Dear Friends: We greet you with much to celebrate! We’ve been so busy looking ahead that our 30th birthday almost snuck up on us. It’s been a blink, and a lifetime, since Pam and Bill Bryan started Off the Beaten Path as a way to share their love for the Rocky Mountain West. At the risk of sounding sentimental (which we are), “sharing the love” has been the steady constant over the years as we expanded our travel territories, services, and—another thing to celebrate—our relationships. I’m thrilled to share the news that Off the Beaten Path and the National Parks Conservation Association have teamed up as official travel partners! OBP has been running NPCA trips for awhile now, but our new alliance allows a deeper collaboration that lets us offer unique opportunities for insider experiences. You’ll see it in this year’s journeys to destinations as different from each other as Acadia and American Samoa National Parks. This is an auspicious year to launch the partnership because of yet another milestone to celebrate: the National Park System turns 100 in 2016. For the centennial, NPS launched their Find Your Park program, which inspired our Find Your Path theme, a supportive call to seek out connection to far flung places. The timing couldn’t be more ripe to discover, explore, and support your parks! So let us light your way this year, whether your path takes you to a national park, down a solitary highway pulling a classic Airstream trailer, or into the workshop of a weaver in Peru. It’s all in celebration of this big, beautiful world and our good fortune to dwell in, immerse, and connect with it! Dear Friends: We greet you with much to celebrate! We’ve been so busy looking ahead that

our 30th birthday almost snuck up on us. It’s been a blink, and a lifetime, since

Pam and Bill Bryan started Off the Beaten Path as a way to share their love for

the Rocky Mountain West. At the risk of sounding sentimental (which we are),

“sharing the love” has been the steady constant over the years as we expanded

our travel territories, services, and—another thing to celebrate—our relationships.

I’m thrilled to share the news that Off the Beaten Path and the National Parks

Conservation Association have teamed up as official travel partners! OBP has been running NPCA trips for awhile now, but our new alliance allows

a deeper collaboration that lets us offer unique opportunities for insider

experiences. You’ll see it in this year’s journeys to destinations as different from

each other as Acadia and American Samoa National Parks. This is an auspicious

year to launch the partnership because of yet another milestone to celebrate: the

National Park System turns 100 in 2016. For the centennial, NPS launched their

Find Your Park program, which inspired our Find Your Path theme, a supportive

call to seek out connection to far flung places. The timing couldn’t be more ripe

to discover, explore, and support your parks! So let us light your way this year, whether your path takes you to a national park,

down a solitary highway pulling a classic Airstream trailer, or into the workshop of

a weaver in Peru. It’s all in celebration of this big, beautiful world and our good

In the hero’s journey of myths and fairy tales, an ordinary person ventures out from the everyday world into a territory of mysterious wonder. The traveler encounters fabulous forces and

returns changed by the experience.

We can’t help but think of the first time we stood under Delicate Arch, magically suspended between stony earth and endless sky. Or peered down from a plane into the volcanic crater of Alaska’s Mount Edgecombe, and loved the planet for its restlessness. Or watched a grizzly bear scoop moths from a rocky crevice, thunderstruck by what it takes to sustain a wild life.

In 2016, Off the Beaten Path will have been helping travelers like you—our intrepid heroes!—find their adventurous paths for thirty

years. That’s a boatload of fabulous forces and a groaning golden measure of experiences. We are humbled,

excited, and eternally grateful to reach this milestone in your good company.

Thirty! What an audacious age. Old enough to have developed a sense of direction in life, while still discovering unimagined possibilities and forging dynamic relationships. And wise enough to understand that relationships are more important than anything. Which is why we’re so proud to announce that Off the Beaten Path and the National Parks Conservation Association have “tied the knot” in an official travel partnership.

