LYONLyon is usually called the capital city of gastronomy. For along time, this was equated with sauces and apetit-bourgeois small town complex. But then the TGV highspeed train linked Lyon with Paris and Marseille. Olympiquede Lyon started to win League Championship after LeagueChampionship and a new Lyon was suddenly filled withdaring architecture, crowded cafes and avant gardeexhibitions.

THE CITY #THECITY#
© Anna Bryukhanova
There is water everywhere. And it flowsunder 28 bridges. Lyon is divided intodifferent areas by two rivers, the Saôneand Rhône, and two hills, La Croix-Rousseand Fourvière. In the west, by theFourvière hill, is the bustling, historic citycentre with its Renaissance pomp. It bearswitness to the riches that the city’sprofitable silk industry earned, followingFrançois the First’s tax reductions in 1536.In 43 BC, the Romans founded the capitalcity of the Gallic provinces on a peninsula,at the foot of La Croix-Rousse and in thearea around the Town Hall and the Opera,France’s most prominent architects andartists were given a free hand in the1990’s. The result was post-modernglamour: a rococo opera with a glassdome, a grand square with columns and 69water jets.
From the Town Hall and the Opera, themain shopping, restaurant and cafestreets, the rue de la République and ruePrésident Herriot extend in a north-southdirection. The Congress Center with the3,000 seat amphitheater built by RenzoPiano, the Contemporary Art Museum andInterpol sandwiched between the RhôneRiver and the Park de la Tête d’Or, are partof the business center on the left bank ofthe river.
The underground railway system isextensive - you seldom have to walk for
more than 15 minutes.

Lyon is the cradle of France. A café is firstand foremost something that is just there, waiting for the tired passer-by whohappens to walk that way. Shopping becomes deceptively relaxed in apedestrian-friendly city like Lyon. All you
have to do is to follow the pedestrian routealong the rue de la République and ruePrésident Edouard Herriot for your creditcard to become overheated. But onceagain: don’t forget that you are at the hubof the gastronomic galaxy. Failing to take afew samples home to taste would be agreat mistake.
Colette SibiliaLyon’s food halls are now housed in asexless concrete quarter erected in the1970’s. But what food! Colette and herdaughter probably offer the best curedmeats and provisions in France.
