.MILLS AND FUERTEVENTURA II
.by Janey Castañeyra
The miller —whose mastery is possible to understand when
you visit the Centro Museístico del Molino de Tiscamanita, or
La Molina de Tefía, in the Ecomuseo de La Alcogida, where
public exhibitions are carried out— only uses his art and craft
to get his machinery ready and start grinding the grain.
The process starts by laying the pieces of cloth on the blades.
As either the tower in horizontal axis mills like the roof in
vertical axis mills can spin easily, a single person can position
the sails facing the wind just using the steering wheel.
The wind power makes sails spin horizontally, and this traction
turns vertical when the rotation of the gearwheel gets to
the screw. This spin gets on the upper milling stone, which
is moveable, by means of a part called gaff. The grinding
of the grain takes place thanks to the friction between the
moveable upper milling stone and the fixed lower stone.
The miller must control, by using the brake, the speed and
pace of the spin so that the grinding is the right one. If
it mills too quickly the grain can get burnt, while if the
wind isn’t strong enough or the friction on the stone isn’t
adequate and the grinding is slow, the texture won’t be
the expected one.
The way followed by the toasted grain starts in the hopper
and the mill spout, from where the grain is gradually
dropped between the stones, which grind and take the
grain to the flour trough, where the grain falls and is taken
to a sack which is placed at the bottom of the machinery
of the tower mill (horizontal axis mill), or on the middle
floor if it is a vertical axis mill.
Horizontal and vertical axis mills are controlled by using the
brake, which counts on a metallic platen which presses the
gear wheel to reduce its strength. Likewise, the miller must
also control the separation between the upper and lower
stones to regulate the degree of grinding. This is achieved
by means of another lever located at the lower part of
the raft. Controlling the friction and the grinding speed is
essential, not just to obtain a good quality «gofio» but to
keep and safeguard the integrity of the building, whose
machinery could break into pieces because of a misuse of
the brake or the lever.
Another necessary task for the windmills maintenance is that
of «chiseling» the milling stones, once the stones reach a
certain wear away level as a consequence of the friction.
The miller, at times, just with a manual crane or with the
help of their sons or apprentices, must partially dismantle the
grinding machinery to «chisel» the stones. With a hammer
and a chisel, the masters made the milling stones recover
their bumpy texture before mounting the machinery again.
The features of the horizontal axis mills, with a wider plan
and whose machinery isn’t so tight up to the structure, as it’s
the case of the vertical axis mills, make this task easier.
Witnessing a majorero windmill working is quite an experience. From outside, its majestic plan on the ground makes a contrast
with the smooth flow of its blades spinning and dancing in the wind. However, it’s hard to imagine how this smoothness is the
result of a powerful traction in the inside of the windmill making two huge stones, which could weight together more than a
ton, spin among creaking wood and the deaf and never-ending murmur of the grinding.

Macaronesia: ¿Cómo llegas a Fuerteventura?

M: ¿Cuándo empiezas a practicar SUP?
surfing.
M: ¿Qué has aprendido de tu padre?
Me

