FroM the DirectorWelcome to our annual report for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2009. This is where you will find information about our organizational operations, fiscal position, a summary of our past year’s activities, and a look to the future. We also acknowledge our loyal friends for their extraordinary generosity and invite our supporters to see how we use the gifts you entrust to us for the benefit of musicians, communities and churches.
This past year has been a strain for nonprofit organizations. At LMP, we were blessed by the staunch loyalty of generous donors who continued to include us in their charitable giving. You responded when we asked for help making up for the inevitable loss of gifts from those who simply could not renew their support. As the economy slowly recovers, your continued loyalty will be critically important.
Due to the timing of our fiscal year (October 1 to September 30), the bulk of our endowment losses were actually recorded in the previous fiscal year. Our funds recovered some of their losses during this fiscal year. That said, it is our intention not to draw earnings from the LMP endowment fund until the full value of the corpus is restored.
With the gap in revenue left by the absence of endowment earnings, careful financial management was required. Cuts to our national staff hours and the temporary elimination of four faculty positions at LSM, as well as cuts to other operating expenses, allowed us to end the year with a balanced budget.
Another contributing factor to our healthy fiscal position at year end was an unrestricted estate gift that we received after the passing of a long-time friend and supporter. I hope that the thoughtful planning of recently-passed friends will inspire you to consider including LMP in your own estate plans. You can ensure the vitality of our mission and work for years to come.
Looking to the future of LMP is more exciting than ever. In November 2009, our board of directors and staff began a strategic planning process and found clarity of mission, renewed passion for our work, and an expanded vision for the impact we want to have. In the coming months, this will expand into a full-blown strategic plan that will guide our work and focus our efforts. For now it is exciting to share with you what we affirmed:
The MISSION of LMP is to transform lives and connect people through faith and music.
The three VALUES we embrace are musical excellence, Lutheran faith, and a nurturing community.
Our VISION is to see churches and communities renewed through music for the sake of the world.
As a reader of this annual report, I suspect that you are one of those individuals who cares deeply about these statements. We look forward to working with you, to being good stewards of the gifts you entrust to us, and to making a real difference for young people and all those who care about the rich musical heritage of the Lutheran church. Thank you for your past support and for remaining with us on this wonderful journey!

Lutheran Music Program | 3
FroM the presiDent2009 – a year of change at Lutheran Music Program. Yet, in the midst of change, core values remain intact and are getting stronger.
You’ll notice one change by the signature at the bottom of this message: a new President of the Board of Directors. After years of yeoman service in which he presided over LMP’s 25th anniversary and the hiring of Beth Burns as Executive Director, David Leege stepped down as President. I was honored and humbled to be elected to succeed him. Dave’s will be big shoes to fill and I pledge to do my best. Dave remains on the Board and we continue to value his wise counsel.
Another change was the relocation of 2009 Lutheran Summer Music to Luther College after three wonderful years at Gustavus Adolphus College. We knew that Gustavus hospitality would be hard to beat, but Luther rolled out the red carpet for our students and faculty and made LSM 2009 truly memorable. We are pleased that LSM 2010 will also be at Luther and we look forward to an even more productive relationship with our good friends in Decorah.
A welcome change was the improvement, be it ever so slight, in LMP’s finances. Due to prudent investing, our endowment out-performed both the Dow and the S&P 500. Due to careful fiscal management and the heart-warming generosity of you, our donors, LMP ended the fiscal year with a modest budget surplus and a cash reserve with which to cushion the down times. 2009 was a difficult year, but thanks to the faithfulness of LMP’s friends and supporters, we are poised to grow in 2010.
The most significant change this year was the clarification of LMP’s vision, mission and core values. We always knew that LMP “transforms lives and connects people through faith and music;” but we have now made that phrase our mission. When read together with our vision and statement of core values, this mission has energized both board and staff and set LMP on a path to renewing churches and communities through music for the sake of the world.
Your past support assures LMP that you will continue to do whatever you can to sustain this worthy institution in 2010. We cherish, celebrate and deeply thank you for your continued support.