We’ve been working with NPCA for years, an alliance marked by mutual respect and a shared passion for national parks. By formally joining forces, we can now open even more doors to your national park experience to help you explore our most beguiling and noteworthy landscapes. Not only are natural monuments like

Yosemite and the Grand Canyon astonishing to see, it’s also extraordinary that we can hike, float, wander, and explore their quiet corners. That comes thanks to a century of heroic efforts to protect, preserve, and maintain our distinctly American legacy of public lands.

Happily, the love of wild places is a universal language, as evidenced in the proudly conserved rainforests of Costa Rica, the carefully managed visitation in the Galapagos Islands, and the fierce local commitment to healthy coral reefs in Palau. There are heroes everywhere you look. Just as there are journeys everywhere you turn—exciting, rewarding, fun, and even life-changing travel experiences. Let us help you find your way into the mysterious wonder of the wild world this year, off the beaten path.

More than just places to be seen, National Parks are experiences to be treasured. Thanks to America’s parklands, you can hike among giant sequoias in Sequoia & Kings Canyon

National Parks, and drink the rain at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. You can touch a dinosaur bone at Dinosaur National Monument, see the Milky Way free of light pollution at Joshua Tree National Park, and listen to the grasses rustle as you walk through the last

remnant of a vanishing ecosystem at Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve.

In 2016, the National Park System turns 100 years old. To celebrate, they’re kicking off a “Find Your Park” program to inspire us all to connect with, enjoy, and support America’s national parks. Off the Beaten Path’s partnership with the National Parks Conservation Association puts us in a wonderfully unique position to help you find your park! Our alliance creates opportunities and benefits to travelers not found elsewhere. For instance, NPCA regional offices have helped us craft trips that capture the historical essence and

current character of some of our most spectacular and important parklands. And NPCA program managers, researchers, and representatives will join a number of OBP Small Group Adventures throughout the year to offer their insiders’ perspective.

This is an auspicious year to add new national parks to your life list. Let us open doors to the parks for you this year, off the beaten path!

Dear Traveler, What better way to deepen a successful friendship than through an official

partnership, especially one that is forged through mutual love of our national

parks? As Cory mentioned in his Welcome Letter, National Parks Conservation

Association and Off the Beaten Path are celebrating this year by becoming travel

partners.

Friends of NPCA and Off the Beaten Path who have enjoyed an insider’s

experience in the parks for 30 years can now enjoy an even more meaningful

experience. As you flip through the following pages you can learn about

NPCA’s work to protect our national parks. This catalog offers some incredible

opportunities for you to experience these places yourself. As I can personally

attest, a park trip can truly be life changing. And if you are moved by visiting

America’s favorite places as much as we have been, I invite you to join us in

protecting them. NPCA’s centennial is just a few years away. We were established in 1919 by two

people who believed that the parks needed an independent voice outside of

government to speak up on their behalf. And that voice is still needed nearly 100

years later. As the Park Service encourages visitors to Find Your Park in this, their

own centennial year, we encourage you to also Find Your Voice and speak up on

behalf of America’s favorite places. Together we can have a lasting impact on our

parks, for ours and for future generations. See you in the parks,

Clark Bunting President and CEO National Parks Conservation Association

About National Parks Conservation Association

Since its founding in 1919, NPCA has been an independent, nonpartisan voice for America’s national parks. The organization’s members, staff, and volunteers are the storytellers, mobilizers, protectors, and advocates working to strengthen and protect our nation’s natural, historical, and cultural heritage. Join the movement at npca.org/join. Off the Beaten Path travelers receive a free one-year membership to NPCA with any small group or custom travel booking.

Our Partnership, Your Advantage

There are wins all around with the new Off the Beaten Path/National Parks Conservation Association partnership. For you as a traveler, it means— • A portion of your journey cost goes to support NPCA’s work and mission. • During your Small Group Adventure, you have insider’s access to the national parks. • You will receive special OBP-exclusive information from NPCA before, during, and after your trip. • NPCA representatives will be present on certain departures to provide additional insight and perspective.

Great

The

of

TravelWhat makes a great travel partner? The same things that make a great friend.

