamp socket connector as a pass module. In this case, the CAN-bus cable lead-ing to the next module must be connected to a row of the clamp socket. The correct terminal assignment must be ensured.

4.3 Termination of the CAN-Bus For a CAN-bus, it is important that the single elements of the CAN-bus chain are correctly termi-nated. Physically, this means that the two ele-ments at the end of the CAN-bus chain (final ele-ments) must have a terminating resistor of 120 Ω each. This prevents signal reflections and interference. Elements within a CAN-bus chain (pass elements) must not have a terminating resistor.

The terminating resistor is switched on and off with a DIP switch. At modules, this DIP switch is located next to the connection terminals of the sensors in the module housing and is labelled "Termination". The terminating resistor is switched on when the DIP switch is in position "ON". It is switched off in the "OFF" position. The BlueBox itself can also be used to switch on and off the terminating resistance. Since the BlueBox is located at the end of the CAN-bus chain in the majority of installations, the Blue-Box is terminated at the factory, i.e. the terminat-ing resistor is switched on. If the BlueBox is located within a CAN-bus chain, the termination of the BlueBox must be switched off. 4.4 Checking the Termination In order to ensure correct functioning of the CAN-bus, the correct termination of the final elements must be ensured. For this you need a multimeter to measure the resistance between CAN-High and CAN-Low. The measurement can be performed on any ele-ment within the CAN-bus system. The easiest way to take the measurement is at the openings below the clamp sockets (see next col-umn). Make sure that all elements of the CAN-bus chain are voltage free. The measurement procedure is described below:

Measure the resistance between CAN-High and CAN-Low as shown in the figures below. The measured resistance should be between 55 Ω and 70 Ω. The following deviations can be as-sumed to be caused by the following causes of error:

0 Ω Short-circuit in the line

< 55 Ω More than two elements terminated.

120 Ω Only one element is terminated. (e.g. only the BlueBox is terminated)

>120 Ω No element is terminated or broken cable.

5 Active CAN Repeater The active CAN repeater from GO Systemelektronik is a module for expanding the CAN bus structure.

The active CAN repeater has eight galvanically isolated bus lines. Each of these bus lines can connect up to five elements on a length of up to 1000 m. The connections of the 8 bus lines are called port 1 to port; the transmission rate of each bus line is 50 kbit/s. If required, the individual bus elements can be provided with an independent power supply.

Long cable lengths are not recommended for safety-relevant applications.

The connection is made via clamp sockets on the board slots. The termination of the single bus lines is carried out with DIP switches on the left side of the slots. The repeater itself is terminated or not, depending on its position in the CAN-bus.

It is recommended to terminate unused ports.

7 Switching On the BlueBox and Password Input After the Blue Box has been started by switching on the power supply, shortly thereafter the following notes appear in succession on the display1.

During this time the BlueBox checks the database and initiates the system.

Then the BlueBox initiates the connected sensors and actuators.

Pressing <Menu> switches directly to the Main menu (8.2), where you can make system settings while sensors and actuators are being initialized.2

Once the initialization is complete, the display shows the number of connected sensors, actuators and virtual sensors3. After 20 seconds or after pressing <OK> the Parameter display (8.1) appears.

The device tries to repair a faulty file system automatically. If this does not work, the service must be con-tacted so that it can reset the memory card.

8 The Menu Operation The BlueBox T4 has a colour display. The BlueBox T4 Basic has a colour display in the newer versions, versions with a monochrome display are no longer available. The operation on the monochrome display is almost identical to the operation on the colour display and dif-fers most in the measurement value display (see 8.1 Parameter Display and following). 8.1 Parameter Display

The following can be displayed: • the internal sensors and actuators1 • the virtual (calculated) sensors • the connected external CAN-bus sensors • the connected external CAN-bus actuators1

Selection of the displayed sensors/actuators: • Only selected sensors and actuators are displayed.

Selection via 8.2.2.1 Sensor menu and 8.2.4.1 Actuator menu • All sensors and actuators are displayed. • All sensors are displayed.

The selection of the displayed sensors/actuators is made via 8.2.1.6 Display.

When there is no user activity in all other menus (except input menus) for 2 minutes, the software switches back to the parameter display.

At current user-defined error messages, this button appears. This button opens the menu of the current user-defined error messages. The definition of the user-defined errors is done with the program AMS2.

The use of a DynDNS service depends on the respective DynDNS provider, therefore GO Systemelektronik cannot guarantee the functionality of a DynDNS service.

Pressing a point on the Active Brightness or Passive Brightness bar sets the display backlight value accordingly. At user inactivity, the software switches the backlighting of the display after 150 seconds from the value set under Active Brightness to the value set under Passive Brightness. At user activity, the brightness switches back to the value set under Active Brightness. At a high temperature of the CPU, the value set under Passive Brightness is ignored and the display back-lighting is switched off.

