Energy & storage systems MAN molten salt energy storage (MOSAS) is an economical and flexible technology that can be integrated in various applications. It stores the heat of renewable energies directly, e.g. from concentrated solar power (CSP), or indirectly via electric heaters or heat pumps. The heat is later converted into steam to directly feed the consumer or to power a steam turbine and generate electricity when there is no sunshine or wind. Storage systems based on MAN MOSAS achieve excellent efficiency due to the high operating temperature and heat transfer properties of molten salt. Grid stabilization is needed

Theenergysectoristhemain producerofCO2emissions. Conventional power plant retrofits

Long-termstoragesystemslike moltensaltaresuitableforretrofits,forinstanceasareplacementforcoal-firedsteamgenerationpartsinanexistingcoalplant.Byaddingelectricheatersorheatpumps(drivenbyrenewableenergysources), storagetanks,andmoltensaltheat exchangersforsteamgeneration,therestoftheplant’sfacilities,suchaspowerblockandcoolingsystems,canbekeptinplace.Thus,atruly decarbonizedgenerationassetcanbecreatedbymodifyingexistingplantswithreducedinvestmentcostscomparedtoanewbuiltplant.

Long-duration energy storage

Renewableenergyisusedtorunanelectricheaterorheatpumptoheatupcoldmoltensalt,whichisthenpumpedintoahotmoltensaltstoragetank.Fordischarging,thehotmoltensaltisprocessedfurtherthroughasteamgenerator,followedbyelectrificationinasteamturbinecycle.Therefore,thecombinationofrenewableenergywithMOSASprovidestherequisitedispatchabilityoffering“higher-value”electricitytothegridorthecustomer.

Energy recovery

MANMOSAScanoptimizeindustrialbatchprocesseswithhighfluegastemperatures.Bytransferringfluegasenergytothemoltensaltstorage,thefluctuationiscompensatedforandcontinuousenergyproductionispossible,therebyreducingthecostsassociatedwiththeprocess.

Concentrated solar power

Incombinationwithconcentratedsolarpower(CSP),MANMOSAS offersasustainablewaytoachievelowlevelizedcostsofelectricity(LCOE)andincreasedcapacity factorsintheSunBeltregion.Bystoringthermalenergyinan integratedmoltensaltenergystoragesystem,CSPplantscankeep operatingatnighttimeorwhenthesunisnotshining.

Power-to-heat

Forcharging,thesameprincipleasaboveisapplied.Fordischarging,steamgeneratedinthemoltensaltsteamgeneratorisfedtotheconsumers.Forspecialapplications,thehotmoltensaltmaybedirectlyusedforprocessheating.Hence,MOSASconnectedtoarenewableenergysourceensuressectorcoupling,allowingdecarbonizationofindustrialheatgenerationwithhighsteamdemands.