In 1986, Bill and Pam Bryan started Off the Beaten Path with a profoundly simple premise: We’re your friend out West. The Bryans had already been planning a plethora of trips for visiting friends and family. Some wanted to ride horses. Others wanted to hike. A few were interested in history and Western ghost towns. More than a few came with their fly rods. Nearly all of them wanted to go to Yellowstone and

see bears. (Wolves hadn’t been reintroduced yet.) The visitors also really hoped they could meet Pam and Bill’s friends and neighbors.

Because the Bryans genuinely wanted their guests to love the Rockies as much as they did, they took them riding and fishing, threw barbecues, mapped driving routes, made notes about the best cafes and dinosaur museums, and introduced them to friends and acquaintances in Fort Peck, Wisdom, Whitefish, and Plentywood. This is still pretty much how we do it. Every client is a friend we want to thrill to the core—only now we can share our favorite places from Alaska to the Pacific Islands. Bill and Pam have happily assumed “emeritus” status, with their friend and colleague Cory Lawrence now firmly in the Chief Friend role, with a confident hand on the reins.

What makes travel extraordinary?Unforgettable experiences.

Experience is at the heart of exceptional travel. Nice hotel rooms are terrific, but thread counts aren’t going to rock your world. Not like practicing your few words of Spanish while you color with your host’s chatty granddaughter in a remote mountain lodge in Peru. Or walking the rolling hills of the Little Bighorn Battlefield with a Crow Indian elder. Or the triumph of wading across a cold stream in New Zealand on your bucket-list Great Walk.

Behind your travel experience is our thirty years of planning experience. The most important thing we’ve learned over those decades is how to create a trip that’s logistically impeccable, yet open to spontaneity and spacious enough to let a traveler grab the brass ring of serendipity. We’ve learned how to plan for “six nights in three states” while still allowing the journey to have a life of its own. We think of it as the picnic factor—apples and cheese on the riverbank because it’s too beautiful to leave, and there’s a deer with a fawn, and the whole world is right here, right now.

Our heartfelt promise.

No other company will connect you to the nature and culture of your travel destinations the way we do. It’s more than a tagline when we say that an Off the Beaten Path journey is where the heart of the traveler meets the soul of the place. We use the full force of our thirty years—our accumulated expertise, local knowledge, and connections—to make sure you have the kind of trip your best friend would want you to have: spirited, fun, meaningful, warmly connected, and unforgettable. Let us help you find your way by heart this year, off the beaten path.

SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL

Think of a number between four and sixteen. Now count yourself–and you’re off: to Glacier Bay, Death Valley, Machu Picchu, or any number of other wild places, off the beaten path. Most OBP Small Group Adventures confirm with four travelers, and cap at sixteen. That’s an easy set of traveling companions in one or two vans. With such a small group size, you can travel unobtrusively and easily shift gears to take advantage of unexpected opportunities. Our guide-to-guest ratio sets an example for the industry, and might help explain the sense of comraderie and friendship that emerges on group trips. (It’s pretty neat the way that happens.)

SmallGROUP

TRIP PACE

Trip pace is listed in the details section of each Small Group Adventure. If you’re not sure which pace is best for you, call

a Travel Advisor to talk it through.

EASY1-2 miles a day, occasionally over

uneven terrain.

MODERATE3-6 miles a day over occasionally

uneven terrain, with additional outdoor activities like kayaking, rafting, or horseback riding.

STRENUOUSExpect some hikes of 5-12 miles over uneven terrain with notable elevation gain. Additional outdoor activities might be of a

longer duration.

Great guides - OFF THE BEATEN PATH

It’s impossible to overstate the value of traveling with an excellent guide. That’s why we work with the best. They’re an interesting and impassioned lot, our guides: wildlife biologists, naturalists, teachers, photographers, botanists, former rangers, geologists, authors—and consummate travelers, all. Regardless of their personal specialities, they know where wolves

are denning, when the bitterroot blooms, how geysers work, what the difference is between an arch

and a natural bridge, and why it’s really important for you to see an eagle. They’re fun, friendly, and genuinely

committed to your remarkable experience.

