Whether you are already an Africa safari fanatic or first time Africa traveller, we believe you will truly

love and enjoy our brand new African Safari - MalZimZam – a very special and unique itinerary.

MalZimZam is special because Trish and Jim have lovingly designed this relaxed itinerary to offer

many wonderful wildlife experiences, in a variety of beautiful African eco systems. At all times, we

strive to avoid the crowds and tourists and always travel in comfort and style without ‘over doing it’.

MalZimZam is unique because throughout our Safari, we will enjoy the professional services of our

friends who own and operate many of the Safari Lodges, Safari camps and mobile, comfortable

camping Safari companies that we will utilise. Last, but definitely not least – Trish and I love our

role as Safari Hosts. We are going because we love the itinerary, we enjoy small group travel, and of

course we love ‘being on safari’ in Africa.

If you are fun loving, have a zest for life and want to enjoy the company of a very small group (max

Back Track Adventures offer a NEW and EXCITING comfortable African safari experience. Aimed  at  the discerning traveller, who enjoys friendly service, and well paced itineraries that strive to provide a personal experience shared within a small group environment. Part of this experience is where we stay, how we travel, good food and wines, professional friendly guides and much more. This safari itinerary has never been offered in Australia before. It is ground breaking because it is only possible due to the personal relationships developed with our friends in the safari industry in Africa.

A Small GroupSafari in Comfort & Style

We travel in a style that we are happy to class as very comfortable. However, as long as you do not demand gold plated toilet buttons and can enjoy a hot shower occasionally in a well set up shower tent, then you will enjoy this authentic safari experience. You will share the campfire and dinner table on many nights with Zimbabwe and Zambia’s top safari guides.

Most people go on safari primarily to experience the wildlife. Though we never guarantee that you will have a cheetah jump into the back seat of the vehicle with you, we can guarantee that we are up for a breathtaking wildlife experience, all in comfort and style.

Where we stayOccasionally our accommodation is luxurious, however, overall we always stay in very comfortable, secure and interesting accommodation in every location.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE

Throughout we stay in a carefully selected variety of 5 and 3 star hotels, a rustic island hideaway resort, luxury lodges and well set up, well located, and very comfortable bush camps deliberately chosen to be off the beaten tourist trails.

STYLISH HOTELS

At Zomba we stay in a modern, comfortable 3 star hotel with breathtaking views, At Chipata and Lusaka we stay in modern, well equipped 3-4 star local hotels.

COMFORTABLE CAMPING

Camping has never been so comfortable. We camp in 2 locations, for 3 nights in each camp. This will ensure we maintain a relaxed pace and that you will experience life in the true African bush where the wildlife rule. We are the privileged visitors in their sanctuaries.

We arrive in both camps with no duties except to enjoy the atmosphere of

Africa under canvas. The sounds of the wildlife at night, is a never to be forgotten experience. Both our camps in Hwange and Mana Pools are very substantial camps featuring dining areas, some thatched relaxation and entertainment areas, walk in roomy tents with all bedding, pillows, doonas, lights and all necessary furniture, as well as hot showers and clean toilets. All our bush camps are patrolled at night by safari staff to ensure we are not visited by curious local wildlife. You may have an elephant or two drop in for lunch occasionally.

LODGES

At South Luangwa our lodge is very beautiful and set up overlooking the bush and the Luangwa River where hippos and elephants frequent. It has all the facilities expected of an authentic African Lodge, with spacious communal lounges and dining and entertaining areas, perfect for enjoying Sundowner drinks and robust conversation

after  a long Day exploring in the wild African bush.

The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge will be our last home on safari and is located on the outskirts of Victoria Falls town bordering the National Park. This means we are often visited by the local wildlife. It is amazing experience to be on the Lodge transfer bus heading into town for some shopping only to be stopped by a large elephant that has set up a “road block’ in order to monitor the comings and goings from the Lodge. Being on safari does not stop when you arrive in Victoria Falls.

How we travelTRANSPORT

Our safari has been organised so we will not need to use our own heavy duty overland vehicles such as our favourite vehicle, “The Beast” which we have available for safaris like our annual Great Southern Safari from Victoria Falls to Windhoek in Namibia. On MalZimZam we have contracted local companies throughout to provide comfortable

small bus transport. Where the roads are bad or distances are far too long, we will over fly to our next destination.

MEALS

All meals except for 7 lunches are provided as part of the safari cost. Lunches provided by yourself are required on some travel Days when we will stop at a convenient restaurant and when we may all be out doing our own sightseeing around Victoria Falls. At Mana Pools and Hwange, safari camps most alcohol is provided. At Mumbo Island and South Luangwa, no alcoholic drinks are provided as part of the tour cost. You are welcome to bring your own special malt whisky, favourite port etc. At Mumbo and South Luangwa, there will be a safari bar where all drinks can be purchased at modest prices. Southern Africa is famous for its wines.

PARTICIPATION

Throughout you will be accompanied by your Back Track Escorts and hosts, Jim and Trish. Their role is to ensure the smooth flow of your safari, attend

to all the paperwork and other duties. Your role is to have an exciting, safe, relaxing, stress and worry free holiday. Are you up for it?