Sure you have already seen her around every spot in the
island, surfing with a perfect, energetic, risky and, at the same
time, refined style. This fair-haired woman —whom you can
find surfing in her bikini, even well into the winter— arrived
in Fuerteventura being only a baby, and she still remembers
the dust that his father’s hired Daihatsu Jeep raised when
driving towards the North in search of waves and wind.
Macaronesia: How did you arrive in Fuerteventura?
Sonni: When I was very young, as my father was a
professional windsurfer —Jürgen Hönscheid—, the whole
family travelled with him around the world to keep him
company. We spent a long time in Hawaii, but in the
end my parents decided to settle in Fuerteventura; it was
closer to our family in Germany, the conditions were very
similar to the ones in Hawaii, nice people, waves all year
trough and hot water. We lived opposite the sea, just a
few steps from the water, and this is something we still
value as much as the first day.
M: When did you start in the world of the water sports?
S: Being very young I started with the boogie, and I was 12
when I took up windsurf. Then I left water sports aside for
some time and I focused on tennis, until one day, when I
was 14, I saw a girl taking a wave on a surfboard, and I got
so astonished that I started surfing. My father never put
pressure on us as far as sports were concerned, he always
offered taking us to surf with him, but he never forced us. I
regret a little bit not having started surfing before, most of
all when my father tells us about how empty peaks were
before, and that they even looked for people to go and
surf in Lobos, not to be completely alone in the water.
M: When did you start practising SUP?
S: I took up with SUP two years ago. I still prefer surf, but SUP
is a nice alternative, if waves are not perfect, to escape from
the crowd. I also like rowing in quiet water, and practising
downwind (rowing in the open sea, the wind behind you,
taking waves). SUP is a nice way of training the whole body:
balance, strength, resistance… it helps me a lot with surfing.
M: In which sport do you prefer to compete?
S: I prefer SUP competitions, as the result is quite clear:
if you get to the finishing line first you win; it doesn’t
depend on any jury’s marks.
M: Which are the perfect conditions for a swim?
S: A swim is perfect for me when I surf with my family,
my boyfriend or good friends. If waves are also good and
there is a nice sunset, then it’s even more perfect.
M: Do you find male chauvinism in the water?
S: I have lived, and still do, situations where some boys have
been dominated by their male chauvinism, but it’s true that
the boys with whom I’ve been surfing for many years have
supported me and they have even helped me improve my
surfing. Girls in general find it more difficult to start taking
waves, maybe because of strength, courage, or just believing
we can’t do it… But it’s becoming more and more common
to find girls in the water, and this is exiting.
M: What have you learnt from your father?
S: When I started surfing I was lucky to have my father
teaching me, from the very beginning, the rules of surfing,
and how to behave properly in the water. This helps a lot,
most of all if you travel and surf in places where there
is a lot of localism, as in that situation it doesn’t matter
whether you are a boy or a girl.
M: We know you make wonderful paintings. Tell us about
this hobby of yours.
S: I always painted a little bit, but around one and a
half years ago I found my style, or my style found me.
I’m inspired by my own life, already lived experiences,
everything around me, people, trips, countries, my
passion for waves, the surrounding nature… some weeks
I don’t paint, suddenly I feel I want to start painting, in a
concrete moment, and when I finish the painting I realize
it’s just what I had felt at that moment. I feel lucky to have
another way of expressing myself. I have made two pieces
of work as a designer: one for a great surfing brand, and
another one for a skateboard brand, for which I designed
a skate longboard. My first exhibition will take place
eventually.
M: Something else you want to add…
S: Thanks a lot to Macaronesia for this interview, and see
you in the water!

As we see, we are having a pretty eclectic season, so we ask, what is not
fashionable?
My proposal this month is a very trendy garment for this autumn-winter
season 2011/12. I am talking about the knit jumper, the typical grand
dad’s jumper three sizes bigger than ours that we can find in our grand
parents’ closet, being always full of garments that today are recovering
their value. This is a piece that we can include in every look, because it
fits every style.
One of the most typical ways to combine it is by wearing it with jeans
and an oversized t- shirt, but as I said before, it is suitable for every single
look. What I propose is to create retro styles, even better if it is vintage.
In this collection, the different brown tones are the predominant ones. A
thin belt, so trendy this season, is the perfect fellow for the knit jumper
that fits tightly the waist and makes a lot of work to the jumper. If we
add a pair of medium length boots with laces and a maxi-tote bag we
will have reached the perfect look for this season.

berse a:
.separation anxiety disorder
The separation anxiety disorder is one of the most usual
problems in dogs, causing them a high degree of stress
and a deep sense of unease.
This kind of behaviour takes place when the animal is left
on its own and its owners are not at home. One or several
of the following symptoms can be observed:
— Destructiveness: the dog breaks things, usually pieces
of clothes belonging to its master, as well as pieces of
furniture, or anything it finds in its way.
— Inappropriate depositions: the dog urinates and
defecates inside the house, even on top of beds, only
when its master is not in.
— Excessive vocalization: the dog barks, cries or howls
most of the time when it’s on its own.
This problem may appear whatever the age and it may be
caused by:
— An early weaning of the puppies (before six weeks)
— The excess of dependence generated by the masters
themselves, trying to overprotect the puppies.
— The absence of the master on holidays or being off sick,
after a period of continuous contact with its master.
— Changes in the family.
— When the dog has been frightened while being on its
own.
The prognosis of separation anxiety disorder is usually
good, provided the masters cooperate, the problem is not
chronic and the dog isn’t suffering from other kinds of
disorders.
Leaving the TV on, punishing the dog or adopting another
pet is not the way of solving the problem.
The dog’s anxious behaviour must be ignored, and
however you must reward it when it’s calmed, as well as
change all the bad habits at home. The best thing to do
would be to turn to a trainer or ethologist, expert in this
matter, who can advise and guide us to get a change in
its behaviour.

