Manuel Velázquez CabreraTras unos meses en Uruguay regresa a Canarias, donde

permanece durante cinco años en su pueblo natal. Ingresa

en el Seminario Diocesano de Las Palmas y, tras cursar cin-

co años en él, consigue el Bachillerato en el Instituto de la

Laguna para terminar haciendo Derecho en Madrid.

Pronto empieza a ejercer de abogado en Las Palmas de

Gran Canaria, y entre 1896 y 1900 fue representante de

Fuerteventura en la Diputación Provincial. Durante este

periodo contrae matrimonio con Carmen García, con la

que tendrá siete hijos.

Después de una etapa de menos dedicación a la vida pú-

blica activa, en 1910, toma la iniciativa del Plebiscito de

las Islas menores a las Cortes de la Nación. El Plebiscito fue

una actuación política original, única en toda la historia

política del Archipiélago. Fue una iniciativa audaz, valiente

y lúcida. Recogió 3.428 firmas entre las islas de Fuerte-

ventura, Lanzarote, Hierro y Gomera, y viajando perso-

nalmente a Barcelona y Madrid, logró que sus propuestas

fueran debatidas por las Cortes españolas.

Este documento, elaborado por Velázquez, debatido y

promovido por él, tuvo una influencia determinante, junto

a otros factores, en la creación de los Cabildos Insulares

—por la Ley de Canalejas de 11 de julio de 1912— y en

el logro de que las islas periféricas tuvieran representantes

propios en el Congreso de los Diputados.

Cuando, en la primera década del siglo XX, se debatía en

el Estado español el problema canario, Velázquez logró

que las Islas periféricas expresaran su voz y participaran

activamente en la búsqueda de soluciones, superando la

polarización que siempre han ejercido las dos islas centra-

les, Tenerife y Gran Canaria. La intervención de las islas

secundarias en la política canaria fue tan fundamental que

marcó una nueva etapa en las relaciones interinsulares y

contribuyó a explorar nuevos caminos de justicia y de soli-

daridad entre las islas.

Manuel Velázquez murió el 19 de diciembre de 1916, a los

53 años, en una habitación del Hotel Universal de Madrid.

Sus restos descansan en la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran

Canaria.

El trabajo incansable de Velázquez sólo vino a dar frutos

pasados muchos años de su muerte, cuando en la De-

mocracia y, sobre todo, con el Estatuto de Autonomía de

1982, las islas periféricas empiezan a ver reconocidos sus

derechos y escuchadas sus reivindicaciones. Tal vez nadie

como él ha defendido la realidad de la Isla como elemento

configurador y como dato, a tener en cuenta de manera

ineludible, en la organización político-administrativa del

Archipiélago Canario.

Su forma peculiar de participar en política, no desde los

partidos políticos de entonces, sino desde la convicción del

poder de la Sociedad Civil, con la recogida de firmas y la

expresión libre y visionaria de los ideales autonomistas, en

tiempos de centralismo y caciquismo, le hacen precursor

de otra forma de hacer política, tal como se demanda hoy

desde muchas instancias sociales.

En este año 2012, cuando se cumple el Centenario de

su creación, los Cabildos Insulares han demostrado ser

un pilar básico en el proceso de la construcción histórica

canaria. Velázquez contribuyó de manera decisiva al re-

conocimiento del hecho insular y al surgimiento de estas

originales instituciones isleñas. Esto le acredita como uno

de los padres de la Nacionalidad Canaria.

Manuel Velázquez Cabrera nació en el pueblo de Tiscamanita,

Fuerteventura, el 11 de noviembre de 1863. Cuando tenía sólo

3 años, su madre falleció y quedó al único cuidado de su padre,

un próspero comerciante que se enriqueció con el negocio de

la cochinilla. Manuel pasó su infancia asistiendo a las escuelas

unitarias de Tuineje, Pájara y Antigua, hasta que en 1875 su

padre entró en conflicto con la justicia y tuvo que emigrar a

Uruguay, desde donde contacta con Manuel y con su hermano

Sebastián —de 12 y 17 años por aquel entonces— para que

vayan con él a vivir a Uruguay. Al llegar los dos muchachos a

Montevideo, les sorprende la noticia de que su padre había

fallecido, varias semanas antes, de manera inesperada.