8.2.2.1.1 Calibration

General information about sensor calibration: How a sensor is calibrated naturally depends on the prop-erties of the respective sensor. Calibration1 is carried out via the menu operation on the BlueBox or with the program AMS as part of the BlueBox PC Software. The result is a calibration polynomial of nth degree. The calibration polynomial can also be entered or changed directly with AMS, but usually the calibration poly-nomial is automatically generated after comparison with calibration measurements at certain measuring points. A calibration measurement value is the moving average of the measurement value from the last 15 seconds2. The calibration is stored in the respective sensor module.

Sensor menu 8.2.2.1 Starts the calibration procedure.

The menu operation of the BlueBox makes it possible to calibrate sensors in the connected state. The calibra-tion procedure is password-protected, see 7 Switching On the BlueBox and Password Input. For most sensors, the calibration procedure is preset, examples see Appendix B – Calibrating of a pH Sensor or Appendix C – Calibration of a Galvanic Oxygen Sensor. If the calibration procedure is not pre-set, you can press the button <Calibration mode> and select between three simple calibration modes.

Interval: Time in seconds between the end of a measurement and the end of the next measurement. ∗ Choose the interval according to the characteristics of the sensor. Each sensor requires a certain minimum period for measuring a value. Please note the data sheet of the sensor. The higher the interval is set, the fewer measurements are taken, the shorter the download time. Averaging: The measurement value is the arithmetic average of the selected number of single measurements.

8.2.4 Service Mode (Maintenance)

In this menu you can handle the service mode. If you enable the service mode the displayed time runs down. In this time:

• no data is recorded (exception: spectra are recorded)

• no actuator is switched

• no Modbus data is changed.

If a spectrometer is connected, there will be a request whether the compressed air cleaning of the spectrome-ter has to be deactivated in the service time. After the expiry of the displayed time the service mode will be disabled. The service mode is useful for system maintenance, it suppresses the recording of measurement irrelevant maintenance data.

Current output 1 bsa 503-A | Current output 2 bsa 503-B A current output is an analogue actuator and is parameterized similar to a sensor. The measurement values of an assigned sensor control a current output from 4 mA to 20 mA.

Appendix B – Calibrating of a pH Sensor The pH sensor is an electrochemical sensor. To function properly, electrochemical sensors have to recalibrate in regular intervals. This is best done weekly, but at least a monthly. As a reference you need two calibration fluids (buffer) with different pH values, e.g. pH 4 and pH 7. I n this two-point calibration, the lower value is always measured first and then the higher value. The BlueBox calculates the calibration curve. The calibration fluids (buffers) are available as accessories under the article no. 418 400X from GO. In addition you need clean tap water for rinsing of the electrodes between the calibration steps. Note: The calibration procedure described here is only operable, if in the associated sensor setup window of the AMS software the entry in the parameter field begins with "pHGlas".1

Appendix C – Calibration of a Galvanic Oxygen Sensor The galvanic oxygen sensor is an electrochemical sensor. To function properly, electrochemical sensors have to be recalibrated at regular intervals. This is best done weekly, but at least monthly.

There are three ways of calibrating a galvanic oxygen sensor.

1. Saturation calibration – Calibration in air

2. Reference calibration – Calibration with a reference measuring instrument

3. Offset calibration – Zero calibration with a reference fluid Press in the parameter display on [Menu] and in the main menu on [Sensors], then on the desired sensor and then on [Calibration].

For protection against unauthorized use, there is a password protection for this function. The password is in the configuration data sheet. see 6 The Configuration Data Sheet there 1. BlueBox at BlueBox Password (PIN) [<–] leads to the start window of the calibration

∗ The galvanic cell for oxygen measurement is located at the bottom of the sensor body, the temperature sensor is near the center. Therefore, a saturation calibration in the air can only be carried out when the entire sensor body has reached the tem- perature of the ambient air. The larger the difference in temperature between the measuring medium and the ambient air, the greater the time required for a temperature adjustment (30 minutes or more, if applicable). The temperature adjustment can be accelerated by immersing the sensor in water, which has approximately the temperature of the ambient air, before performing the saturation calibration. Moreover, abrupt temperature changes (e.g., by direct exposure to the sun) must be avoided.

Appendix E – Measurement Data Transmission with the Program USBImport This program transfers measurement data from a BlueBox in a database by means of a USB memory stick1. If not otherwise specified at installation, the USBImport.exe is located in the folder C:\Program Files\BlueBox. Precondition:

1. The USB memory stick containing a folder "Database2" on the first level was previously plugged into the USB port of a BlueBox. The BlueBox then automatically transfers all measurement data of the BlueBox into the "Database" folder.

2. The BlueBox was set up on the target system with the BlueBox SQL Software (see Manual BlueBox PC Software). Hence there is already an allocated database.

Plug the USB memory stick into a USB port of your computer. Start the program USBImport.exe. The following window appears:

Select a time range. Measurement data that had been recorded during this period is transmitted into the cor-rect database after click on <Start>. The program USBImport is part of the BlueBox PC Software.
