BOXED UP

Ri vha vhudza zwo tou ralo! (Bangakupalula)

we tell it like it is!

By Risima Faith Mashila

I hate the box. Yes the box, which labels us and restrain us from individuality. The box which boxes us up then puts us in a shelf with other boxes which are placed under similar captions. I am talking about a box called “society”. My problem with society is that it thinks it knows what is best for me. I am saying that as an understatement for society thinks it knows me and for that I don’t like society very much. “Society is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.” Well, at least that is what Wikipedia says. I hate society as soon as it starts telling me that I cannot wear socks in summer because it does not make fashion sense and then the very next summer it tells people that they can wear socks in summer because it looks great. I hate society when it puts ideas into my head that the girl on TV is greater than me because she is thinner and has a spot free face, therefore I should buy their product because I will look and feel just as happy, but what it doesn’t tell you is how you are supposed to feel when it doesn’t work. I hate society because it promises us better services and free stuff just to get into our good books, but as soon as it doesn’t need us anymore it dumps us like the trash it thinks we are. I would sincerely like us to be friends, but I draw the line when you start to put me down instead of picking me up when I fall or lose sight of the important things in life. I would like us to live in harmony and share a piece of bread when one of us can’t afford any. I would like us to go back to basics when you were a companion and as long as we were together life would always be better. Let us go back to a time when what was mine was yours and a helping hand was always within reach. Can we please go back to a time when life didn’t revolve around money, fame and your selfish tendencies?....Dear society, if nothing at all just let me be an individual and on that note I shall take a bow.

This is one artist who never shies away from letting his creativity stand out on every lyric he throws. Let’s find out a little bit more...* Who is Elphonic?

Elphonic is an 18 year old rapper from Sibasa, the name was derived from Lutendo (my name) and phonic, meaning the sound of words, it’s a combination of me as a person and my flow/the way I rap. * What inspires your music and makes it different and unique not only in Venda, but the world?

My style of writing is more based on inspiring people and emotional expression.* How would you describe yourself in one short sentence?

A strong mind and a creative love filled heart.* Is music your only hustle?

No, I am currently doing my second year of my Visual Communication degree at Open Window School of Visual Arts in Pretoria.* How far do you see yourself going in the industry?

My goal is to do all that is said to be impossible in our SA hip hop industry, in terms of international boundaries,

record sales and everything.* What South African artists would you like to collaborate with?

I’d say AKA, Bucie, Tumi from the volume, Khuli Chana and maybe even Percy Mukwevho.* Do you listen to any other types of music besides hip hop?

Yes, I’m actually very versatile and draw inspiration from a lot of classics like the likes of Stevie Wonder and Jimmi Hendrix. * Besides music and school, what do you do in your spare time?

A lot of designing, I play a lot of video games, occasionally go out, and just enjoy the company of the people close to me, and watching a lot of cartoons.* Are you currently signed to anyone or looking to be?

I’m building my own record label called the Elite and Prestige, which in future will promote home Venda based talent and it currently has 5 members.* What are you currently working on?

I just finished recording a mixtape and I have been pushing some of its singles as far as Botswana radio, and for now my main aim is to build a proper fan base before an album which is due out next year.* What’s your life motto?

In God we trust and in good music we stand.

To get hold of him you can send an email to [email protected] or his manager, Mpho on [email protected] or [email protected]

Youth is always celebrated - Reboile MotswaseleYouth is always celebrated - Reboile MotswaseleReboile Motswasele

was born in Tlhabane, Rustenburg, 17 January.

Being celebrated nationally, Reboile is a graphic designer-

cum-layout designer who has so far designed books for some Limpopo-based publishers as well. She claims

that she lives by dwelling in the truth of who she is – as dynamic as that may sound. She holds an open mind, trying not to judge too much, letting things be what they are.

* How do you define yourself as an artist? Are you a graphic

designer or layout designer …?When I was younger I believed I had a greater sense of this

‘definition’, but as you incorporate into the

larger corporate world this becomes toned down quite a lot. I do not believe that I will ever have a concrete definition of myself as an artist, but I will

have a strong essence of and around my artistry. * Have you always wanted to become a designer?

Yes and no. I grew up creating things and drawing. Artistic ability is something you are born with - well you hone it with formal education and more training. This is what I know how to do best, it is ingrained in me. I started taking art lessons at Mmabana Mmabatho, a place where I had great time and achieved much. Then I went to an art school, Pro Arte Alphen Park in Menlo Park Pretoria, then Wits Technikon for a National Diploma in Graphic Design. * What are some of the works you have designed so far and what had been the responses from your clients and even the public to whom the work arrive?