Manuel Velázquez Cabrera was born in the village of

Tiscamanita, Fuerteventura, the 11th of November, 1863.

His mother died when he was 3 years old, his father being

the only one looking after him, a thriving merchant who

became rich with the cochineal business. Manuel spent his

childhood attending one-room schoolhouses in Tuineje,

Pájara and Antigua until 1875, when his father came into

conflict with the law and had to emigrate to Uruguay,

from where he contacts Manuel and his brother Sebastián

— who were 12 and 17 years respectively by then— so

they moved to Uruguay. When the two boys arrived in

Montevideo they were surprised by some news: their

father had unexpectedly died some weeks before.

solutions, overtaking the predominance of the two central

islands, Tenerife and Gran Canaria. The intervention of these

secondary islands in the Canarian Policy was so essential

that it marked a new stage in the inter-island relationships,

and this contributed to explore new paths of justice and

solidarity among the islands.

Manuel Velázquez died on the 19th of December, 1916,

at the age of 53, in a room of the Hotel Universal de

Madrid. His remains rest in the city of Las Palmas de Gran

Canaria.

His indefatigable work bore fruit only many years after he had

died, when in the Democracy and, mainly in the Estatuto de

Autonomía from 1982 the peripheral islands started to have

their rights recognized and their claims listened to. Maybe

nobody has defended, as he did, the reality of the Island as a

configuration element and as something to unavoidably bear

in mind when it comes to the political and administrative

organization of the Canarian Archipelago.

His peculiar way of participating in the policy, not from

the political parties of those times but from the conviction

of the Civil Social power, the collection of signatures and

the visionary free expression of the autonomic ideals,

in times of centralism and chieftainship, make of him

a precursor of another way of making policy, such as

the one that nowadays is being required by many social

authorities.

In this year, 2012, when the centenary of the inter-island

councils is being celebrated they have proved to be

the main support in the development of the Canarian

history. Velázquez contributed in a decisive way to the

recognition of the islands and to the creation of these

island institutions. This confirms him as one of the fathers

of the Canarian Nationality.

After some months in Uruguay he returns to the Canary

Islands, where he stayed for five years in his home village.

He enters the Diocesan Seminary in Las Palmas, and after

studying there for five years he enters the high school in La

Laguna, to end up studying Law in Madrid.

He soon starts to practise Law in Las Palmas de Gran

Canaria, and he was a representative of Fuerteventura

in the Diputación Provincial (like a County Council) from

1896 to 1900. In this period he marries Carmen García,

whith whom she will have seven children.

For some years he was a bit retired from the active public

life, but in 1910 he undertook the Plebiscite of the minor

islands to the Parliament. This Plebiscite was an original

political action, unique in the whole political history of

the Archipelago. It was a brave and courageous initiative.

He gathered 3.428 signatures among Fuerteventura,

Lanzarote, Hierro and Gomera, and

travelling to Barcelona and Madrid he

managed to have his proposals discussed

in the Spanish Parliament.

This document, written by Velázquez,

discussed and promoted by himself, had

a decisive influence, together with other

factors, in the creation of the inter-island

councils — by the Law of Canalejas from

the 11th of July, 1912— and in getting

representation for the peripheral islands in

Es difícil encontrar a jóvenes windsurfistas en

estas latitudes. Aún así, éste es el caso de

Shannon, un chico de 19 años que intenta ha-

cerse un hueco entre la élite de este exigente

deporte en Fuerteventura.

Vino a la Isla desde Dundolk, en su Irlanda natal, cuando

tenía 8 años y su familia decidió afincarse en Morro Jable.

