Pronouns – Basic Definition Pronoun- A word used in place of one
or more nouns or pronouns. Ex: When Mrs. Frantz came into
class, she was holding the biggest cup of hot chocolate I have ever seen.
Ex: The driveway and sidewalks are covered with snow; they should be shoveled.

Pronoun Cont. Antecedent- The word or word group that a
pronoun stands FOR. Ex: The dog lost his collar.
DOG is the antecedent of his. Ex: Ashlyn, call your mother.
Ashlyn is the antecedent of your.
![Page 5: Main Idea & Supporting Details Unit 6 th Grade Language Arts Mrs. Frantz.](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062516/56649e5e5503460f94b57947/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Pronoun Cont. Sometimes the antecedent is not stated
because the reader can understand the meaning of the sentence without it. For example: “Call your mother.”
![Page 6: Main Idea & Supporting Details Unit 6 th Grade Language Arts Mrs. Frantz.](https://reader035.fdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062516/56649e5e5503460f94b57947/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Pronoun Cont. Pronouns must agree with the antecedent in
number and gender. Marie and Collin took their chairs with them
to the game. There are two antecedents, so the
pronoun must be plural Ex: Janessa was wearing her coat at the
mall. Janessa is a girl, so the pronoun must be
feminine.
