What to expect in 2017

Youth in AgribusinessYoung agriprofessionals are often ex-cluded from accessing services for their agribusiness activities. The AgriProFo-cus Kenya network members would like to contribute to increase the number of youth led agribusinesses to contri-bute to the development of the sec-tor. Dairy and horticulture specifically provide opportunities for the youth to engage with the industry players. Young farmers are in need of linking to resources, and other growth opportu-nities including internship, mentorship and business development services.

The AgriProFocus Kenya team will build on mapping of stakeholders working with youth. We will work towards crea-ting an enabling environment that sup-port young women and men to build successful enterprises.

Inclusive & Sustainable AgribusinessAgriProFocus Kenya recognizes that a vibrant and innovative agri-food sec-tor underpins inclusive and sustainable economic opportunities for the benefit of all. In order to tackle poverty, inequa-lity and food insecurity, governments, business and development need to col-laborate and partner to develop inno-vative inclusive business models.

AgriProFocus Kenya, through its lin-king and learning activities such as the business-to-business forums and national and county multi-stakeholder forums would like to contribute to the inclusiveness and sustainability of the agribusiness sector in Kenya. A special focus of our team will be on inclusive finance and extensive livestock produc-tion.

Horticulture The AgriProFocus Kenya network mem-bers have been active in the horticultu-re sector in the past 5 years. There is an increasingly growing middle class in Kenya which has led to a rising demand for healthy and nutritious horticultural products. There are also emerging mar-kets for Kenyan horticultural products in the region and globally. These trends provide opportunities for producers, other agribusinesses in horticulture va-lue chains as well as other stakeholders to better organize themselves to reap the benefits that the sector provides. It also provides an opportunity to move away from an informal market to more organized horticultural production.

The objective of all members is to en-hance the development and adoption of innovative technologies in the horti-culture sector.

AgriProFocus Kenya Network Plans

The AgriProFocus Kenya network has identified three key prio-rity areas for 2017: youth in agribusiness, horticulture and in-clusive & sustainable agribusiness. As a network, AgriProFocus will tap into the opportunities presented by these themes and sectors, with the goal of increasing the number of successful agribusiness models across the value chain.

Through linking, learning and leadership, AgriProFocus Kenya aims to ensure effective access to and use of a pool of know-ledge, resources and expertise and create space for members to deepen their scope of understanding through sharing and learning from each others experiences. This will translate to better collaborations and partnerships amongst the stakehol-ders, learning and sharing of best practices and innovations and collectively influencing the agenda on youth, inclusive agribusiness and the horticulture sector in Kenya.

Regional & Global Activities

The increasing commitments from private sector and govern-ments across AgriProFocus focus regions present immense op-portunities for more partnerships, collaborations and co-creati-on between the AgriProFocus country network members and non-member sector players. AgriProFocus Kenya members have identified a number of value chains and themes that presents opportunities for regional and global collaboration.

AgriProFocus Kenya sees an opportunity to do a regional youth in agribusiness conference that will provide a platform for net-work members and other partners to share experiences, learn and develop collaborations and partnerships across the coun-tries participating.

Besides this, our network would like to organise another regio-nal Extensive Livestock Expo in 2017.
