Set in a complementing historic building, the museum presents a multifaceted overview of art and artistic expression in Malta from the Late Medieval period to the contemporary. The palace was officially inaugurated as the National Museum of Fine Arts in 1974 and has since then been Malta’s most important museum for the arts. Highlights from the collection on display include paintings by leading local and internationally acclaimed artists, precious Maltese silverware, statuary in marble bronze and wood, fine furniture items and splendid majolica pieces.

Dragut (also called Turgut Reis), Barbary pirate and Ottoman admiral (1514-1565), operating largely along the Barbary coast. Dragut was a protege of Barbarossa (Khayr ed-Din). He was known as a cruel and brutal opponent, and feared among many Christians. His line was closer to the sultan of Constantinople than the local North Africans. His home town would be named after him, Turgutreis. Dragut joins the Ottoman forces in an attack on Malta and June 23 1565 is killed in battle on the ramparts of Fort Saint Elmo. Dragut's body is brought to Tripoli, and buried in the mosque named after him.