THE AFRICAN WILDLIFE

Our safari will bring us into close proximity with wild animals. By this we do not mean your safari companions. Our camp sites in Mana Pools and Hwange are very safe and secure and will be patrolled at all times. At all times that we are in areas where there are wild animals, there will be some rules and regulations that we will all abide to. On those occasions we will always be accompanied by licensed professional guides. Their qualifications are of the highest standards and we are fully licensed to travel in all the safari areas on this itinerary.

Our Guides skills and bush capabilities ensure our safety. You are in very caring and safe hands throughout your holiday.

DAY 1: BLANTYRE (ZAMBIA)

Fly into Blantyre, the second largest city and commercial centre of Malawi. At the airport we will be met by our transfer vehicle. It is a 65K, ( approx. 1 hour), drive through pretty coffee and tea plantations to Zomba, the former capital and seat of government of Malawi, situated at the bottom of the Zomba Plateau. From Zomba Town, it is another half hour drive to our accommodation at a very comfortable hotel located at the top of the mountain. The drive up to our hotel offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains. Views from the top of the plateau were described in colonial times as “the best in the British Empire.” (D)

DAY 2: CAPE MACLEAR

After breakfast we enjoy a 3 hour scenic drive to the southern shores of Lake Malawi. This lake, the third largest in Africa, dominates the eastern part of the country covering 20% of Malawi’s total area. We overnight at a very comfortable lodge at Cape Maclear, the starting point of our visit to Lake Malawi National Park, the first freshwater National Park in the world and a World Heritage Site. (BD)

DAY 3 & 4: MUMBO ISLAND

This morning we will be transferred by boat to Mumbo Island situated 10km offshore from Cape Maclear. Mumbo Island is a pristine island in Lake Malawi National Park.

The camp itself is perched on rocks high above the water and blends in perfectly to create a place of rustic charm and minimal impact. Tucked into the lush foliage, each tented bungalow is fully furnished with its own shaded view-deck and hammock. There is a dining area, bar and water sport gazebo, all of timber, thatch and canvas, and all adhering to the principles of

eco-architecture. There are hot bucket showers and “eco-loos”. The entire camp is an ecologically sensitive development.

Unlike most island destinations in the region, Mumbo Island has never been populated by humans and is still in its natural state. Activities focus on non-motorised water sports, the most popular being snorkeling through the crystal-clear waters (equipment provided), other activities include, swimming, kayaking, and bird watching. We have the option of boating or paddling, exploring the granitic islands in a freshwater Rift Valley lake.

Mumbo is also a PADI registered resort offering beginner, advanced and specialty courses, as well as gear hire and casual dives – this is at extra cost.

If all this sounds too hectic there is the option of just lazing in a hammock or in the ‘chill-out’ area, contemplating the stunning scenery! A wonderful relaxed way to commence our African safari experience. (BLD)

DAY 5: CHIPATA

Today we leave “the warm heart of Africa” as Malawi is known and enter Zambia. This is our only long day on the whole safari. It is approximately 380 kilometres to Chipata travelling over Dedza pass up onto the Central Plateau, via the Capital of Malawi, Lilongwe. Once we cross the border into Zambia,

we will have arrived in one of Africa’s less commercialised safari destinations. Here we will enjoy a far more ‘authentic’ view of the ‘wilds of Africa’. We overnight in a lovely hotel at the town of Chipata, close to our access point for South Luangwa National Park. (BD)

DAY 6, 7 & 8: SOUTH LUANGWA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast we drive to South Luangwa National Park, a world-renowned wildlife haven. We will have three nights at the very charming Kafunta River Lodge, located on the banks of the Luangwa River, overlooking a game-rich flood plain.

From the Lodge we will do at least two game activities a day, which will include morning and late afternoon / night game drives into South Luangwa National Park in open 4 x 4 vehicles, accompanied by qualified guides. There are also opportunities for us to do game walks with a qualified and highly experienced safari guide and armed National Park rangers who will escort us safely into the true and unspoilt African bush.

During our stay we will find time to a visit a local community to learn about their way of life and culture. The Kuanda people are a friendly and proud people who welcome visitors and are happy to share their culture and traditions. Guides from our Lodge will join us on these excursions and will advise us about correct behavior and courtesy. During our visit to the village

Page 8: Malawi.Zimbabwe.Zambia. Safari in Africa in 2013

Page 8 | Back Track Adventures MalZimZam - Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia 2013

www.backtrackadventures.com.au

we will learn about the daily life of the people as well as their traditions. It is an amazing way to get in touch with the people whose country we are visiting. (BLD)

DAY 9: LUSAKA

Today, in order to avoid a long drive on a bad road, we have arranged a flight to Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. On arrival at Lusaka airport we will be met by our transfer vehicle. We will head for our Safari Lodge accommodation, located within its own small private game reserve near Lusaka. This is an ideal stopover en route to Manna Pools in Zimbabwe, our next exciting wildlife destination. (BD)

DAY 10, 11 & 12: MANA POOLS NATIONAL PARK (ZIMBABWE)

We make our way to Zimbabwe and Mana Pools National Park via Chirundu Border Post. Border crossings are always fun and interesting as there is so much hustle and bustle. At the entrance to Mana Pools National Park, we will be met by our 4wd safari vehicles and transferred deep into the park to our safari camp. Mana Pools National Park is a World heritage site on the flood plains of the Lower Zambezi River and was rated in 2009, as the 4th most beautiful Park in the world by National Geographic.

