Based on Frantz Fanon’s thinking, our practice and research want to:

1.Place culture, belonging and subjects into the stream of History and Conflict;2.Critically analyse genealogy and archaeology of psychiatric diagnostic categories;3.Construct therapeutic strategies anchored to specific idioms of suffering;4.Interrogate forms of political subjectivation in postcolonial context.

Clinical activitiesFrantz Fanon Centre was the first ethno-psychiatric service established in Italy within the Public Health Service and with the specific aim of making available psychotherapy and psychologicalsupport to migrants, refugees and victims of torture. Actually it works thanks to an agreement with the Mental Health Department.

Since the beginning of its activities, psychotherapy and supportgroups were realized with the collaboration of so-called “cultural mediators”, whose basic skills have been implemented by a specific training in psychological and anthropological domain. “Cultural mediators“ (coming from Morocco, Romania, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Jordan, Somali, Ethiopia, India, Colombia) work in the Centre for 4 to 16 hours per week.

Clinical activitiesFrantz Fanon Centre is open 3 days per week (for 16 hours).

In these last years the Centre took in charge above 1500 out-patients (included families and couples). Most of them were affected by serious psychiatric disorders and severe forms of suffering. Their treatment and recovery have been made possible thanks to close cooperation with mental health services spread in the territory.

The team is multi-disciplinary and multi-professional (psychiatrists, psychotherapists, psychologists, cultural mediators, anthropologists, social workers). Its activity is funded and supported by national and international Institutions.

Frantz Fanon Association will coordinate WP7: innovative protocols for building and training inter-professional and intercultural teams working in the healthcare services for migrants (focus on mental health and women).

Its goal is to recognize different skills that the cultural and therapeutic mediators need to have or to improve during the practised activities.

Frantz Fanon Association will propose, analyse and discuss with all partners the following issues:
