Old friend Krishna Menon retired from government ser-vice as Chief Probation Officer. Even before the farewellgourmet dinner had rejuvenated his non-official personalconstitution, he plunged into the uncharted ocean of lawfrom where he had, like our biblical prodigal son defected, seduced by the shiny Government nickel long years ago.The very next day after retirement he joined the law stableof G. Ramaswamy, who later became the AttorneyGeneral of India.

Menon and I became great friends in the said stable. After talking this and that in the stable, we would talk thatand this over the telephone, and that was the rub. Hishouse in St. Thomas Mount was built by God the momentthe Wright Brothers invented the aeroplane so that theflyer paid obeisance to his house before landing and takeoff.

I had to run up a mountainous bill trying to speak to himon phone in the din of the aeroplanes and so perhaps did he.One couldn’t hear a word until the machine died on thetarmac or escaped the city’s sky bubble. One could hearthe window glass panes rattle. Good thing that he shuffledoff the mortal coil some 25 years ago or I would be a deafman by now. And that was during the infancy of air travelin Madras before the dichotomy of the air port as Anna andKamaraj terminals.

Sleep, the salve of soul to the mosquito-devoured Cooumriver bank denizen and the 1,76,000 crore rupee heisters,is illustrated in dictionaries as ‘next to impossible’.Meenambakkam, as the crow flies, is about 7 kilometersfrom my house in Anna Nagar Western Extension. Somegoon in the Airport had ordained that the planes shouldstart their fell mission at around 3 a.m and fly directly overmy house. The turbulence probably can kill a millionmosquitoes, an innovation by the performing MayorSubramanian, but the weak of heart may instead dropdead.

I haven’t slept even up to the Brahma muhurtham thelast many years since expense account aristocrats con-quered this city. Mr,Freeloader, what’s the dashed hurry? Why don’t you wait till the sun is up? Last night one planealmost skimmed the terrace of my building and I shouted,“You son of a….”, but the juggernaut noise machine by thenwas above the world so high, immune to angry humannoise.

If Rabindranath Tagore had lived while the air- pirateswere as busy as the Somalian sea-pirates, he would nothave written Stanza 48 in his immortal Gitanjali that W.B.Yeats translated as “The morning sea of silence brokeinto ripples of bird song”.I pity our young children who haveto visit the Anna Zoo Aviary to see birds and with someluck, hear them sing! The day is not far when children inMadras would wonder what a sparrow looks like! Giantmetal birds have caused the extinction of Tagore’s birds.Or are the two hundred billion mosquitoes so lovinglyreared in the Metropolis, the mini suckers who, like Bot-tom, are translated?

She had been maintaining

the temple for 22 years. As the seized idol of

Demolished temple rebuilt on pavementBy Our Staff Reporter

A pavement temple onBazullah Road, T. Nagar, whichwas demolished by Corpora-tion workers in November lastyear, has been rebuilt by devo-tees 5 ft away from the originallocation.

But even the new location isstill on the pavement.

The kumbhabheeshekam ofthe rebuilt Sri VinnaitheerkumVinayagar Temple was per-formed last week.

Regular poojas are beingperformed now.

The temple was among thosedemolished following the Su-preme Court order againsttemples built on pavementsand other public areas.

Residents told MambalamTimes that the original templehad been built 30 years ago.

The new one was construc-ted in 3 days, they added.

They said that Corporationworkers came to demolish theold temple without notice butdevotees obtained two daystime to shift the idol before thestructure was demolished.

They said that the Corpora-tion claimed that notice hadbeen given for demolition ofseveral other pavement tem-ples in the area but this had notbeen done.

When it was pointed out thateven the new location was onthe pavement, they claimedthat Supreme Court order re-ferred only to temples whichare a hindrance to movementof pedestrians/vehicles.
