FALL 2013

OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Graduation from college is one of life's milestones that you will never forget.

When I introduce each Manor College graduation class, I speak confidently for the Board, the faculty, and the staff, that Manor College has done its best to ensure that our graduates have accomplished their goals.

Each Manor student sets goals based on her or his individual dreams and professional aspirations. As part of the Manor College community, you hold a responsibility to lend a hand to current students so that they may benefit as you did during your connection to Manor.

As of Fall 2013 student enrollment at Manor stands at 850. Institutional financial aid expended by the College exceeded $700,000 and assisted 223 students bridge the gap between government tuition subsidy and family support. It is my firm belief that our students graduate with the minimum amount of student loan debt.

I am proud of our high enrollment. I also find it exceptional that more than 200 of our students are not native to the United States, but come from 44 counties. Manor is earning a reputation as an international college. Of course, the majority of our international students come from Ukraine. The faculty and staff at Manor are most gratified to be able to provide tuition assistance and educate these sons and daughters of Ukraine.

I thank you for your continued support of the Manor College mission to provide its students with an education based upon the ideals and values of the Judeo-Christian tradition that are an integral part of human existence, which give purpose and meaning to education and illuminate every field of study and college life.

YOU HAVE TO JUST APPLY YOURSELF

CHRIS By Andrea Sabo

Chris was living in New York City; he was managing an upscale restaurant and lived in a beautiful apartment in Brooklyn. He gave up the exciting and colorful city life, moved back to his parent’s house, and applied to Manor College. Chris didn't feel settled in his old life and had to change his career. “I decided I wanted to be a nurse practitioner in a pediatric care facility. I would like to be a nurse whom the children will remember. I would like to hold the children’s hands and be with them in their most difficult time in the hospital. I’m determined, I researched my options, prepared my plan, and I am currently following that path,” explains Chris. He was looking into Drexel University’s Accelerated Career Entry (ACE) B.S.N. program. This 11 month intensive nursing program is designed for students who already have bachelors or/and graduate degrees. He already earned a Bachelors Degree from DeSales University, majoring in Theater in 2001. He knew his grades were not great from his first college experience, so he needed a 4.0 from Manor to get into the program. This was the perfect opportunity and a great challenge for Chris. He is a nontraditional, adult learner, which set a much higher standard in the classroom. “I was nervous to go back to school because I’m older”, says Chris. However, he fit perfectly in the middle between the students and teachers, set up study groups, always did his work on time, and helped fellow classmates who may have been struggling a bit. Students and teachers alike respected him. Chris struggled too with math. He remembered how much trouble math gave him. Math never was his strongest subject and, therefore, he began to refresh his knowledge with a basic mathematics course at Manor. Chris’ newly gained Math knowledge was useful in many science classes, and today he is tutoring Chemistry. Chris will tutor to the end of the second summer semester; and provide advice on study skills because he loves to see the progress in the students. But his teaching doesn’t stop with the academics. He draws from his life experience, provides a drive, and explains to the students, “You have to just apply yourself; nobody can do it for you!" Chris has a giving quality which is unlike others. He loves to make people feel good. Whether it is the entertainment industry, a culinary experience, or an education atmosphere, Chris’ high quality work and effort make him stand out. Thank you Chris!

TANYA SORENSON

FAR FROM HOME

On May 16, 2013, Manor College issued Associates degrees and Certificates to 168 graduates. Tanya Sorenson, a graduate from the Manor College Veterinary Technology Program, who hopes to become a Veterinarian, delivered the commencement oration during the program.

Tanya is a native of Buffalo, New York. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Cazenvia College in New York and worked for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Philadelphia when she decided to take a totally different direction with her career. Initially, Tanya was not entirely sure that she would enjoy studying veterinary

medicine because she thought it would be too sad, but after a few short months at Manor, everything changed. Tanya loved what she was studying and knows that Manor changed her life. Today, Tanya is a nurse at the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center in Levittown, PA. Tanya plans to attend veterinary school.

At Manor, Tanya was the captain of the Horse Care Team, a member of the Vet Tech Club, a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and a peer tutor for other students. Tanya was also chosen to be involved in Project Happy Running Paws, where she helped vaccinate, neuter, and spay animals at the Hopi and Zuni Indian Reservations in Arizona and New Mexico. Lastly, she did her externship at Cornell University in small animal anesthesia and at the New Bolton Center of the University of Pennsylvania doing nursing, surgical assisting, field service, equine sports medicine, and herd management.

