CELEBRATE STANHOPE BEING THE “LEGENDAIRY CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA” ON NOVEMBER 12th.

From Stanhope to Liberia Kevin and Judy Sutton travelled to Liberia, in June this year, to visit their daughter Nikki, who is the Project Manager at the Liberia Renaissance Education Complex (LREC). This is a tuition-free public school, privately funded by the Swiss based Liberia Renaissance Foundation. The idea is that talented students can access a first-class education, no matter what their background. Liberia, located along the Western coast of Africa, is a very poor country and recently experienced the additional problems of an Ebola virus outbreak. Thankfully, this is now over. Conditions are overcrowded, jobs are scarce and housing is poor for much of the population, who generally don’t have access to electricity or running water. However, the bright colours, heat, torrential rain and the friendliness of the people left lasting impressions with both Kevin and Judy. Other lasting memories were of the students proudly singing the national anthem each morning and the singsong flow of English, as spoken by the Liberians. As volunteers, Kevin and Judy stayed in the guest house, which has running water, toilets and electricity supplied by a generator. Sleeping at night was greatly helped by the air-conditioning. They helped in the classroom and on building and construction projects. Kevin found it hard going at times, working in hot and humid conditions on building projects and repairs. He and Judy also spent time on intensive reading experiences with two students. Judy visited a variety of classes from Prep to Grade 9 and had lots of fun with the younger students. She found that kids are the same, no matter where you are. It was a very rewarding experience. If anyone would like to visit the school as a volunteer you can check out this web site www.goabroad.com/ and look for ‘Volunteer with Our School Liberia’. Nikki has been working at the school for the past 3 years. Together with the school community she is endeavouring to grow the school from the current Prep – Year 9 to Kindergarten-Year 12. To do that they need to build three new classrooms for the senior high, so that each grade level has their own learning space. She has organised a fundraising program called “Want to help Tete hate algebra?’ through You caring Compassionate Crowd funding. www.youcaring.com/ If you feel like donating, no donation is too big or too small. (Note donations are in US dollars).

Fonterra welcomes next step in global partnership

with Beingmate Fonterra Co-operative Group Limited welcomes the formal approval by the Board of Beingmate Baby and Child Food Company Ltd to establish a joint venture to purchase the Co-operative’s Darnum plant in Australia – another milestone in the companies’ global partnership. Chief Executive Theo Spierings said China is a key strategic market for Fonterra, and the global partnership with Beingmate provides significant growth potential for both companies. “The partnership will create a fully integrated global supply chain from the farm gate direct to China’s consumers, using Fonterra’s milk pools and manufacturing sites in New Zealand, Australia, and Europe. “By working with Beingmate, we are creating additional demand for ingredients and high-value paediatric and maternal nutrition products made from our New Zealand milk, complemented by milk drawn from other international milk pools. “The Beingmate Board’s approval is a further important step in our partnership. It is also

another milestone in our strategy to increase the volume and value of products we export to China. “The Australian joint venture will manufacture nutritional powders, including infant formula and other nutritional milk powders, at Darnum in Victoria, for Fonterra and Beingmate and other customers,” said Mr Spierings. Beingmate will own 51 per cent of the joint venture and Fonterra will retain a 49 per cent stake, and run the plant operation. “Our partnership with Beingmate is already strengthening the presence of our Anmum infant formula brand. Distribution through Beingmate is underway, with the first shipments landed in China in June. “Beingmate has an extensive distribution and sales network with significant growth potential and the company continues to pursue a leading position in the China infant formula market,” said Mr Spierings. The Beingmate Board’s approval of the joint venture will now be put to a vote of Beingmate shareholders at an EGM on November 16th. In August 2014, Fonterra and Beingmate announced that they intended to form a global partnership to help meet China’s growing demand for infant formula. In March this year Fonterra acquired 18.8 per cent of Beingmate.

