A year ago livestock own-ers were feeling fairly com-fortable. The winter wasmild, and abundant rainfallin 2011 meant that feed wasplentiful. Now things aretougher.

There is plenty of hayat the weekly auctionsat United Producers, inManchester, but prices areway up due to a nationalhay shortage.

Buyers said that priceswere double, or in somecases triple, what they werea year ago.

Anyone with animalshas been affected, hor-

rendously, said Liz Waffle, who was bidding for hayto feed cattle, horses andsheep at her farm in Milan.

According to the U.S.Department of Agriculture, national production of hayin 2012 was around 120-million tons, which is thelowest amount since 1964.

Michigan hay productionwas down more than 30 per-cent from 2011.

Some hay fields wereconverted into corn produc-

tion, due to high corn pric-es. The first alfalfa cuttingwas poor in many places, including Michigan, as aresult of early warm weath-

er and late frosts. Then theprolonged summer droughtdid more damage.

Richard Godwin, ofAdrian, said he only got

one good cutting last year.Local farmers usually

have fields planted withalfalfa or grasses, and startcutting in May. Typicallythey might get three cutsduring the season, depend-ing on the weather andtheir needs. Hay is baledand kept for the farmersown use, with surplusessold privately or going toauction.

Due to the poor localyields hay is now beingtrucked in from Kentuckyand Tennessee for sale atthe United Producers auc-tion.

Livestock owners arecoping with the shortage byfeeding their animals dif-

ferent mixes of hay typesand adding processed feedand other silage.

Andrea Peterson, ofDexter, had to reduce thenumber of horses shekeeps, and the remaininganimals are being fed haycubes and pellets along

The event will be simi-lar to the street dances ofyears past but also bringin aspects from events thathave taken place throughoutthe village, she said.