Su cuerpo estaba todavía salado del mar y el viento del

Norte del Atlántico, donde practicaba optimist, afición

con la que continuó aquí hasta que, con 12 años y debido

al parón estival de la escuela municipal de vela, su madre

se informó sobre los cursos de windsurf que se impartían

en Risco del Paso y no dudó en inscribirlo.

Una vez se subió a la tabla de wind y vio la velocidad que

se podía coger ya nunca más volvió a practicar optimist.

Estuvo todo el verano soñando con el nuevo deporte, y

esta motivación no le pasó desapercibida a Oliver Trujillo

—organizador del curso— que, después de terminadas

las clases y al ver a aquel niño con los ojos brillantes y

suplicantes, se lo llevaba a la playa cuando podía.

Ahí empezó la odisea de conseguir material, el transpor-

te y todo lo demás que engloba el wind, un deporte en

el que sin ayudas es muy complicado iniciarse. Por este

motivo Shannon está realmente agradecido a sus patro-

cinadores, que le permiten practicar los deportes que le

apasionan. Y decimos deportes porque al mismo tiempo

que daba sus primeros pasos con la vela también comen-

zó a tirarse con la tabla de surf en la ola de La Cruz Roja,

justo delante de su casa, donde descubrió su otra gran

pasión.

Ahora Oliver se lo llevaba, no sólo a darle caña al viento

sino también a reventar las olas, pues Shannon era un

motivado y no se echaba atrás cuando entraba al agua

con condiciones duras; y tampoco le temblaba el pulso

cuando alguna mañana se despedía de su padre, al ir

para clase, y acababa dejando la moto aparcada en casa

SHANNONde Oliver, para surfear en La Punta, llegando a clase 2 ho-

ras tarde con la excusa de haberse quedado dormido.

Por fin acabó el instituto y este año ha empezado la uni-

versidad en Gran Canaria, lo que le permite hacer wind

en la meca canaria del viento —Pozo Izquierdo— y sur-

fear por nuevos spots.

Le da mucha pena el abandono que sufren tanto el surf

como el wind por parte de Cabildos y Ayuntamientos,

dejando como única opción para aprender las escuelas

privadas, que aún por encima están orientadas para los

turistas y en muchas de ellas no hablan ni castellano.

Tampoco existen guarda-tablas cerca de los spots —cosa

muy práctica para guardar el material y no tener que estar

cargando con él continuamente de casa a la playa—, y no

sería mala idea que se crease algún tipo de trasporte para

que los chiquillos pudiesen desplazarse a surfear, ya que

no todos los padres están dispuestos a meterse por los

caminos de La Punta y un equipo de wind tampoco entra

fácilmente en todos los coches. Shannon piensa que por

este motivo la juventud de la Isla está muy alejada de

estos deportes; tanto, que mucha gente sólo relaciona el

wind con la carpa que montan durante el Campeonato

del Mundo, y es triste que, tras 25 años de celebración,

sean anecdóticas las participaciones de majoreros, y más

con las condiciones que hay en esta Isla para la formación

de nuevos riders.

Entre los deseos de Shannon está el volver a participar,

como el pasado año, en el Fuerteventura Wave Classic,

que se celebrará a finales del mes de marzo en las costas

del norte de nuestra Isla.

Shannon, esperamos que tu ejemplo sea un precedente

y podamos ver, en unos años, una nueva generación de

surfistas y windsurfistas con acento majorero.

Esperamos que llegue el llamamiento que desde aquí y

contigo hacemos a las instituciones pertinentes para que

casos como el tuyo sean la norma y no la excepción.

t’s difficult to find young windsurfers in this Island

of ours. Even so, this is the case of Shannon, a nine-

teen-year-old young man who is trying to carve out

a place for himself among the top ranked sportsmen

of this demanding sport in Fuerteventura.