You shall have to visit my website (www.tswasi.co.za). The response I receive is mostly of great appreciation. It is such a pleasure really! My clientele has grown from referrals – such a blessing! * To what extent do you enjoy being an artist who designs such beautiful works?

Any type of creative work holds in it a spark of inspiration – and this might dictate the unfolding of the creative process. Most of the briefs I get are exciting and it becomes easy to get inspired, brainstorm how different elements and metaphors come together.

* Who is your inspiration?

Firstly my family with their diverse personalities. The friends I keep around me. Artistically I have always enjoyed Salvador Dali, a Spanish Surrealist; Paul Rand, George Pemba, Noria Mabasa, Leonard Cohen. Nature as well, I have learned and been inspired greatly by cats. Books of many subjects and genre – fantastic!* What are your regrets?

They are not regrets, just hard-knock lessons. I think Jay-Z captured it well. They are building stones only unique in one’s life story.* Are you able to sustain yourself through your artistic works?

Well so far yes; it is not the easiest route but it is part of who I am. You learn a lot about yourself when you go on your own. * What are your challenges as a nationally recognised graphic designer?

Youth is always celebrated , but I always come across situations where people find it hard to believe that I can provide the services they are requiring, and when you successfully do, the question is who is in the background!

Makoya says cheers to you, Reboile.Thanks. And cheers!

You can make the most of the year ahead by believing in yourself, having a personal vision, setting goals and working hard to achieve them!

LoveLife is running its empowering lovingLife programme in schools, clinics, community-based organisations and loveLife Y-Centres (youth centres) countrywide.

Offering a wealth of information, lovingLife includes knowledge on how to go about achieving your goals. loveLife is encouraging young people to have goals for the future because youth who believe tomorrow will be better than today, that they have something to look forward to and live for, are more likely to protect themselves from HIV.

“Goals are small, manageable actions that we make towards achieving our vision,” explains Nkagare Makhudu, loveLife’s National Manager for Youth Leadership Development. “To achieve your dreams, it’s important to believe in yourself and trust your abilities. Don’t be afraid to aim high and keep your eye on your goals.” Having a Personal Vision

A vision is the answer to the following question:

“Where do I want to go?” We all have the ability to see ourselves in a way that we create in our minds. We can see ourselves pass a grade at school with high marks, for example. Every famous celebrity, sportsperson, community leader and entrepreneur had a vision for their lives. Most of the time, it is the reason why they were able to achieve what they did.

Without a clear vision for your life, it’s not easy to achieve much. If you don’t know where you’re going, how will you get there? When you look at your life in 10, 20 or even 50 years time from now – what do you see? What do you feel? What are your desired academic qualifications? What work will you be doing? What will your family be like? Where will you be living? All these things, and more, together make your personal vision. Your vision is personal because you’re the only one who imagines how it looks and feels. Setting Personal Goals

How exactly do we go about setting effective, achievable goals? Once we know what we want to achieve in the long term, then we’re able to determine what we need to do over short periods

of time to achieve the vision. Always ensure that you set SMART Goals: S – stands for specific; M – stands for measurable; A – stands for achievable; R – stands for realistic and T- stands for time-framed. By mastering these areas, we’re able to set clear goals that we’ll achieve over the stipulated period. The Value of Hardwork

Every successful person has dedicated hours of hard work towards achieving their goals and dreams. Believing in ourselves and having goals and plans is vital, but as important as these steps are, they’ll mean nothing unless we’re prepared to work hard and be disciplined. Facing Setbacks

In working to achieve your goals you’ll probably come across setbacks. But people who’ve become successful have had many setbacks. The one thing that differentiates them from less successful people is that they didn’t give up. They tried and tried until they achieved what they aimed for. Stay focussed on achieving your goals – Nakanjani (no matter what).

Mac- J of Mac Fam is always on face book, which makes one to wonder

whether he loves his fans or the spotlight. The dude is very creative and I admire that, but how does he

balance his time between Face book, Music and School? Then it means that when he is not working he is

on Face book or studying, and then we do not see traces of a girlfriend.

Maybe he is going by the saying that “the beautiful ones are not yet born”

Get a life dude!

The musical gurus are back! It’s like all this time they have been waiting for the right moment to arrive.

Guess what, they are here to stay. When talking about a band of this caliber, we are talking history; passion and the list is endless! Everyone, young or old, this is the convergence zone. The album really created the sharing spirit as parents and kids can now have something in common. I like the track “Nwana O Ngalangala” which is known across the board! It was produced by the hard hand world class producer Mulalo “mastermind” Mukwevho.

This is their twelfth studio album which has and already sold over three thousand copies in a very short space of time! When we are talking about quality, this is the album to go by!
