Bing tuxedo / 1955 501® Jeans

In 1951, the world famous American crooner Bing Crosby was

denied entrance into a Canadian hotel because he and his

friend were dressed completely in denim. Although the Hotel

management eventually recognized Bing and made an exception

because of who he was, the story of the incident traveled fast.

Friends of his back home contacted Levi Strauss and Co. and

the designers immediately developed a custom denim tuxedo

jacket for Bing so that he would never have problems wearing

Levi’s® Jeans, even in fancy establishments. It was made of the

sturdy denim used for 501® Jeans, and decorated with a lovely

corsage of Red Tabs, held onto the lapel with a cluster of shiny

copper rivets. Inside the jacket was a huge leather patch printed

with a “Notice to All Hotel Men” stating that denim is a perfectly

appropriate fabric and anyone wearing it should be allowed

entrance into the finest hotels.

LS&Co presented the jacket to Bing at the 1951 Silver State

Stampede in Elko, Nevada where he was honorary mayor. He was

so tickled with the tux that he wore it to many press appearances

for his next film, “Here Comes the Groom.” The original jacket, as

well as one made for the town’s mayor, is in the Northeastern

Nevada Museum in Elko.

For Spring Summer 2014, Levi’s® Vintage Clothing is reproducing

this famous piece of Levi’s® history and making a limited run of

200 jackets. All of the details are true to the original.

Safely preserved in a vault deep inside our

headquarters in San Francisco lies an archive of

over 20,000 rare and unique examples of Levi’s®

clothing and artefacts dating back to as early as

1873. Kept at an even temperature and wrapped in

unbleached cotton, these delicate specimens are

carefully protected by the Levi’s® Historian and

strictly reserved for the use of our designers. Each

season, our team pores through the archives with

white-gloved hands, uncovering the secrets of our

past and then bringing them back into the world

through faithful reproductions that are as fresh

now as they were back then.

In 1939, the city of San Francisco hosted the

World’s Fair on man-made Treasure Island in the

middle of the San Francisco Bay.

LS&Co joined the hometown festivities by building

an all-electric mechanical rodeo. The futuristic

attraction featured 31 wooden puppets that were

carved in the likeness of real-life rodeo stars and

dressed in custom-made waist overalls, rodeo

shirts and hats.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of this far out

moment in the Brand’s history, Levis® Vintage

Clothing is reproducing a selection of the Levi’s®

Western Wear garments that were worn by the

puppets in the all-electric, mechanical rodeo.

How to

WASH, WEAR& CAREfor your

RIGID 501® JEANS

Page 36: LVC SS14 lb_lr

66 67

Keep ‘em RigidSome folks like to wear their rigid 501®s without washing. The wear effect on a true rigid jean will always give the most dramatic look. You can dry-clean, but that’s

only if you don’t mind chemicals being used on your denims. Some people spray vinegar when their jeans hang inside out to remove any odour. Some simply hang their jeans outside for a few days. Folding jeans into the freezer also does the same job.

If you don’t plan to wash your 501®s, buy one size smaller in the waist and true size for length. After a few wears the waist will stretch to your size.

-1

The following guidelines are considering law of averages

with our Levi’s® Vintage Clothing 501® jeans. Each denim

will shrink and skew in a slightly different way. Different

temperatures will also have an effect. The options for how

you wash, wear and care for your 501® jeans are vast.

It’s up to you to make your choice and stick to it.

Enjoy this journey and long-term love affair.

GET THE RIGHT FIT one that suits you best

WASH ‘em GOOd

DIP IN THE ‘TUB

If you prefer a thorough wash and simply don’t have the time for handwashing, wash inside out at 86° F / 30° C. Don’t tumble-dry: it’ll shrink too much. Dry in the

open air if you can, or hang them in a warm place until crispy dry. Long-term shrinkage will occur over several washes.

The very first time you wear your 501®s, climb into the bathtub and let them soak on your body for up to half an hour. Drain the tub, squeeze the excess water from

your legs then get outside in the sunshine to dry them into your shape. Otherwise, bend and stretch while wearing them indoors until you can carefully slip out of them and dry them over the back of a chair. When your jeans are dirty, simply climb back into the bathtub and wash with a little soap.

If you plan to wash your 501®s, buy two sizes bigger in the waist and length and wash to achieve your size.

+2

If you plan to shrink your 501®s in the bathtub, buy your true size in the waist but two sizes bigger in length. After shrinking in the bathtub, make sure to stretch the waist back out while still wet: this method will help achieve a slimmer silhouette.

In San Francisco, every day is disco. Seriously, girls and boys, life can get magical, just dig this strip for proof. Rudy and Kendall expected a chill day in the city, but fate – and their Levi’s® Vintage Clothing 1978 501® Castro shorts – had other plans. Check what happened when this dude and dudette rocked the Castro.

The Levi’s® Brand first used the Orange Tab on a line of affordable,

slim-fitting jeans, jackets and shirts designed for the Young

Americans of the 1960s and 70s. To this day, the Orange Tab is

synonymous with simple and clean design as well as the free and easy

spirit of the times.

Made in the USA exactly as it was when it was first introduced,

the Levi’s® Vintage Clothing Orange Tab Collection revives this family

of true American classics and offers it up to a new generation of rebels

and revolutionaries.