He came to our Island from his native Ireland when he

was 8, and his family decided to settle down in Morro de

Jable. His body had the salt and wind from the Northern

Atlantic still attached to it; there he had been practising

optimist, a hobby he went on practising here until he was

12. Then, because of the summer break of the municipal

sail school, his mother got some information about

windsurfing courses that were being taught in Risco del

Paso, and she didn’t hesitate to enrol him.

Once he tried a windsurf board and realised the speed

you could reach he didn’t practise optimist anymore. He

spent the whole summer dreaming of the new sport, and

this enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed for Oliver Trujillo

—the course organizer— , who once the lessons were

over and noticing the boy’s glittering eyes, eager to learn,

took him to the beach whenever he had the chance.

Then the nightmare of how to get the equipment, means

of transport and everything else started, as windsurf is

a difficult sport to get initiated in without any kind of

support. For this reason Shannon is really grateful to

his sponsors, who make it possible for him to practise

the sports he loves. And we have said «sports» in plural

because while he was starting out in Wind he was also

starting out in Surf in «La Cruz Roja», just in front of his

house, where he found out another great passion of his.

Now Oliver took the boy not just to fight the wind but

also to break waves as Shannon always showed his

enthusiasm and he never backed out when the water

conditions were hard; he was never afraid when some

mornings he pretended to go to school but instead he

parked his motorbike at Oliver’s home to go and surf in La

Punta. He got to school two hours later with the excuse

of having overslept.

High school was over at last, and he starts University in

Gran Canaria, which allows him to practise Wind in the

Mecca of the Canarian Wind —Pozo Izquierdo— and

Surf in new spots.

He feels sorry about the abandonment of Surf and Wind

by the Town Halls and Inter-island councils, who leave

private schools as the only way of learning these sports,

which being orientated towards tourism they can’t even

speak Spanish in many of them.

You can’t find board keepers near the spots either — very

useful installations to keep your equipment and not to

have to carry it all the time with you from home to the

beach and the other way around—. It wouldn’t be a bad

idea either to create a means of transport so that boys

could surf, as not all parents are ready to drive along

the paths towards La Punta, apart from the fact that

the surf equipment cannot be easily carried in every car.

According to Shannon, this is why the young people in

the Island are so alien to these sports; so much that many

people only relate Wind with the marquee they put up

during the World championship, and it’s sad that after 25

years of celebrations the participations of some majoreros

are just anecdotic, taking into account the Island’s good

conditions for the training of new riders.

Among Shannon’s desires we find that of taking part

again, like the last year, in Fuerteventura Wave Classic,

which will take place at the end of March in the Northern

Coasts of our Island.

Shannon, we really hope that your example set a

precedent and that in a few years we can meet a new

generation of surfers and windsurfers with majorero

accent. We also hope that this appeal we are making

from here, together with you, reaches the appropriate

institutions so that cases like yours become the rule and

not the exception.

de productos químicos. No investigamos mucho qué

.síndrome de disfunción cognitiva (SDC)

La disfunción cognitiva es un trastorno que pue-den presentar los perros de edad avanzada. Se trata de una degeneración en el sistema nervio-so central que provoca cambios de comporta-miento y alteración en las habilidades cognitivas.

Para hacerse una mejor idea, podemos decir

que presenta cierta similitud con el Alzhei-

mer en humanos. Algunos de los signos que

puede presentar un perro con SDC son:

— Eliminación inadecuada (el perro orina y

defeca en casa)

— Desorientación

— Alteraciones en el sueño

— Disminución o cambio de las interaccio-

nes con el dueño y otros animales

— Pérdida de actividad

— Confusión en hábitos simples rutinarios

— Nuevos miedos o ansiedades hacia cosas

conocidas

— Problemas para realizar órdenes ya

aprendidas

Se diagnostica realizando un examen neuroló-

gico y un análisis completo, así como una re-

copilación de las pautas de comportamiento

para descartar que no se trate de otro tipo de

enfermedad o de un problema de conducta.

