4 Cases of Nouns

Nominative case Genitive case Accusative case

5 A noun preceded by a preposition is said to be in the genitive case (i.e the prepositions change the noun from nominative case to genitive case)

Possessive phrase

A possessive phrase has two parts. The first one is called the

and the second (a noun which is added to another noun) مظاف

one is called the مظاف الیہ (a noun to which the first noun is

added)

In English we use usually apostrophe to make possessive phrase

but in Arabic we make it by omitting the tanween of مظاف

and changing the مظاف الیہ from nominative case to genitive

case

Demonstrative phrase

If the noun which comes after the demonstrative pronoun اظم

is attached with definite article اشاسۃ then it is called in Arabic ال

and this construction is called the “ demonstrative اإلاشاس الیہ

phrase”

اإلاشکب ؤلاشاسي

In Arabic Demonstrative phrase اإلاشکب ؤلاشاسي is not a complete

sentence. To make it complete we must add predicate with it.

Adjectival phrase

In Arabic the adjective is called the صفت/وػت and the noun it

qualifies is called اإلاىػوت / اإلاوصوف . This construction is called

the adjectival phrase اإلاشکب الوصفي . In Arabic adjective comes

after the qualified noun.

In Arabic the adjective is in agreement with the qualified noun in the four matters i.e

1. Gender(masculine/feminine) 2. Number(singular/dual/plural) 3. Kind(definite/indefinite) 4. Case(nominative/genitive/accusative)

Sound plural/ الجمع السالم

The plural in which the singular retains its original form. Like in English boys, girls etc. and in

Arabic معلمون، معلمات. The sound

plural is divided into two parts. There are some special rules for making this type of plural.

Broken plural/ الجمع المکسر

The plural in which the original form of singular gets changed. Like in English men, women

and in Arabic سحال، وعاء . Broken

plural has lot of patterns but there is no any particular rule to make it.

Feminine sound plural/جمع المؤنث السالم

The plural in which we add ات

with its singular. Like in معلمۃ

،صالحۃ صالحات معلمات ، مامىۃ مامىات

Masculine Sound plural/ جمع المذکر السالم

The plural in which we add ون or

معلم with its singular like in ین

صالح صالحون، معلمون، مام مامىون

1 In Arabic counting is called غذد and the thing which is

counted is called مػذود

From 1-2 غذد is used as adjective and مػذود is its

qualified noun

From 3-10غذد is used as مظافandمػذود is used as مظاف

From 3-10 if مػذود is a masculine thenغذد will be used as

feminine i.e. with” Taa tanees”. And vise versa i.e. if غذد is a

feminine then مػذود will be used as masculine i.e. without

“Taa tanees”. Like جلجۃ طلب، جلث طالبات

Most of the nouns and adjectives have a “Tanween” at their end. But there are some cases of nouns and adjective which do not accept “Tanween” and in genitive case these nouns and adjectives accept “Fatha” in place of “Kasra”. These nouns and

adjectives are called ’’ألاظماء غحر مىصشفۃ‘‘ ( dip totes/the

indeclinable nouns) Some cases of indeclinable nouns are:-

Feminine proper nouns like ، خذیجۃ

غائشۃ

Masculine proper nouns ending with “Taa Tanees” like

، مػاویۃ

حمضۃ

Proper nouns and adjectives ending with ‘نا‘ like سفیبن ،

غثمان ، غطشان

Nouns and adjectives on the pattern of verb as on أفعل

Pattern like ؤحمذ ، ؤکبر ، ؤظود

Non Arabic proper nouns like ببشاھیم ، بسحاق ، لىذن

الحسوف املضبھۃ بالفػل/أقسام الجملۃ

There are two types of sentences in Arabic : Nominal sentence: Every sentence which begins with

noun. Like الکتاب حمیل

Verbal sentence: Every sentence which begins with

verb. Like رھب دمحم الی الذکان

The particle and it’s sisters are used at the بن

beginning of nominal sentence which we call in Arabic

these are . بن و ؤخواتھا ، ، لیت ، لػل بن . ؤن ، کإن ، لک

بن و ؤخواتھا.change the from nominative case to مبتذؤ

accusative case and after the introduction of بن ۔ مبتذؤ is

called اظم بن . and :Like خبر بن is called خبر

الکتاب حمیل ۔ بں الکتاب حمیل

مشیع۔ لػل حامذا مشیع حامذ

And in this chapter we have to learn only the particle

and بن لػل so بن means “ verily “ and “ used for لػل

hope or fear “

الی غضسی قواغد الػدد واملػدود

The numbers from 11 to 19 are compound of two parts.