Unique experiences, local flavor

You might learn to handle a team of huskies from an Iditarod veteran, or take a sound bath in the Mojave Desert, or belly up to a cowboy bar, or meet your Navajo guide’s grandmother, or ride with gauchos. Our Custom Travel planners also design our group trips so there’s a definite custom flavor to the itineraries, especially in the quest for local flavor. You’ll rest well at the end of each fantastic day in rural inns, wilderness lodges, mountain cabins, beachfront bungalows, estancias, and historic hotels. And you’ll taste history, culture, and geography in planked salmon, black bean and butternut posole, ceviche and white corn, lavendar ice cream, Kona coffee, Malbec wine, and Angus steak.

Your days unfold easily, sometimes spontaneously, but always with a sense of direction and discovery. By journey’s end, you will know—really know—a new corner of the world.

The last best thing about Small Group Adventures

Off the Beaten Path small group trips make it easy to explore new places. We take care of all the planning, logistics, driving, and other endless details, so you can focus on the fun parts of travel. Peruse the Small Group Adventure descriptions on pages 16 through 69 and see what grabs you. Then give us a call. We can send you detailed trip brochures and answer any questions you might have. We’re excited about this year’s trips and can’t wait to share!

After six trips with you we can’t say enough

good things about Off the Beaten Path. We

recommend you to everyone we meet. We are

already thinking about the next trip. – Brad M.

Travel

CUSTOM

To create a memory, you need to be paying attention. To pay attention,

you have to be interested. To be interested, you must have been curious.

That, in a nutshell, is Off the Beaten Path Custom Travel.

Your personal interests, dreams, and desires are the heart and soul of your Custom Journey.

It starts in your mind: something you’ve always wanted to do, a place you promised yourself you’d go. We breathe life into your notions, bringing the plan to reality in ways and with details you couldn’t even have imagined. Based on what we come to know about you in conversations, we suggest (or don’t) things like whitewater rafting, canyoneering, birding, llama packing, and wolf tracking. We also identify the times and places where we believe a private naturalist or historian guide would turn a merely good day into a grand, fun, perspective-shifting experience.

We make the recommendations, you make the final choices. This is your trip, your way. When you’re satisfied with the plan, we make all the reservations and create your unique Journey Guidebook. This “road bible” has all your day-by-day information as well as ideas for side trips and tips on where to find the authentic flavor of a place—maybe in the form of a huckleberry milkshake or bison meatloaf.

Color Your World

Sometimes our custom travelers make novel requests that set us off on our own quests. We love that! There’s nothing more fun for us than saying—you bet, we can make that happen. Like

the family that asked if they could do watercolor paintings in Zion National Park. We contacted an artist we

know in Springdale who runs a small gift shop and asked her if she could help us out. She

found someone to watch the store and took the family to two places she felt would

inspire them. Together they wetted their brushes, swirled their paints, paid

attention to their surroundings, and created watercolor memories of that magical place on that special day. (Let’s see Siri and an iPhone do that!)

Enhance Your Life

We have another traveler-turned-friend we met in the 1980s, not too

long after Off the Beaten Path hung out its shingle. He and his son, who was

in middle school at the time, decided they wanted to learn how to fly-fish

together. We got them to the right guides on the right waters, with patient instruction

and comfortably paced days. They’re coming out again this summer, as they have nearly every

year. The son is launched now in his own career, but still makes time to go fishing with his dad. Dad, from his vantage

point, couldn’t be happier.

Travel bonds people to each other, even as it makes their worlds bigger in different ways. Let’s do this together!

The trip was fantastic—spectacular, awesome, perfect in every way. We

rang in the new year by zip-lining upside down in Queenstown. I think

this bodes well for a year filled with adventure! – Kate R.

We loved every stop, every activity, every guide. Each time we left a place

we said “nothing can top that,” and yet something did. – Susan H.