La disfunción cognitiva no tiene cura, pero

podemos ralentizar los síntomas y frenar el

proceso con un tratamiento a base de medi-

cación, una dieta especial y siguiendo unas

pautas de relación con nuestro perro.

Podemos prevenir este síndrome comple-

.Canine cognitive dys-function syndrome (CDS)

The cognitive dysfunction is a disorder that affects advanced age dogs. It’s a degeneration of the central nervous system which causes behaviour changes and a disorder of the cognitive abilities.

To better understand it, we could say that

it’s similar to Alzheimer in human beings.

Some of the symptoms presented by a dog

suffering from CDS are:

— They relieve themselves in the wrong place

(inside the house)

— They appear lost and confused even in

familiar surroundings

— Sleep changes

— Change in their interactions (usually less

interactions) with the owner or with

other animals

— Activity loss

— Confusion in simple daily habits

— New fears and anxieties caused by already

known things

— Problems to obey already learnt

commands

It can be diagnosed by a neurologic test and a

complete check-up. Norms of behaviour must

also be compiled so as to rule out any other

kind of disease or a behaviour issue.

CDS cannot be cured but its symptoms can

be slowed down and the process can be

held back with medication, a special diet

and following some rules in the relationship

with our dog.

We can prevent this syndrome with food

supplements such as antioxidants, providing a

life style rich in stimuli, making them think and

work in a positive way by means of exercises.

We mustn’t mistake CDS for the separation

anxiety disorder, as the symptoms are very

similar. The separation anxiety disorder can

appear at any age.

I Ondulaba en contoneo la madera por dar la nota y, en un tiempo indefinido, sin principio, decidió poner manos a la obra de sonar por todos lados: en el calor de Pakistán, en las corrientes del Níger, en los altos de Italia, en los llanos de Cuba, en la estepas de Malí, en ríos de Hungría, en vaguadas de Guinea, en levantes de España, en altiplanos de Perú, en barrancos y orillas, aquí y allá. Aquí y allá reunió hijos y padres con voz de guitarros, cuatros, mandolas, charangos, discantes, tingolotangos, rebabs, batentes, vihuelas, cabacos… Cuando despertó de la borrachera de sonido, de los sueños moldeados en cien formas onduladas, estaba en una isla y entre los brazos llevaba un timple.

II Se nos otorgó los dones que se conceden a los pue-blos sólo cuando nacen distintos: se nos dio islas para que nos reconociéramos hermanos de viaje; el mar se nos dio, el mar para que rodásemos por el tiempo con sus puertas abiertas; también se nos dio el timple para que, sencilla-mente, nos enseñara a pisar sobre nuestra propia huella, una y otra vez, sobre nuestra propia huella.

III Antes de que el primer conquistador se marchara para siempre, fue a su país y trajo a mucha de su gente para que colonizaran las islas. La víspera de su despedida

reunió a pobladores de siempre junto a los nuevos colo-nos. Uno de los nativos quedó alelado por algo totalmente nuevo: el sonido de instrumentos musicales. Tras de oír dijo: «En vano han sido todas nuestras batallas; nos ha-bríamos dejado conquistar con tu música».

IV No hace mucho, ya desaparecidos Chano Flores el Puntal y Carmela la Cantarina, la única hija de ambos, En-gracia la Jaldúa, pidió que se le concediera todas las artes de sus padres. La diosa Fortuna no sólo no la escuchó sino que se dedicó a repartir entre las islas, con abundancia, como quien siembra, las facultades y el talento de aquellos folcloristas muertos: aquí retazos de cantos, allá tonadas de siempre, aquí sabor a folías, allá voces parranderas; aquí y allá ecos y más ecos y más ecos aún, espléndida-mente. Cuentan que, sin embargo, sólo llorando pudo la dio-sa desprenderse del timple.