In 11 and 12 both parts of (غذد) are agree with the

، اثنب عشر طبلبب، اثنتب عشرۃ طبلبۃطالبۃؤحذ غشش طالبا، بحذی غششۃ :like (مػذود)

From 13 to 19 the second part of (غذد) agrees with the

:while as the first part does not agree with it . like (مػذود)

ثالثۃ عشر طبلبب، ثالث عشرۃ طبلبۃ، تسعۃ عشر طبلبب، تسع عشرۃ طبلبۃ

From 11 to 19 both parts of (غذد) are considered as ( مبنی

(اجىان و اجيتان) except the two words (غلی الفتح

The numbers 20, 30…………. 90, are called ( غلود ).

These numbers are also same for masculine and

feminine. Like : ،غششون طالبا، غششون طالبۃ

The (مػذود) from 11 to 99 are always considered as

singular and in accusative case ( مفشد مىصوب )

أجصاء الجملۃ الفػلیۃ

The verbal sentence is made up of two parts verb and Subject and sometimes object also. In verbal sentence

subject is called (فاغل) and the object is called (مفػول بہ)

The subject (فاغل) said to be in nominative case(مشفوع) and the

object in accusative case ( مىصوب ). Like: كتل الولذ الحیۃ

If subject comes after a verb and has a full noun(اظم ظاھش) then

the verb remains singular whether the subject will be singular,

dual or plural. Like : رھب الطالب ، رھب الطالبان، رھب الطلب

Translation of Lesson 6

Mother O my son! When did you return from the school?

Saieed I returned before half an hour.

Mother Where is your sister Maryam. Didn’t she return?

Saieed I don’t know I didn’t see her.

Mother What did you learn today?

Saieed I learnt today a new chapter in Fiqah.

Mother Did you understand that?

Saieed Yes I understood that nicely.

Mother Did you not learn the noble Quran?

Saieed Why not, I learnt surah Rahman and I memorized it. Then got pleased with me and said: “ you are the best student in the class “

Mother ما شاء ہللا O my son! May Almighty Allah increase your knowledge.

Saieed O my mother! Did you wash my shirts?

Mother Yes I washed those and I branded those. Take this shirt.

Saieed My mother! Give me that one. That is more beautiful than this.

MARYAM ENTERS

Maryam السالم علیکم O my mother! How are you? And my brother! How are you?

Mother و علیکم السالم welcome my daughter. When did you leave from the school?

Maryam I left after noon prayer.

Maryam After the prayer I did not see them.

Mother O my daughter! Your brother has memorized the Surah Rahman. Which Surah you did memorize?

Maryam I memorized the Surah Hadeed and that is larger than the Surah Rahman. And I also memorized the ten verses from Surah Naba.

Mother ماشاء ہللا verily you are a laborious student. I am very glad with you. Did you go to library today?

Maryam Yes I went.

Mother What did you learn there?

Maryam I learnt the magazine from Pakistan its name is “ The Islam “

Mother Is that in Arabic language?

Maryam No that is in English language.

Mother Did you go to principal(female)

Maryam No, she didn’t come today.

Mother Why?

Maryam I think she went to Makkah.

Mother Did you drink the tea?

Maryam No I didn’t drink.

Mother (towards servant) O laila! Take the tea.

Maryam O laila! Take a piece of bread also. I am hungry.

Father Did you hear the news from the radio today?

Sons Yes we heard.

Father From which station you heard?

Sons We heard from three stations, station of Riyadh, station of Cairo and station of London.

Father I heard that the principal is sick and he is in hospital. Is this right.

Sons Yes this is right may Allah cure him

Father آمین when did he enter the hospital?

