ANNUAL GIVING SOCIETY NEWSLETTER

AUGUST 2014

OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Manor College has a tradition steeped in spirituality, heritage and culture. The Manor Mission Statement encourages these values – usually carried out through community service projects. This service element enlarges the educational and transformational process for our Manor College students.

Education holds the power to develop the potential in each of us. It is through our students’ demonstra-tion of service, of reaching out to others - often out-side of their comfort zone - that they are able to grow and develop into truly well rounded young adults. The recognition of the role which service plays in being a successful student at Manor College, as well as a successful human being, is integral in nurturing our student body.

Manor’s high caliber faculty, athletic coaches, tutors, counselors and student support resources help students through this transformation process. Each member of the Manor College faculty and student life staff is grateful to be able to touch students’ lives. Faculty and staff are commended for this heartwarming and deep influence, which recognizes the value of community service to advance mutual dignity and respect.

Each year, students demonstrate their commitment to Manor’s mission through an overwhelming number of active service projects helping the needy and the suffering. Every department and academic program acknowledges the important part service plays in education.

Manor College is moving forward in our academic programs, student activities and social amenities on campus - but particularly in the celebration of the integrity and humanity expressed through community service.

Sincerely, Sr. Mary Cecilia Jurasinski, OSBM Sr. Mary Cecilia Jurasinski, OSBM President

THE JACQUELYN RILOFF STORY ALUMNI SUCCESS STORY “I’m not a typical success story. Success can’t be measured just by a good GPA, or how many awards you win, but what you feel inside. Your passion and how determined you are to invest in yourself will help others,” says Jackie.

Jacquelyn Riloff received a Rotary Scholarship for the 2014 Fall semester.

Jackie graduated from Manor College in May 2011 with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. She recently returned to Manor to pursue her second undergraduate degree in Psychology, and this coming fall will start at Temple University pursuing a Dual Baccalau-reate Degree in Psychology and Human Resource Management. Between her two Associate Degrees, Jackie took some time off from school to care for her grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

“A college degree unlocks an assortment of doors for many people,” says Jackie. However, she had terrible experiences in elementary school, and high school was just as horrifying. She almost believed she is “not college material.” After Jackie graduated from high school, she started to work in the human resources field. Manor College gave her the opportunity to be successful and receive skills that led her farther along her carrier path. She discovered her personal strengths and enjoyed her work with people, despite her prior unpleasant educational experiences, but Jackie still felt the fear of failing.

“Manor College changed my entire life, socially and academically, from the moment I walked in the door” explained Jackie. She was president of the Student Senate and the college Rotaract club. She was a member of Alpha Beta Gamma, the Business Studies Honor Society, a student ambassador and a member of the Campus Ministry. Jackie participated in the Harvard National Model United Nations competition and was a member of the college theatre guild.

It never dawned on Jackie that the help she offered in service to others would transform her life, and Rotaract would be a major part of that transformation. In 2009, she was treasurer and later elected president of the Manor College Rotaract Club. Jackie became a fundraising advocate for Lupus, raised money for Polio Plus and for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. In 2010 and 2011 she was a Rotaract Representative at the Rotary District 7450. After she graduated, she joined the Philadelphia Rotaract Club, and remains actively involved in the Rotary.

The Rotary awarded Jackie the 2014 Rotary District 7450 Undergraduate Scholarship. The Rotary membership recognized Jackie’s qualities as a dedicated young leader whose passion is serving others. This September, Jackie will attend Temple University. She confesses: “I feel proud of myself, putting myself back in school. To be honest, the size of Temple University scares me a little, especially coming from a small college, but I think the opportunity to attend Temple will reveal the reason why I am going to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in the first place, to enhance my life and excel in my career.”

To Friends

In twilight resounds the song “Night approaches… Lets us stand at attention with Respect, my Friends! Let us remember those who have passed on To the eternal camp fire, where there are no worries, And let us sing in our Plast circle For them and in their memory: Here reigns God… Here reigns God… Here reigns God...

“Frivolously spending is out these days! Invest in something solid like the

impact a donation to Manor can have on just one student. Twenty six years

ago, I was the student on the receiving end of such generosity. Truly, two

years at Manor changed my life and I consider it my personal responsibility to

pay it backwards.”