V Cuentan que en las primeras incursiones a las islas, los conquistadores persiguieron a tres nativos, y que es-tos acabaron por esconderse lo mejor que pudieron. Una mujer, de entre ellos, en su afán de libertad, asió con tal fuerza la cara de su hijo que, para que no los delatase, sin querer, lo asfixió.

Es la historia de casi todos los pueblos: la de sus es-fuerzos por convertirse en lo que no pudieron llegar a ser. De ahí, cuántas tonadas asidas pero, también, cuán-tos cantares olvidados, cuántas coplas asfixiadas. Y, sin embargo, cuántos cantos para rehacernos de lo truncado. Cuántas vidas las de nuestro único hijo: el timple.

VI Hay todo un diálogo entre labores marineras y cam-pesinas, entre coplas de orilla e interior, entre rumores de belillos al antojo de las olas y silbidos del viento atrave-sando paredes de piedra, entre bridas y jarcias, sogas y tajarrias, cabos y atillos, rabizas y correas, vergas y tomi-zas… Cuerdas dispuestas, alineadas, como surcos y este-las, tonadillas anudadas: rumor del timple que nos vive y guía.

VII Parece que estemos hablando de nuestras tonadas, ritmos únicos, reflejos de otros ecos combatientes. Combatiente, Nenedán, se trasladó de lugar, según se cuenta, por deshacer agravios. Se retiró salvaje, a un lugar al que sólo se podía acceder por mar; así vivió, más que nadie, aislado y solo. Así vive, hecho memoria. Parece que estemos hablando de tiemple.

Marcos Hormiga

A pesar de su pronta emancipación de esta Isla, Marcos,

natural de Puerto del Rosario, siempre llevó muy dentro las

raíces de su pueblo majorero. Se licenció en Filología Inglesa,

en la Universidad de La Laguna, fue profesor de Enseñanzas

Medias durante siete años y actualmente lo es de la Escue-

la Oficial de Idiomas. Es poeta, escritor, traductor y —como

buen majorero, incapaz de negarse a los impulsos vitales que

le remueven por dentro— gran improvisador y parrandero.

Entre todas estas artes, ¿por cuál te decantas?

Aunque me da un poco de pudor la palabra poeta, si en

alguna faceta me gustaría que se reconociera lo que hago

sería en la «poesía culta». No desdeño la poesía popular, es

más, creo que un poeta que se considere culto y moderno

debe manejar las herramientas de la poesía tradicional. Así

en «Poemas de Pe a Paz» —poemas de mis tardíos años 20,

los que considero mis primeros poemas aprovechables—, me

metí de cabeza en la modernidad de aquel entonces; pero en

el siguiente libro que publiqué, «De Sobredumbres» —de-

dicado a Fuerteventura—, di un paso atrás y demostré que

dominaba las estructuras tradicionales.

¿Cuándo empieza tu afición por las letras?, ¿cuándo te deci-

des a publicar?

Me recuerdo de niño escribiendo en una libretita azul, mis poe-

mas de infancia. La he buscado por todos lados, pero no logro

encontrarla. Los poemas que publico con 33 años correspon-

den ya a la época tardía (mis 26-27). Tuve la suerte de coincidir,

en un centro de enseñanza, con el poeta Eugenio Padorno y

me atreví a enseñárselos; él me dio la fuerza para publicarlos.

Pedro Lezcano, un tótem de la Literatura Canaria, también me

animó a hacerlo. Desde entonces, cada cierto tiempo publico

algo; de entrada, con intención de hacerme nombre —Don

Miguel de Unamuno decía «Literatura es ansias de inmortali-

dad»— y ahora por puro impulso vital.

Háblanos de la evolución de la Fuerteventura de tu infancia

hasta la de hoy

En el año 57 Fuerteventura estaba muy cerca del tercer-

mundismo. Eran los últimos retazos de la Fuerteventura tra-

dicional. Todavía existían alabarderos, latoneros, personas

dedicadas a la cestería, a la agricultura… Era un sector prác-

ticamente primario, de subsistencia. Recuerdo una infancia

de muchas carencias, por un lado, pero por otro, me vienen

a la cabeza manifestaciones culturales muy propias, que el

pueblo celebraba con gran énfasis, debido a que esas so-

ciedades formaban prácticamente una endogamia cultural.

