Weeklong Kanda Sashtiutsavam from November 3

By Dr. K. A. VijayaraghavanKids start firing crackers and

sparklers a week before Dee-pavali and this continues uptoKarthigai Deepam.

During this cracker season, your pets get frightened of thesounds, and tend to take shel-ter under the cots in darkrooms.

Some dogs are so cared ofthese sounds that they do noteven come out for answeringnature’s calls, and some evengo off during the Deepavali sea-son. Is it not a pity that, whenyou and your family are enjoy-ing the lights and sounds, yourpets should spend their time inisolation and in darkness?

It is possible for you to trainyour dog also to enjoy the lightsand sounds, and also the goodfood during this festival sea-son.

The best approach will be tohold the dog and make it watchwhile the sparklers and crack-

Train your dog to enjoy Deepavali

During Deepavali celebra-tions children get injured due tocareless handling of fireworks.Parents are indirectly respon-sible for these accidents asthey fail to educated and guidethe children on the correctways of handling fireworks.

The Loss Prevention Asso-ciation of India Ltd. (LPA), forthe past few years, has beenguiding children and elders onthe proper ways of handlingfireworks.

Simple rules of safety asdescribed in the Safety Bulle-tin of the Loss Prevention As-sociation are as follows:

Don’t light crackers insidethe house, or light candles andoil lamps near curtains or anyother combustible material.

Hold sparklers away fromthe body. Light rockets point-ing them straight up.

Never light fireworks frombalconies or near buildings: use

Do’s and dont’s for safehandling of crackers

open grounds.Don’t bend over fireworks

while lighting them: light themfrom the side.

Don’t wear long, loose, thinflowing dresses while playingwith fireworks.

Never put fireworks in pock-ets.

Never light fireworks underconfinement in a metal con-tainer.

Never light a flower pot byholding it.

Never store fireworks orunpack them near a flame or aheat source.

Never return to a fireworkonce lit – it may explode in yourface.

Pour water over burns andgo to a doctor. Don’t apply oint-ment, butter or any oily sub-stance.

Show concern for infants, theaged and the sick. Don’t lightloud crackers near them.

ers go on, so that it will slowlycast off the fear for them. Donot at all allow it to go under thecot. Your holding it will help thedog give up its fear gradually.

This is very much like train-ing your pet dog to walk on theroad. If your pet had beenmostly an indoor dog and if youtake it out on the road all onsudden it will get scared of thevehicles and the crowd on theroad. If you take it out for shortdistances regularly, it will castoff the fear and start walkingboldly on the road.

So, what is needed is agradual exposure of your petdog to the lights and soundsassociated with Deepavali.

Do not feed your dog with toomany sweets during the sea-son. After giving a sweet ortwo, give it a raw carrot so thatits teeth will get cleaned. If thedog allows it, clean its teethwith vinegar after it has con-sumed some sweets.

NO HOLDS BARREDTHE SARKAR’S GOLD DREAM

It is a constitutional right of the prince and the pauperof Mother India to dream big or small but the licence stopsat the point when the dreamer wakes and shouts, “Eureka!Come on, dig for 1000 tons of gold in Unnao!”.The dreamerfancied himself the richest man if not in the world, at leastin India, unseating friend Mukesh Ambani.

The country is agog at the prospect of seeing so muchgold disemboweled by God and perhaps a new type ofgovernment in the country where the citizen will no longerdiscuss the priceof onion but fork out whatever the vendordemands since there is enough for all and to spare, a realcase of Ram Rajya!

When I was in college, ‘Mackenna’s Gold’, a Hollywoodwestern picture, fired our imagination and, if I can stillswear by my memory, Gregory Peck was the gold chaser. It was a great moviesince no movie can make Peck lessthan great.

Well, coming back to Unnao, our great ArchaelogicalSurvey of India, in order to justify its existence, launcheda dig and may, in the course of a few years, emerge from theopposite side of the globe minus the gold! If some of themsurvive the picnic, we could all read a novel by dreamerSarkar titled ‘Gold Dream’

I, in retirement from lawyering, have oodles of timewhich can be used to let imagination run riot and producea picture rivalling’ Mackenna’s Gold’.

Commercial ventures in residential neighbourhoodsshould be curbed

Sir, A very dangerous trend is emerging in T. Nagar, wherein thecommercial complex owners, in a bid to expand their area ofoperation and quench their insatiable thirst to earn further, aretargeting the nearby residential dwellings.

The modus operandi is to lure the owners of the flats to selltheir property by offering them hefty amounts. Once they are ableto trap a few flat-owners to do so, they then deploy pressure tacticsto eject those who are hard nuts to crack.

Such are the crude methods employed that it becomes impossibleand intolerable for the strong willed ones to bear the brunt and theyfinally give up their fight.

An ordinance or in its place a Bill must be brought in by the StateGovernment so as to put a ‘cap’ on any kind of commercial devel-opment in residential colonies of T. Nagar. The shopping hub hasalready grown beyond its size and any further tinkering, at the costof its primary stake-holders, the residents, will only add to itsdeterioration.

This must be treated as an SOS from the hapless residents of T.Nagar who are already in dire straits due to excess commercializa-tion leading to poor sanitation, pollution and host of other civicissues.— K. Harihar, 20 Venkatesan Street, T. Nagar
