TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 62After scripting many hits like ‘Ethirpaaraathathu’ (1954), ‘Amara

Deepam’(1956), ‘Maadhar Kula Manickam ‘(1956, adapted from thefamous Rabindranath Tagore novel, ‘Nauka Dubi’ (The Wreck),‘Uthamaputhiran’ (1958, adaptation of the noted Alexandre DumasFrench novel and successful Hollywood movie, ‘The Man In The IronMask’(1939), Sridhar graduated to film direction.

He joined the then newly formed film company Venus Pictures aspartner and directed his first film based on his own script ‘KalyanaParisu’ (1959, Tamil). A love triangle, it was a roaring successlaunching Sridhar as a filmmaker of merit and box-office potentialwith a slam-bang impact . It had Gemini Ganesh, multi-lingual topstar, B. Saroja Devi and talented actress - good in tragic andemotional roles - C. R. Vijayakumari in the main roles. Interestingly,a parallel comedy plot with the famed comedy star K. A. Thangaveluand M. Saroja (his wife in private life) proved a big hit with moviegoers. The audio cassettes of the comedy scenes ( known as ‘track’) proveda best-seller and continues to be popular even after fifty-plus yearstoday. An interesting sidelight on moviegoers’ tastes in India!

Sridhar soon promoted his own production unit ‘Chitralaya’ whichforged ahead to be a successful and noted film company with manyhits in its portfolio. He hit big time and created film history with ‘NenjilOar Alayam’ (1962, Tamil). Again a melodramatic love triangle, involving a doctor, his former sweetheart, and her sick husband, nowhis patient, the film had many interesting features. It was shot in theclaustrophobic sets of a private nursing home, and the indoor photog-raphy was brilliant with camera angles never before seen in SouthIndian Cinema. The man behind the camera was Aloysius Vincent, one of the finest ‘painters with light’ in Indian Cinema. The mainplayers were Kalyankumar, an import from Kannada Cinema andexcellent actor, a new face from the stage and soon to be star R.Muthuraman, and the star in the making C. A. Devika. The film wasshot in less than thirty days, a record for that day in Indian Cinemaand it raised many eyebrows! Another new find in the movie wasNagesh who later ruled over the Tamil Cinema as ace comedian andcharacter actor for over two decades.

Another major plus factor responsible for the enormous successof the film was the melodious music composed by the famous duoViswanathan-Ramamurthy. Many songs became hits and are re-membered and hummed to this day. After this sensational success,Sridhar forged ahead to be a force in Indian Cinema.

His major hits include ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ (1963, Hindi remake of ‘NenjilOar Alayam’), ‘Kathalikka Neramillai’ (1964, Tamil), ‘VenniraAadai’(1965, Tamil, which introduced the cult figure, clout-pluspolitical leader and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalithato Tamil Cinema. ), ‘Pyar Kiye Jaa’ (1966, Hindi remake of ‘ KathalikkaNeramillai’), ‘Urimai Kural’ (1974, Tamil), ‘Seetha GeethaDaatithey’(1977, Telugu) and several others.

‘Bhai Bhai’ was essentially a family melodrama of two brothers andthe interesting and unusual element was that it is the elder brotherwho goes astray abandoning his loving dutiful wife and the youngerbrother brings him back to even keel and to the family fold to livehappily thereafter. In India, especially in Hindu joint families, thefirst born eldest brother enjoys a special status and stature, and sodoes his wife. Once the father dies, the eldest brother becomes the‘pater familius’ and rules over the family. His word is law and othershave to implicitly follow him.

However, in recent years, with the break-up of the joint familysystem due to many reasons, sociological, economical, impact ofwestern culture, mores and life style and others, the situation isdifferent.