Sons He entered before three days.

Father Where is the red covered book which was in my room? Did you see it?

Yousuf I took this last night and I learnt it’s half.

Father And where is the magazine which was below that book

The particle کان and it’s sisters are used at the

beginning of nominal sentence which we call in Arabic

و ؤخواتھا کان .change the الخبر from nominative case to

accusative case and after the introduction of کان۔مبتذا is

called and . کاناظم :Like کانخبر is called خبر

اإلاذسط واكف، کان اإلاذسط واكفا

االولذ حالغ ، کان الولذ حالع

But if the predicate(الخبر) is clause no change takes place in it after the introduction of (کبن) like:

اإلاذسط في الفصل، کان اإلاذسط في الفصل

Translation of Lesson 9

The teacher entered the class and he found only the 15 students in it. Then he said to them: where are the five new students who came yesterday. Abdullah replied: they attended today but they left before some time, I think they went to the principal. After some time five students returned. Then the teacher said to them: O my sons did you go to the principal? They said: yes we went to him because we didn’t find our names in the registry. Than the teacher sat and said: O my sons did you learn the yesterday’s chapter? The students replied: yes we learnt it and wrote it and memorized it. The teacher said: Did you understand it? They said: Yes we understood it nicely. How easy this lesson is! Abdul Rahman said: three words I didn’t understand in it. The teacher said: what are these. Abdul Rahman replied: We learnt from the chapter this sentence “ خرطومعاد جدي من ال so what do these three words mean? The teacher replied: عاد means “ He returned” and الجد means “ father of father or father of mother” and الخرطوم is the capital of Sudan. Did you understand? Abdul Rahman said: Now I understood. Than the teacher opened his book and learnt the new chapter. “ Almighty Allah created the sun, the moon, the stars , the earth and the seas, and he created everything. And he created the human beings from the Clay. Then the teacher stood up and wrote this chapter on the board. Muhammad raised his hand and said: O teacher! What is the meaning of الطین the teacher replied: الطین means “ The soil which is mixed with water”. And Faisal raised his hand. Then the teacher said to him: O Faisal! Have you any question? Faisal said: Yes, I have a question. Is the word بحار the plural of بحر the teacher replied: Yes. Hassan stood up and said: O teacher! what is the plural of السماء ?

Teacher O Abdul Rahman! Who created the moon?

Teacher What is that?

Yaqoob I learnt from any book that the stars are more distant than sun. is this right?

Teacher Yes this is right. O Usman from which Allah created the humans

Usman Allah created the humans from clay.

Abu Bakar Allah created the jinns from fire.

Teacher Well done o Abu Bakar. O Abdullah! How many heavens Almighty Allah has created?

Abdullah Almighty Allah created the 7 heavens.

Teacher O Abdul Rahman! In How many days Almighty has Allah created the heavens and earth.

Abdul Rahman Allah created the heavens and earth in six days.

Teacher This is right. Almighty Allah said in many verses. That he has created the seven heavens. As he said in Surah Talaq: Allah is the one who created the 7 heavens. And similarly he said in many verses that he has created the heavens and the earth in six days. As he said in Surah Alhadeed: He is the one who created the heavens and the earth In six days.

After the dawn prayer Zakariya went to visit the Hamid but he didn’t find him in the house. Then he said to his son Musa: Where is your father?

Musa He went to the market.

Zakariya Does he go to the market every day.

Musa Yes, he goes constantly to the market after the dawn prayer.

Zakariya When does he return from the market?

Musa He returns at 7 o clock and sometimes 8 o clock.

Zakariya What does he do at home?

Musa He reads the newspaper and hears the news from the radio.

Zakariya When does he go to the factory?

Musa He goes at half past nine.

Zakariya And when does he return from there?

Musa He returns at half past one or 2 o clock

Zakariya Does he go again to the factory after the noon prayer?

Musa No he does not go after the noon prayer. He sits here in his office after Asr prayer.

Zakariya How many workers work in your factory?

Musa Our factory is not big. There are 125 workers and 2 engineers work in it.

Zakariya The time is quarter to nine right now, and your father didn’t return.

Musa Maybe today he will return late.