.plantas medicinales I
A parte
dicinales.
plantas medicinales.
Medicinal herbs have been, since the beginning of
humanity, the best allies for the humans’ health.
Methodical observation, experimentation, oral and
written history have allowed the acknowledgement,
selection and survival of the use of medicinal herbs in
almost every culture and continent. The first records
about medicinal herbs are almost five thousand years old,
and they are in the shape of clay tablets, engraved by
Sumerians.
The reason why animals grazing freely in the meadows
and mountains don’t suffer from as many disorders as their
relatives confined in farms is maybe because free animals,
besides living peacefully and taking nutritional herbs, also
take a great deal of medicinal herbs that grow beside the
forage crop at the borders of the meadows.
There is a series of herbs that provide us easy and effective
remedies for a great deal of the most common disorders we
suffer from. We use some of them as seasoning; some others,
as infusions, inhalations, poultice… Apart from their medical
properties, some of them are beautiful ornamental plants
due to the nice colour of their flowers, the greenness of their
leaves and the pleasant scent some of them give off.
Phytotherapy is the study of the healing properties of
herbs. One of their main advantages is the absence or
scarcity of side effects derived from their consumption
—something very damaging and common in medicine
based on pharmaceutical chemistry—. Most medicinal
herbs don’t usually require taking precautions other than
not exceeding the prescribed dose. The most interesting
point is the effects that these herbs have on our organism,
stimulating our immune system, and self-healing natural
systems our own body has, making up for some biological
deficiencies.
There are some seasoning herbs we use in the elaboration
of our culinary dishes and which also have healing
properties. Below we will tell you about some of them,
and in Macaronesia’s next issue we’ll publish a list of the
properties and uses of the herbs we know as medicinal.

do y verde cubierto de niebla, propiedad de los gorilas;

.Uganda,a gorillas´ land
Improvised concert with sticks and plastic demijohns in a pygmy village.
Not to stare at them, a difficult to bear in mind warning.
The Pearl of Africa, so it was named by Winston Churchill
70 years ago.
Located between the sadly known Rwanda and The Congo,
the African grassland, full of lions, giraffes, and those
huge animals with trunks, it turns into a mountainous,
wet and totally green landscape in Uganda. The arrival
to its capital reminds of the rest of the African countries,
Nairobi, Maputo, Antananarive, Kampala, different names
for the same urban chaos where thousands of substandard
dwellings are built around a city centre that reminds of an
occidental capital after being bombarded. In a city like this
one the streets are not a vehicle to different points, like in
Europe, but a common place where the population spends
their time looking for a way or earning their living.
Still far from tourism, and with no means to lodge occidentals,
Uganda hides two nature reserves where some of the last
mountain gorillas’ colonies in the world live: The Silverback.
Getting to them requires a lot of time and patience.
Mhaginga national park, to the southwest, is a reserve
shared by Rwanda, Uganda and The Congo. The herds of
gorillas living there don’t understand what boundaries are
because they don’t need them, which makes it difficult to
locate them at certain periods of the year. It isn’t convenient
to follow them when they go deep into Rwanda, let alone
if they decide to go to The Congo, unless one doesn’t
appreciate one’s life too much. Set up thanks to the efforts
by Diane Fossey, in defence of gorillas, this area had been
the pygmies home until they were expelled from their land.
For this reason they are now considered the most deprived
people in Africa. Living as refugees over different countries
in that area, no government wants them in their lands,
and they manage to survive thanks to an international help
which doesn’t reach them. The pygmies are now a ghost
people. Having no rights, no responsibilities, and no official
documentation they can’t go very far.
An hour northwest we find The Bwindi impenetrable
forest, a reserve where around 500 silverbacks live in
their habitat. A deep and green valley enveloped in fog,
the gorillas’ ownership; we can only get in there if we
are invited, always through the national agency which
issues the 8 daily licenses. The long walk starts going
down the valley, and ends when the first herd is found.
The invitation lasts an hour. 60 minutes during which you
must obey their rules: not to stare at them, not to make
any abrupt movements, not to use a flash and to speak
quietly. They don’t want to be disturbed anymore.
They say there are some human traces in their look,
as there are some wild traces in humans. If we tried to
exchange those traces that don’t belong to us we could
let gorillas be only wild, and humans be only human, and
that way it would all be much better for all of us.