En los años 60 hay un salto cualitativo, empieza el turismo.

Los 70 son un disloque, y de ahí en adelante se intentó

hacer en 30 años lo que debería haberse hecho en 200. No

hubo transición, pasamos como quien dice, «de la alparga-

ta al ordenador». Desde mi punto de vista, lo que necesita-

ba Fuerteventura era una especie de moratoria como la que

nos está sucediendo. Mi obra «De Sobredumbres» es un

poemario que explica las soledades históricas, atmosféricas

y geográficas de nuestra Isla. Está dividido en 3 partes, en

las que intento explicar precisamente esta evolución, y me

aventuro a dar una visión futura que aboga por la mesura.

Tu opinión sobre la transmisión de la cultura.

La cultura desaparece cuando desaparece el medio en el que

se mueve. Antes había Cultura Religiosa y existían los Ran-

chos de Ánimas; había una Cultura de Labor, con un canto

para el momento en que se araba, otro cuando se recogían

las mieses, otro cuando se descamisaba el millo… Al desapa-

recer la función social van desapareciendo las manifestacio-

nes culturales que la acompañaban. Sin embargo, seguimos

teniendo fiestas y ahí es donde el folclore festivo se mantie-

ne, conservando este tipo de cultura. El folclore seguirá vivo,

porque en lo festivo se manifiesta lo que es innato a las per-

sonas de una localidad, y esta forma de cultura de la Isla no

necesita promoción, evoluciona naturalmente. He conocido

a grandes parranderos —no podría nombrarlos a todos—,

que entienden el folclore de forma innata y de forma innata

lo han transmitido y lo han engrandecido.

¿Tu relación con el mundo del folclore y la parranda?

Tenía 15 años y veía una parranda y se me iba el oído. Me

acuerdo de cómo me fijaba en parranderos viejos cuando to-

caban la guitarra. Yo no tenía, pero me aprendía los acordes y

los ensayaba en el antebrazo, gastando la camisa del roce de

los dedos. En el folclore está todo el mundo literario oral de

la tradición majorera. En las coplas majoreras te encuentras

a Góngora y a Quevedo, Quintillas, Sextillas, Liras... La Folía,

que guarda la estructura de una décima, desaparece en todo

el mundo cultural hispano menos en Canarias, y son Folías del

siglo XV. La Redondilla, el Romance…, hay verdaderas joyas

cantadas en el folclore, donde la literatura culta ha pasado al

pueblo, y éste se ha encargado de mantenerla. Así, en Cana-

rias tenemos unas 70 tonadas diferentes, entre canciones y

ritmos populares. Eso es una riqueza inmaterial impresionante,

escarbas un poco y encuentras cinco siglos de tradición.

Gracias Marcos, por dedicarnos tu tiempo y por acercarnos

un poco más, con tus saberes, a esta Fuerteventura que ha-

bitamos.

Despite having left this island at a very early age, Marcos,

born in Puerto del Rosario, always carried deep inside the

roots of his majorera village.

He got his degree in English philology by the University

of La Laguna, he was a secondary education teacher for

seven years, ant he is a teacher at the Official Languages

School at present. He’s a poet, a writer and a translator

and —as a good majorero, unable to stop the vital impulse

that vibrates inside— a good improviser and folk lover.

Among all these arts, which one do you go for?

Although the word «poet» makes me feel a bit shy, if there

is a field where I’d like my works to be recognized it would

be within highbrow poetry. I don’t disdain popular poetry, on

the contrary I think that any poets that consider themselves

as highbrow modern poets must master the tools of popular

poetry. So in «Poemas de Pe a Paz» —poems belonging to

my late 20’s, the ones I consider to be my first worthwhile

poems— I plunged into the modernity of those times; but in

the next book I published, «De Sobredumbres» —dedicated

to Fuerteventura—, I took one step backwards and I proved I

mastered the popular poetry.