We will be accommodated in a mobile-tented camp, based on the banks of the Zambezi River, overlooking the slow moving waters of this mighty river. The camp is fitted out with large walk in style insect proof tents with beds, linen, pillows, warm doonas, and comfortable chairs. Hot showers and clean toilets are all part of the camp facilities. We dine in the dinner tent or

under the stars at night. Our river camp caters for a large range of inclusive activities:

• fishing off the banks of this famous river for bream, vundu, chessa or, with luck, the notorious fighting tiger fish.

• canoeing is another favourite, paddling past pods of hippo and sighting the odd crocodile slipping into the water.

• through the bush with our professional guides, who are there to talk us through the interaction of the fauna and flora.

• game drives give us the opportunity to cover this vast area, with the prospect of some amazing sightings.

A typical day whilst in Mana will see us starting the day with a cup of coffee and a light breakfast before heading out in open 4 x 4 vehicles. We use the vehicles to get to a predestined area for a walk, or until we cross fresh tracks of something interesting which we can follow on foot; maybe lions, wild dogs, a large herd of buffalo or walk up to some of the big old elephant bulls which Mana is so well known for. After our morning activities we head back to camp for lunch, followed by a short siesta. Afternoon tea is followed by canoeing on the river for those who choose to, or another walk/drive. Canoeing is certainly a highlight as it is a unique activity and not many parks offer the opportunity, especially not with the abundance of wild life as in Mana. You can select to be as active or lazy as you wish. It is a holiday. (BLD)

DAY 13, 14 & 15: HWANGE NATIONAL PARK

Once again today, in the interests of comfort and to save valuable time, we will take a light aircraft flight to Hwange National Park, the largest National Park in Zimbabwe, hosting

Page 9: Malawi.Zimbabwe.Zambia. Safari in Africa in 2013

MalZimZam - Malawi, Zimbabwe and Zambia 2013 Back Track Adventures | Page 9

www.backtrackadventures.com.au

over 100 mammal and 400 bird species. The elephants of Hwange are world famous and the Park’s elephant population is one of the largest in the world. From Hwange airport we drive with our qualified guides to a remote, private safari camp, located near Shumba Pan in the Sinamatella region of the Park.

Walking safaris with extremely knowledgeable guides will be a highlight of our time in Hwange, although game drives with the same guides will be as informational. Zimbabwean guides are renowned for their knowledge and passion of all aspects of the bush, and are more than willing to share this wealth of information with us. Accommodation is in very comfortable “bungalows”, ensuite tents under thatch all of which overlook a well visited waterhole. (BLD)

DAY 16: VICTORIA FALLS

After breakfast, we are transferred through to Victoria Falls and the very luxurious Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. From the balcony of your room, you can view any wildlife that visits the waterhole located directly below our lodge. We will have a meeting this afternoon to plan our optional activities for the next 2 days. (BD)

DAY 17 & 18: VICTORIA FALLS

Victoria Falls is yet another World Heritage Site that we will explore on this safari. They are claimed to be the largest sheet of falling water in the world, and are a spectacular sight to witness.

Our days will be taken up with various optional activities of which there are numerous on offer. We will definitely be taking you all on a guided tour of the Falls as part of the tour itinerary

and our last evening on Safari we will experience the famous ‘Boma Dinner”. As Victoria Falls will be our last stop on safari, it offers the chance to purchase some excellent pieces of African art from the multitude of shops and markets in the area. As Victoria Falls is Back Track’s base in Southern Africa, and Trish’s home we will ensure that we finish our journey to Africa with a fun time. (BD)

DAY 19 : DEPART VICTORIA FALLS

We will be transferred to the International Airport for our flight home. (B)

Back Track Adventures offers you the perfect balance between achieving a once in a lifetime African Safari Experience with value for money AND comfort. Our safari is not luxury but It is a top quality, comfortable holiday with great service from a dedicated crew. Trish (above-right) was born in Zimbabwe and together with her husband Garth are Directors of African Journeys (AJ), a safari company based in Victoria Falls. Back Track have been working with AJ for over 10 years and during that period we have operated many wonderful and unique safaris together, including the popular 25 day Great Southern Safari. Escorting our safaris is a way of life. Trish is a fun travel companion and her knowledge and experience of the African bush adds immensely to the enjoyment of the safari.

Jim (above left) has had a love affair with Africa since his first visit to Zimbabwe in the 80’s and has escorted many African safaris over the last 25 years from Kenya to Cape Town. During that time he has continued his guiding duties in regions all over the world, but continues to come back to Africa and in particular Southern Africa. Like many others Jim has fallen in love with the wilds of Africa and will grasp at any opportunity to get back into the African bush. He has a deep knowledge of the Africa eco systems in which you will be visiting and looks forward to sharing a wonderful experience with you.