¿Cómo te defines a ti mismo?
exacto y haces muchos destrozos.
das.
Hood.
piedras… El acabado suelo hacerlo con cera, aunque
últimamente he estado usando barnices para pulseras y
colgantes.
¿Qué piezas fabricas? Tallo de todo: cuencos, cucharas,
cajas, llaveros, colgantes, castañuelas, percheros, cuelga-
llaves, marcos, bancos…
¿Qué has hecho últimamente que te apasione? He estado
ART
He started his training in cabinetmaking and carving more than 20 years ago. He has run a
handicrafts and fine arts shop, taught courses of carving for beginners, but he finally found out that
he preferred a more bohemian kind of life, with no fixed timetables, so he decided to embrace the
adventure —together with Marlén, his partner— of craft markets. Nowadays, proud of his career,
Marcos is living at his own pace in the small village of Lajares, and he sells his own handicrafts
in markets such as the C.C. El Campanario, the one in Lajares and also in the inter-island council’s
crafts shops.
How would you define yourself?
I’m a master craftsman, a wood carver, but most of all I consider myself an extreme
recycler; you can take something out of anything, everything is useful.
And how would you define wood carving? Wood has some streaks you must respect and, at
the beginning, when you don’t have much experience, it’s very difficult to get the hang of it,
and you spoil a lot of wood, but once you learn the ropes you just have to let yourself go.
Which kind of wood do you prefer? My favourite wood is walnut, because it’s very thick and you
hardly find streaks in it, so you can carve in any direction; however I carve any kind of wood.
When I was a carving trainee I was told you can only carve fine woods, if you want your work
to last for a long time, but this isn’t true. How long your work lasts also depends on how much
its owner cares for it, so if you take care of it…It doesn’t matter if you carve pine.
Where do you take your materials from? Dumps, debris, clean points, or from the sea… It’s
very laborious because you have to remove the varnish, nails and other objects from the
wood. You need good sharp tools. I have brought some of them from Sheffield, an English
city which is famous in the whole world for the quality of its steel. Robin Hood’s sword was
said to be made there.
How has your technique developed? It’s getting simpler and simpler. With experience I have
also acquired agility and speed, and now I devote more time to getting a perfect finish and an
almost impeccable polish. The people here are different from those in the north of the peninsula.
Here they ask for lighter wood and they aren’t so purist, so this gives me the chance to make
innovations in acrylic pigments, mixing them with other materials such as shells, stones… I usually
finish with wax, though lately I’ve been using varnish for bracelets and necklaces.
Which kind of pieces do you make? I carve everything: bowls, spoons, boxes, key rings,
necklaces, castanets, coat racks, key hangers, frames, benches… and I like symbols from
every culture, so I carve any kind of drawings.
What have you done lately that fascinates you? I have been working with some restorers, and
we’ve been restoring the pulpit in La Oliva’s church, and also in Betancuria’s cathedral and
Tetir’s church. I love restoration, it’s a real challenge to reproduce something as it originally
was; for example, in Tetir’s church I had to reproduce Santo Domingo de Guzmán’s fingers.
At those works you have to imagine the position of those fingers and give them the right
proportion considering the rest of the fingers, their nails… It brings you a great satisfaction to
see a work like this finished, although nobody realizes it.
Your dream as a restorer… To be offered to restore la Virgen de Covadonga.
Thanks, Marco, for the beauty of your art, which teaches us to value the works of art as
they deserve, and for encouraging us to recycle in this world of overconsumption.

(The Flaming Lips, Four Tet, Sun Ra...) y de
da «Found out» o el tema que cierra, «Jamelia»,
cipio a fin.
Tienen estupendos momentos «Everything but
the girl» o incluso «Imagination» (a ver quién se
refrito. Muchos grupos deberían de tomar
nota de estos fenómenos, ¡menos ruido y
más nueces, por favor!
Un gran disco; valiente e inspiradísimo, tera-
pia para los oídos y el cerebro.
This record was released in 2010, but it’s
worth commenting on, it’s a real jewel.
Dan Snaith, a thirty-two-year-old Canadian,
doctor of Maths, leaves us his third work
with Caribou: Swim.
Surrounded by expert musicians (The Flaming
Lips, Four Tet, Sun Ra, etc..) and by an
excellent production team, Caribou gives us
this wonderful record, full of unprecedented
details, tempo and dynamics in the panorama
of independent electronic music; fresh air, at
last…
As Snaith said to the BBC, «I want to make
dance music, which sounds more like water
than metal», a real good-will statement by
this genius of cerebral music. .
The record opens with Odessa, a perfect
example of his intentions; the next theme,
Sun, is a wonder, an authentic «concentrate»
of dance atmosphere for nostalgic people,
cleverly distilled… even the fantastic «Found
out» or the closing theme, «Jamelia», a
gorgeous song… in other words, a fantastic
record, well cared for from beginning to
end. Orchestral arrangements, interludes
and accompaniments of terrific quality,
the voices, the echoes…etc. A real manual
about how good themes must be made,
simple but deep and effective.
The record sounds as if it were enveloped in a
kind of ethereal and sophisticated air; they get
a unique and original sound full of messages
and references to the first trance song, or
even to the acid house, without getting
caught up in opportunism, and without selling
themselves out to mainstream. They have
brilliant moments «Everything but the girl»
or even «Imagination» (Who remembers it?),
a bit of St. Germain or Cut Copy, but really
improved and deeper.
So, it’s possible to make high quality dance
music, evocative of older times without
losing originality, never rehashing… A lot of
bands should follow the example of these
phenomena… less ado about nothing,
please!
A great record; courageous and inspired, a
therapy for the ears and the brain.…
