    My journey

Before starting my MBA I worked as

a project manager in the automotiveindustry. I was also a keen investorin the markets and wanted to makethe transition into the City. I choseMBS as the School offered so manyhands on opportunities to developthe skills I needed to change career. For example, I learned to prepareand deliver a pitch through the ATKearney Case Competition, whilethe IB project helped develop myentrepreneurial and marketing skillsin an international context.

Immediately after graduating I startedworking at Merrill Lynch as an EquityAnalyst and, today, I am a Directorin Equity Research at UBS. The MBA

denitely helped me achieve my goalof working in the markets and I still usewhat I learned everyday.Arnaud Giblat, FrenchDirector in Equity Research,UBS Investment Bank, Class of 2006

Your rst challenge takes place at the Brathay Trust inthe beautiful wilderness of the Lake District during thepre-MBA stage. But this is no gentle weekend awayto relax and get to know your fellow students. At MBS

we dont believe in breaking you in gently. For three days you will be workingclosely with your new classmatesto tackle a series of exciting andstimulating challenges. Activities rangefrom building bridges and abseilingdown trees, to creating theatricalperformances. These are intended totest your physical, creative and mentalagility and improve your problemsolving, decision-making and, mostimportantly, team working skills. Theyalso provide an excellent opportunityfor you to get to know your fellow MBAclassmates.

Self-reectionAll of the activities at Brathay aredesigned to help you understand moreabout yourself and the way you workwith others, so self-reection playsa key role. During the event you willlearn more about the impact of yourbehaviour in different contexts, how togive and receive feedback e ffectively, and how to approach problem solving, task achievement and decision takingin groups. It is also your opportunity toexplore and test your own leadershipstyle in a trusting, supportive, non-assessed environment.

The Brathay experience is the nalpart of our month-long pre-MBAprogramme. It lays the foundations forthe Skills for Successful Managementcomponent of the MBA, whichcontinues throughout your rst-

    The last wordThe last word

The Manchester MBA offers an intenseMBA experience. We are highly selectiveand we pride ourselves on recruitingan international cohort from a diverserange of industry sectors. Workingcollaboratively is a major part of theManchester learning process so therst month, our pre-MBA, is particularlyexciting as we concentrate on team

building and ensuring that theindividual MBAs develop a class identity.

Following on from the pre-MBAthe rst part of the programmeconcentrates on developing a soundfoundation upon which you can build. So the initial courses, delivered by ourinternationally renowned faculty, focuson core subjects and developing skillsbased on a rigorous analytical approach. This is the time when you start tobuild your future networks, both with

your peer group and our worldwidealumni community.

The Manchester MBA adopts a practice-based approach to managementeducation. From very early on you willbe working with clients on real worldbusiness problems. In fact, throughout

the programme you will have up to 600hours of interaction with commercialclients. Our challenging projects, whichinclude working with a range of clientsfrom not-for-prot organisations tointernational blue chips, continuallygive you the opportunity to put what

you learn into practice. The last cohorthas been working on projects around

the globe including Canada, Australia,Tajikistan and India these really areopportunities for MBAs to genuinelyapply the skills they have developed.

Successful applicants already haveoutstanding interpersonal skills whenthey join us. However, we recognise thatto succeed in challenging economictimes with rapidly changing marketconditions requires highly tunedleadership and negotiation skills. Withthis in mind we have increased theproportion of the MBA that deals withgeneral management and leadershipskills. We have new courses in resiliencetraining and conict resolution, weveincreased the consultancy skills trainingon the programme and introducednegotiation skills as part of the corecontent of the MBA.

Weve also been focusing on providinga more tailored approach. As part of theprogramme, Manchester MBAs alreadyhave the opportunity to undertake aninternship and international exchangebut we are now broadening the rangeof electives on offer and extending ourGold Mentoring programme so thatmore MBAs can be offered alumni

    mentoring.

I am especially pleased to see that therange of social events continues todevelop. We now offer all our MBAs theopportunity to participate in the MBATexperience, we have a range of socialevents embedded in the MBA calendar, including the alumni and MBA balls, and we have extended the time spentin the UKs Lake District as part of thepre-MBA.

The Manchester MBA is the experienceof a lifetime. I hope youll join us.