When did your interest in arts arise? When did you decide to

publish your Works?

I remember writing on a little blue notebook when I was a child,

my childhood poems. I have been looking for it everywhere,

but I can’t find it. The poems I published when I was 33 belong

to a later period in my life (26, 27 years old). I was lucky to meet

the poet Eugenio Padorno in a teaching centre, and I dared to

show him my poems. He gave me strength to publish them.

Pedro Lezcano, a totem of Canarian Literature, encouraged me

too. Since then I have been publishing some works every now

and then, first of all to make a name for myself —Don Miguel

de Unamuno used to say «Literature is craving immortality» —

and now just because of my vital impulse.

Talk to us about the development of Fuerteventura from your

childhood until nowadays.

In the year 57 Fuerteventura was almost bordering

backwardness. It was the last remains of traditional Fuerte-

ventura. Halberdiers, panel beaters, people dedicated to

basketwork and farming still existed… It was a practically

primitive survival sector.

On the one hand I remember a childhood of shortages, but

on the other hand I also remember lots of typical cultural

expressions that the people celebrated very enthusiastically,

as those societies made up a cultural inbreeding.

In the 60’s there was a qualitative jump, tourism starts. The 70’s

were times of change, and from then onwards there was an

attempt to do in 30 years that which should have been done

in 200 years. There was no transition period, we suddenly

substituted the canvas sandal for the computer. From my

point of view Fuerteventura needed a moratorium, like the

one that is taking place now. My work «De Sobredumbres»

is a collection of poems that talks about our island’s historical,

atmospheric and geographical solitudes. It’s divided into

three parts, in which I try to explain this development, and I

dare to foresee a future of restraint.

Your opinion about the culture transfer.

Culture disappears when the so does the environment it is

surrounded by. Some time ago there was a religious culture,

and the Rancho de Ánimas existed; there was a labour

culture, with a song for every part of the ploughing process,

the harvest, that of cleaning the «millo» (similar to sweet

corn)… When these social functions disappeared, so did the

cultural expressions that matched them. However we still

hold parties, so the party folklore remains, keeping this kind

of culture. Folklore will always remain because it shows that

which is innate in the local people, and this kind of culture

in the island doesn’t need any promotion, it develops in a

natural way. I have met great folk musicians —I couldn’t

mention them all— who understand folklore in an innate

way and so they have transferred it, thus ennobling folklore.

What about your relationship with Canarian folklore?

I was fifteen when my ears were attracted by Canarian

music bands. I remember how I gazed at the old folk playing

the guitar. I didn’t have one, but I learnt the chords and I

rehearsed on my forearm, having my shirt worn out by my

fingers rubbing. In folklore we meet the whole world of the

majorera oral literature. In majorera stanzas we find Góngora,

Quevedo, we also find limericks, sextets, «liras»… «La Folia»,

which had the structure of a ten-line poem, disappears in the

whole Spanish culture, except in The Canary Islands, and they

belong to the XV century. Quatrains, romances… there are

true jewel songs in folklore where the highbrow poetry has

been handed down to the people, and the people have been

in charge of keeping it alive. So in The Canary Islands we

have around 70 different tunes what with songs and popular

rhythms. This is an amazing spiritual wealth, you deepen into

it a little bit and you find five centuries of tradition.

da de artesanías. Según Laura debía tener

el sonido «Ka» y para Álvaro sería bonito

incluir la palabra «amor». Pues resulta que

«Munay» significa amor en quechua, una

lengua indígena sudamericana, y «Ka» sig-

nifica fuerza vital en la mitología egipcia.

Estos dos conceptos sintetizan el trabajo

de los artesanos que colaboran con esta

tienda llamada Munaika.