Tanya stated, “Manor opened up so many opportunities for me that I never thought I’d have. I’ve done so many things I didn’t believe I was capable of. I met some of the best, most helpful people at Manor. My experience at Manor College taught me to try things that I thought were impossible! Now I have a job that is exciting and keeps me on my toes.”

THE BEST OF THE BEST

THE GAUSS FAMILY AT MANOR

By Andrea Sabo

The Gauss Family lives in Rockledge which is just a 15 minute walk from Manor College. Four of the five members of the family graduated or will graduate from Manor College. Liz and her husband Tom have three children. The twins are Danielle and Tommy; their youngest is Amanda. Liz never thought she was college material. Shortly after graduating from high school, she attended Ultrasound Diagnostic Tech School and obtained a certificate in diagnostic imaging. While attending school, she worked full time and got married to her high school sweetheart. After graduating from tech school, she had major surgery. She battled through a 3 month recovery and found work as an ultrasound technician. She reports that she always felt a calling for the nursing field, but never thought she was smart enough for a nursing program. Soon she became pregnant with twins and her third child 15 months later – this time she really thought she would never go back to school. However, her youngest entered kindergarten, and she applied to Manor and pursued her dream. Liz’s journey at Manor began in 2000. She entered Abington Memorial Hospital’s Dixon School of Nursing in 2004 and graduated top of her class in 2006. She currently works as a surgical nurse at Abington Hospital. Liz reported that Manor prepared her well for the nursing program. Initially she had to take remedial courses and she gradually worked her way into the honors program. She soon discovered that she not only had a passion for the

sciences, she also discovered how therapeutic writing could be. She says college wasn’t so scary for her after all. “I always wanted to be a nurse, and with every class, I felt closer to my dream, and the writing classes that I took with Dr. Madeline Seltzer, Ph.D (Mady) were liberating and therapeutic.” Mady’s open heart and approach to teaching taught me more than words can describe. Her classes helped me to grow as a person and taught me how to write creatively and professionally. Without her, I may have never have done so well. In 2013, Liz obtained her Bachelors Degree Magna Cum Laude from Immaculata University. She was also nominated by her peers for the Nursing Excellence award in 2009 and 2013. She also holds a Geriatric Nursing Certification, along with Wound, Ostomy, and Continence nurse’s certificate. Liz says she found peace at Manor through her writing courses and gained confidence as an adult learner at Manor. This enabled her to achieve her dream. Liz’s three children are pursuing their academic endeavors at Manor College. In 2013, Danielle graduated with honors from Manor and transferred to LaSalle University’s nursing program. Her hard work helped her earn a scholarship to LaSalle. Danielle’s twin brother Tommy will complete his paralegal studies this 2014. He decided to move from Montgomery County Community College into Manor’s paralegal program because he found that at Manor, individual attention, care and encouraging teachers helped him grow academically and personally. He is interested in law enforcement and plans on applying to the Police Academy upon graduation in May 2014. Amanda began her studies at Manor in 2012 and, as of date, plans on entering the Expanded Functions Dental Assisting program. Over all it, is not the proximity that keeps the Gauss family close to Manor. They are grateful to the encouraging faculty and feel fortunate to be introduced to the academic challenges that brought major changes in their lives.

DIGITAL X-RAY TECHNOLOGY

RIBBON CUTTING

At the September 30th ribbon cutting for the new digital radiography lab, Joanna Bassert, VMD, Director of the Manor College Program of Veterinary Technology emphasized, “The use of digital technology is rapidly becoming the standard of care in veterinary medicine. In the digital age, we take for granted the rapid speed with which we can obtain and transmit information. Today, veterinary practices use digital radiog-raphy routinely to capture images of various internal structures that can then be stored in computers, e-mailed to specialists, and manipulated to improve the visibility of discrete abnormalities.” Sister Cecilia thanked all the donors who contributed to the purchase of this latest piece of technology for our Vet Tech students and the animal clients they will serve. The new digital x-ray machine was installed in summer 2013. This concludes Manor’s multi-year project to renovate completely and modernize each Allied Health Laboratory and the Dental Health Clinic.
