I thank you for thesame as I do not miss out on the local news andhappenings even though stationed thousandsof miles away. However, what I want to relatehere is my chance meeting with some persons

from T. Nagar during my morning walk. Ittranspired that they also read Mambalam Timesevery week online. This shows the popularity ofyour paper even abroad and wish to thank youfor providing this facility.

I am sure it must be having a wide coverageelsewhere also, particularly among deep rootedChennaites like me. P. K. Subramanian,Aishwarya Apartments, Gandhi Street, T.Nagar, Ph: 98402 93321

Temple encroaches on road junctionin Ashok Nagar

Sir, It was recently highlighted in a leadingdaily with a photo that a Vinayagar temple islocated in the middle of Raghav Reddy Roadand 11th Avenue junction in Ashok Nagar.

I wish to point out that a number of localresidents and Resident Associations have beenappealing to Chennai Corporation to remove/relocate the shrine for the past several yearsas it is causing hardship to motorists, espe-cially on auspicious days when the temple getscrowded, and the road margins also get blockedby the vehicles of the devotees.

No action has been taken all these years, and the temple is also being renovated now. While there are similar encroachments in manyparts of the city, most are small templesoccupying pavements. But this temple is al-most blocking half the road junction.

I hope that the officials concerned take quicksteps to remove the shrine from the junction.R. Elangovan, 11th Avenue, K.K. Nagar

Appeal to increase ceiling on SeniorCitizen Deposit Scheme

Sir, The present ceiling of Rs.15 lakhs perindividual under Senior Citizen Deposit Scheme(SCSS) was fixed some years back.

With the cost of living going up periodically,I request the Government to increase theceiling to Rs.25 lakhs without reduction in therate of interest. This will help many seniorcitizens to meet the increase in the cost ofliving, which includes high increase in the ex-penses like premium on mediclaim policies.

This will also dissuade senior citizens frominvesting in high risk investment plans forgetting higher returns.

Will the authorities concerned look into thisaspect? V. R. Sridhar, 23/11, VeerasamiStreet, West Mambalam, Ph: 98845 68963

Parking inhibits civic workunder Smart City projectBy Our Staff Reporter

While the work on the Pedestrian Plazaproject in Pondy Bazaar is in full swing, newpavements are also under construction underthe Smart City project in VenkatanarayanaRoad and G. N. Chetty Road.

On these two roads, drains are also underconstruction to make provision for laying stormwater drains and separate channels for utili-ties like EB and broadband cables so that thepavements or roads need not be dug for repairsor maintenance.

But the work is getting inhibited by parkingof vehicles on both sides of the road.

The authorities should enforce ‘No Parking’in locations where the drains are coming up tospeed up the work.

Colour stickers to mark buildingshaving rain harvesting

Corporation workers are pasting blue stick-ers outside buildings found to have rain waterharvesting systems.

Those which install the structure after therecent inspections will be given green stickersto help identify the old rainwater structuresand new ones. “So far we have not givenstickers of any colour to non-complying build-ings,” said a Corporation official.

He said that after inspecting 1.4 lakh inde-pendent houses and apartment complexes, and finding that 41,000 of them do not haverain water harvesting structures, Chennai Cor-poration started colour-coding buildings to dif-ferentiate the compliant ones from the others.

The colour coding will help it assess theprogress and achieve the goal.

“For those who do not have rain water har-vesting structures, we will provide technicaladvice and use Resident Associations to spreadawareness,” the official said.

Water table rises after recentrainsBy Our Staff Reporter

Groundwater levels have improvedmarginally in some parts of the city includingthis neighbourhood after the thundershowersin mid-July, according to a study by RainCentre, a voluntary organisation in the city.

The groundwater level in West Mambalamhas improved from a depth of 8.1 m in June to7.4 m in July.

According to the study, the recent showershave also arrested rapid depletion in thegroundwater table in areas such as T. Nagar.

A number of neighbourhood residents whohave wells or borewells, have stopped buyingwater from Metrowater or private tankersuppliers in the last couple of weeks.

Sekar Raghavan (Director, Rain Centre)said several residents are now ready to harnessrainwater as it mitigated water shortage.

3 Corporation School studentscreate portable voting system

Three students, Pradeep Kumar, M. V. Jebinand P. Jayachandar, of Pathipaga Chemmal K.Ganapathy Government Higher SecondarySchool (Kodambakkam) have created a portablebiometric voting system that can help voters toexercise their fundamental right anytime andanywhere. “This year’s election recorded thehighest voter turnout of 67.11%. We want toensure that the number is 100% and even thoseliving in remote villages and have troubleaccessing polling booths cast their votes usingthis machine,” said 14-year-old Pradeep (a Std. 10student). “We were brainstorming on scientificinventions that can help solve national issues. We thought of child safety, women’s safety, preserving water and then while following therecent assembly elections, we zeroed in on this,”said Jebin (studying in Std. 11). Unlike thetraditional method, where voters have to carryidentity documents, in this system they do nothave to. The system will be linked with an IOT(internet of things) software, which will in turnbe fed with the Aadhaar details of voters. All thata person has to do is get his/her fingerprints andretina scanned in the machine and cast his/hervote. The machine will not accept a second attemptto vote; it will show ‘already voted’.

The machine can be placed outside any publicoffice in any part of the country and can beaccessed by voters who live in far off places, butstruggle to get to the booths.
