Misson Statement

The Mizzou Alumni Association proudly supports the best interests and traditions of Missouri’s fl agship university

and its alumni worldwide.

Lifelong relationships are the foundation of our support. These relationships are enhanced through

advocacy, communication and volunteerism.

The past year has been one fi lled with much celebra-tion. Last fall, we honored our past at the Homecom-ing Centennial and just weeks later, we made a com-mitment to our future by becoming the newest member of the Southeastern Conference. These changes have resulted in the beginning of a new era at Mizzou, one that is re-energizing our 270,000 alumni worldwide.

Homecoming holds a special place in the hearts of alumni like you. As you know, Mizzou is recognized as having one of the oldest Homecoming traditions

and alumni have been coming home since 1911. The Homecoming Centennial resulted in more than a victory on the football fi eld. Service to our campus and community is annually an important part of our Homecoming festivi-ties and last year we hosted our inaugural day of service and the nation’s largest multi-day blood drive.Just weeks after the Homecoming Centennial, the university had even more cause to celebrate as we accepted an invitation to join the Southeastern Conference. In addition to being the nation’s premiere athletic conference, the SEC has an 80-year tradition of academic excellence. Mizzou is a great fi t for the league and the move has re-energized alumni.Volunteer numbers are booming at your alumni association. Since announcing our move to the SEC, alumni have organized or redeveloped 26 new alumni organiza-tions. From Minneapolis to Birmingham and Portland to Jacksonville, volunteers have been hosting new activities to keep alumni connected to the university we love. The theme of alumni support continued, as well. Last year we achieved a new mem-bership record of 44,415.Thank you for your membership in the Mizzou Alumni Association. We are commit-ted to our mission of connecting alumni, supporting the university, and preserving our great traditions and your support makes this possible.

For Mizzou,

Todd McCubbin, MEd ‘95Executive Director, Mizzou Alumni Association

Mizzou is recognized as the birthplace of the Homecoming tradition in 1911. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the first Homecoming celebration at the University of Missouri. To preside over the festivities, former MU Ath-letic Director Chester L. Brewer will serve as the 2011 Homecoming Grand Marshal. Brewer, who passed away in 1953, will be represented by members of his family.

Brewer worked in a variety of positions during his time at Mizzou. He served as athletic director and, at different times, coached football, basketball, base-ball, and track. During his reign as athletic director, Brewer was responsible for improvements to Rollins Field as well as the construction of Memorial Stadium in 1926 and Brewer Fieldhouse in 1930. One of his most notable achievements, however, began early during his time at Mizzou when he orga-nized the first homecoming celebration.

After meeting on a neutral site for twenty years, the Missouri-Kansas rivalry was renewed when the football game was played for the first time on a col-lege campus in 1911. To add excitement to the game, Brewer invited alumni to “come home.” As part of the game’s festivities, a parade and spirit rally took place. He also organized a gathering of former letter winners which led to the creation of the M Men’s Club, known today as the Varsity M Association.

On Nov. 25, 1911 a record crowd of 9,000 fans packed Rollins Field. Although the Tigers and Jayhawks tied 3-3, something much greater happened that day – the birth of a new tradition. Each year, thousands of alumni and friends come home to celebrate the tradition of Mizzou Homecoming. Join the Mizzou

Alumni Association on Oct. 15 as we cel-ebrate the Mizzou Homecoming Centennial.