Rushworth saves Stanhope from Dust Problem

It would appear Stanhope has been spared the problem of extensive dust problems within the town, following actions of irate Rushworth residents. A number of Rushworth streets were upgraded by having white, Mt Scobie gravel spread along the edges of the streets causing great clouds of dust to penetrate homes, cause problems with solar panels, as well as causing health problems for older residents and those with breathing problems. It is believed both Stanhope and Kyabram streets were to receive similar treatment, but swift action by local residents and councillor Adrian Weston halted the proposed upgrade until it is further discussed by council. Public Meeting A public meeting is to be held at the Rushworth Shire Hall to discuss this matter and the actions of the Council on Thursday November 5th at 7.30 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Girgarre-Stanhope Rail Trail Opening

Friday the 6th November at 11.30 am the first two stages of the Rail Trail will be officially opened. All members of the Community are invited to attend the ceremony on the platform of the old railway station and this will be followed by a light lunch in the Memorial Hall. A dedicated band of Committee Members and community volunteers have generously given their time and expertise along with providing much needed equipment to complete a range of tasks. This group of volunteers has been supported once a month by a Department of Justice work team to assist with the maintenance of the Reserve and Trail and have worked under the very capable direction of John Warde. The project has also received generous donations from local families and businesses in the form of cash and materials to assist with the restoration of the Ganger’s shed, and the pathway. Thank you to everyone for this support which has greatly assisted the completion of the two stages. The restoration of the shed and the railway platform now provide an interesting and historical focus point in the Reserve which is officially known as Progress Park. It is envisaged that this pathway will also compliment the highly anticipated Gargarro Botanical Garden.

Wim Rosenberg Stephen, Mica and Blake, together with Dorothy, Sonja, Peter and John and their families would like to thank

relatives and friends in the local community for their kind thoughts, cards, expressions of sympathy and support

following Wim’s passing.

Final Top Ten Stanhope

Footballers The final instalment in Stanhope’s top ten footballers instigated by local legend “Yabby” Nelson concludes with a few very brave locals putting pen to paper and putting forward their list of what they believe to be the top ten footballers, they have seen pull on the maroon & gold jumper. A special thanks to those who have come forward with a list and after much consideration it has been decided to keep the names of the submissions anonymous, and once again a big thanks to “Yabby” for making this piece of history happen.

CELEBRATE STANHOPE BEING THE “LEGENDAIRY CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA” ON NOVEMBER 12th.

Steven’s Antics Aren’t we famous?

Yep , it’s marvellous that this home town of mine is really on the map,

as LEGENDAIRY capital of Australia.

You know I’m as much a member of this community as anyone else, cos I help to make Stanhope well known. I know cos when people visit here they say “Where’s that famous cockatoo, Steven ” ? Anyhow, I hear there is to be a big day up at the footy ground on Thursday the 12th and EVERYONE is invited. If that’s so, then I must be invited. I don’t care if I’m not, you just watch, I’m definitely going this time, not like when all those people were at the new fire station and I didn’t get an invite. I’m still upset about that. I’m going to be at the footy ground on the 12th starting at 11 o’clock, no matter what, so keep your eye out for me. You know, I don’t usually like big crowds, but this day is different, I wouldn’t miss it for quids. Everyone will be celebrating and there will be some very important people there, so I’ll just have to be there. I just hope someone will remember to bring along some food for me. I’m sure there will be plenty of food for everyone and lots of other goodies as well. If you want a hint, then I’m very fond of sunflower seeds – I’m not supposed to eat them, but who cares, this will be a big day, so don’t miss it - be there. The photo is not the best, but you get the picture, there I am sitting on the flagpole with the Legendairy Flag.

Local Gardens on Display A number of gardens in the Stanhope, Rushworth and Girgarre areas were open for viewing over the weekend

of 24/25th of October.

The “Bonshaw" Homestead near Stanhope

On Saturday 24th gardens at Corop, Stanhope and Rushworth were open and were visited by numerous locals and visitors to the area. A highlight was the chance to see the development of a beautiful garden at “Bonshaw” near Stanhope. Bernie Ryan who recently purchased Bonshaw has done a marvellous job with the garden and surrounds, which were appreciated by those who had the opportunity to visit this property for the first time. Another garden of interest, not seen by many in the past, was that of the Furphy family “Sandhills” near Corop. This garden featured a huge expanse of lawn, together with some rather historic trees and a number of water features. Other gardens, in and close to Rushworth, were also of great interest to those who visited them because of the variation between the gardens on display. On Sunday gardens around Stanhope and Girgarre were open for inspection. “Bonshaw” at Stanhope was again open. Another large garden was that of Val and Keith Maudsley. The gardens of Avis Weller and Robyna Varcoe at Girgarre were also open. All deserved high praise.