We’re your full partner in this endeavor. It’s fun—the happy brainstorming sessions and excitement as it all takes shape. In our book, travel isn’t a luxury the way infinity pools on the balcony are a luxury. Travel is an essential spirit-affirming ingredient in a well-rounded

life. Give us a call to hear about all the ways we can help you find your path this year. Let the adventure begin!

In the late 1920s, Wally Byam had a vision: a life of freedom on the open road in the great outdoors. Byam began manufacturing

Airstream trailers in 1931, and the rest is history.

Off the Beaten Path can custom-plan your journey route, complete with the best campsites. We will also suggest and plan fun

things to do over the course of your journey through the American Southwest, California, or the Rockies—

Cast AND mend, Drift and wade. Sometimes your path is a river. Casting a fly into clean water in a beautiful place sets you off on a very special journey.

Off the Beaten Path fly-fishing expeditions connect you. With fish, for sure. But also with the landscape you are immersed in and the

people who welcome you there. We’ll line you out on the finest spring creeks in the West, send you down classic

drifts on blue-ribbon rivers, get you way out there to fly-in/boat-in fishing camps, and hook you up with the

best guides and lodges from Alaska to Patagonia.

Besides access to private water and thirty years of angling intel, you get a terrific all-around travel experience. If you’d like, we’ll arrange off-the-water activities for you, like hiking and wildlife watching. We’re also more than happy to create a parallel itinerary for your non-angling companions. Everybody has a good time and goes home with a story, fish or otherwise.

There are as many different kinds of ranch experienceS as there are styles of cowboy hatS. You can stay on a working ranch where you ride fence and move livestock with the family. Or you can duck the chores and spend your days in total leisure at an amenity-rich guest ranch. In between those two gateposts are historic dude ranches and equestrian camps, rustic cabins and resort-style lodges, mountain and rangeland settings, and gourmet dinners and chuck wagon fare.

Sorting through the options can be daunting and a bit of a crap shoot. If you wanted to gamble you’d go to Vegas! We can remove the element of chance and luck, and get you to the right place for you. With Off the Beaten Path as your ranch matchmaker, no matter where you go you’ll find friendly faces, good horses, and a healthy dose of Western outdoors.

FAQs

Why are Small Group Adventure prices given as a range? As an incentive to book early, we offer our best prices to the first people to reserve. This allows us to lock in

guaranteed departures for the year. As a result, early bookers get the best deals, while late bookers still have a full complement of trips to choose from. The variation from lowest to highest price is generally $400.

Why is there a single supplement on Small Group Adventures? Hotel rooms are priced for double occupancy. Given that reality, we calculate trip price based on two

people per room in order to offer the most economical price to the largest segment of travelers. We know that can be aggravating to solo travelers, and we empathize. If other solo travelers on your trip express an

interest in room sharing, we can facilitate the conversation.

What is included in the price of my Small Group Adventure? The price covers essentially everything on the ground during your journey including your guides,

lodging, meals (except evenings on your own as indicated in your itinerary), planned activities, ground transportation, entrance fees, housekeeping gratuities, and airport transfers except as noted. You pay

for your own alcoholic beverages and optional activities like fishing or spa services. End-of-trip gratuities for your main guide are not included, and are at your discretion.

Is OBP Custom Travel expensive? The cost of your Custom Journey is ultimately up to you, based on how many days you want to travel, your

preferred lodging, and the activities you choose from our palette of suggestions. We strive to secure for you the best value possible, pulling all the strings we can and securing hard-to-get reservations at the most favorable rates. The best part of the deal is how much time and aggravation you save by not having to do all

the research, planning, and phone calling yourself!

Who’s there for me on my trip? We are! We’re with you in the flesh on your Small Group Adventure, and we’re with you in spirit (and by 24-

hour phone service) on your Custom Journey. Our Home Team shadows you all the way, ready to step in if you need us. We care about your trip as much as you do!
