The Art Gallery boasts Victorian master work and stunning paintings by L S Lowry. Art work and artefacts

adults!
Our Winter Gardens are flourished with tropical plants and flowers; the beautiful gardens stimulate the
senses as you walk through the glazed centre. A magnificent showcase of over 2,000 plants and flowers
illustrate the world’s natural beauty.
Exhibitions are open for visits including temporary exhibitions which are accompanied with different activities
for all age genres.
Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens is managed by Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums on behalf of
Sunderland City Council.

Our History
Originally the Sunderland Museum was ran privately however in 1846 this all changed and the museum
became the first museum in the county to be publicly owned outside London.
The museum was very popular and attracted so much that it out grew its size and so another museum,
library and Winter Gardens was built. During the 1940s this was destroyed as the glass was shattered due
to a German parachute mine landing nearby the Mowbray Park.
In the 1960s an extension to the museum was built due to the increasing growth of the museum. The
Sunderland Museum that was created was classed as one of the largest municipal museums in the
country.
Recently, the Library moved to a different location out of the building and the Museum benefited from a
large Heritage Lottery funded development scheme which was completed in July 2001.
The building was transformed and became very accessible, improved facilities with a new entrance and
Winter Garden.
Within the first three months after opening, an outstanding sum of over 300,000 people visited the
Museum & Winter Gardens. More recently Mowbray Park has been restored which is an added
attraction.

There are a number of private hotels
and bed and breakfasts in the city
centre and on the outskirts. However;
the cheapest option would be to book
a stay in the very local Travelodge.
This accommodation is very basic but
you get what you pay for; it is in the
city centre, just a short walking
distance away from Sunderland
Museum & Winter Gardens. An
alternative could be also to book a
night in the local Premier Inn
however, this is not in the city centre
so a short taxi or bus journey would
be necessary. Both options would be
ideal for a short stay and are very
good value for money. 7777
