When the Son of Man Comes

Matthew 25:31-46

Few things on earth are more anticipated than a soldiers return home.

Who is the Son of Man?Matthew 16:13 NKJV When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, "Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Matthew 16:16 NKJV

Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

When the Son of Man Comes

Remember from Matthew 24:45 through Matthew 25:30, Jesus refers to wise and faithful servants, ten virgins (part of the wedding party), talents entrusted to servants; therfore, Matthew 25:31-46 refers primarily to Christians! Those who are prepared, and those who are not.

Matthew 25:31-46 NKJV "When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. (32) All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. (33) And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left.

Matthew 25:31-46 continued (34) Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: (35) for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; (36) I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’

Matthew 25:31-46 continued (37) "Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? (38) When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? (39) Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?' (40) And the King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Matthew 25:31-46 continued (41) "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels: (42) for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; (43) I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

Matthew 25:31-46 continued (44) "Then they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?' (45) Then He will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.' (46) And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

1. He will come at an unexpected time.

An Unexpected TimeMatthew 24:36 NKJV "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only.

Matthew 24:44 NKJV Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

Matthew 25:13 NKJV "Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

When the Son of Man Comes in His Glory

1. He will come at an unexpected time.2. In the same manner as He left.

Acts 1:9-11 NKJV Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. (10) And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, (11) who also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.”

Revelation 1:7 NKJV Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

dissolved.

Revelation 3:11 NKJV Behold, I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one may take your crown.

Revelation 22:20 NKJV He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming quickly." Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus!

1 Corinthians 15:52 NKJV (52) in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

2 Peter 3:9-12 NKJV The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. (10) But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up.

2 Peter 3:9-12 continued (11) Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, (12) looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?

Matthew 25:10-12 NKJV And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. (11) "Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' (12) But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.’

dissolved.6. The door to repentance will shut.7. He will separate the sheep (good) from the goats

(evil).

John 5:28-29 NKJV Do not marvel at this; for the hour is coming in which all who are in the graves will hear His voice (29) and come forth-- those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation.

A Two-Fold Resurrection

Separating the Sheep from the Goats• Give no food to the hungry

• Give no drink to the thirsty.

• Do not take in strangers.

• Do not clothe the naked.

A Great Day for SheepMatthew 24:46-47 NKJV Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. (47) Assuredly, I say to you that he will make him ruler over all his goods.

Matthew 25:21 NKJV His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'

A Great Day for Sheep

Matthew 25:34 NKJV Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 'Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

A Great Day for Sheep

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 NKJV (16) For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (17) Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. (18) Therefore comfort one another with these words.

A Truly Sad Day for Goats

Matthew 25:12 NKJV But he answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.'

Matthew 25:30 NKJV And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Matthew 25:41 NKJV "Then He will also say to those on the left hand, 'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels:

Matthew 25:46 NKJV And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

2 Thessalonians 1:7-10 NKJV (7) and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, (8) in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (9) These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, (10) when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe, because our testimony among you was believed.