Musicianship Curriculum – Thanks to a
commissioning project in honor of founding board
member and renowned composer Dr. Carl Schalk,
the ’09 students became the first to use our new
musicianship curriculum written by Dr. Brooke Joyce.
This unique curriculum teaches the fundamentals
of music by drawing on teaching examples from our
Lutheran hymnals.
Dr. Schalk has had a profound impact on LSM since
its earliest years, and this year was no different.
We embraced a new tradition at LSM, having
commissioned Schalk to compose a song for us to
sing each morning. Based on Luther’s Morning Prayer, Schalk’s “Morning Blessing” took root in every
person at LSM and is already a treasured ritual. To
hear the 2009 LSM community singing the “Morning
Blessing,” visit www.lutheransummermusic.org.
Composer in Residence – Dr. Brooke Joyce did
double duty at LSM by also serving as the 2009
Composer in Residence. With our second year of
funding from the MetLife Meet the Composer
program, Joyce taught composition workshops, led a
community-wide hymn writing project, and oversaw
the world premiere of his Veni, Veni, Emmanuel
performed by the LSM Festival Orchestra and Choir
Intentionally founded as a program without walls, the Lutheran Summer Music Academy
& Festival continued its tradition of rotating to a new host campus in 2009. Luther College
in Decorah, Iowa will be home to LSM through 2011, and 2009 was a reminder as to how
well-suited this college is for our program’s needs. Luther’s outstanding music facilities
and performance spaces, idyllic rural setting, and the warm and welcoming residents of
Decorah, Iowa all laid the groundwork for a successful and rewarding summer.

Joyce’s world premiere was just one way our 2009
worship theme—Always Advent—was illuminated
and explored. Chaplain Wayne Weissenbuehler and
the LSM worship team led students through the
season of expectation and anticipation through
music, texts, sermons, bible studies, chaplain chats,
dorm devotions, and even a culminating Christmas
celebration in the student dormitory.
Student, faculty and parent surveys all confirm that
LSM 2009 was an outstanding musical, spiritual and
personal experience. While the economy took its
toll on enrollment and we fell short of our minimum
enrollment goal of 150 students, we did beat national
averages for attendance declines at summer youth
camps and welcomed 133 students and 10 college
interns to LSM. Fifty of these students came to us
through the flourishing Young Musicians Partnership
(see page 8). With fewer students and reduced
revenues, we brought four fewer faculty artists to
LSM in 2009. Looking ahead amidst still challenging
times, enrollment is tracking toward budgeted goals
and a fully-restored faculty is ready to serve our
students when we return to Luther College from June
20 to July 18 for LSM 2010.

the Young Musicians partnershipThis past summer, over one third of LSM students came from congregations enrolled in the Young Musicians Partnership (YMP). The Young Musicians Partnership is a unique opportunity for congregations to join with Lutheran Music Program in a core commitment to transform lives and connect people through faith and music. To enroll, congregations need only to establish a local scholarship toward attendance at LSM, which has proven in many current YMP-enrolled congregations to ignite the spark in their young people. This has led to more refined musical skills, more conscious connection between music and worship, and more motivation for youth to share their gifts within the church. Lutheran Music program extends a 10% tuition discount to all YMP youth and a 33% match to the congregational scholarship, completing the circle of support for gifted musicians to grow both musically and spiritually. Through the YMP, students are–in a very real way–called to LSM through the support of their churches, equipped and empowered in their musical gifts, and sent to serve in their congregations and communities.
During LSM 2009, the 50 students from YMP congregations were invited to talk with each other about what worship is and the role of music within it. Students expressed deep passion and connection to worship. One student described worship as “a time to express joyful noise to God, recognizing God’s grace and worshipping Him.” Reflecting on the role of music, another student said, “Music helps people to connect with God on a higher level than words.” It was also clear that these youth saw themselves as vital contributors in worship at their home congregations. Though a new initiative, the YMP has already created a very tangible way for LSM to serve as an extension of a congregation’s music ministry that will only continue to grow.
While the list grows daily, here are the 2008-2009 YMP Congregations:Lutheran High School of Orange County, Orange, CA • First Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs, CO • St. Armands Key Lutheran Church, Sarasota, FL • Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Sarasota, FL • First Lutheran Church, Decorah, IA • Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Vinton, IA • Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, Freeburg, IL • Faith Lutheran Church, Glen Ellyn, IL • Lutheran Church of the Holy Spirit, Lincolnshire, IL • Walther Lutheran High School, Melrose Park, IL • Grace River Forest, River Forest, IL • Trinity Lutheran Church, Peoria, IL • Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, Freeburg, IL • St. John Lutheran Church, Woodstock, IL • Faith Lutheran, Bloomington, IN • Immanuel Lutheran, Valparaiso, IN • Carmel Lutheran Church, Carmel, IN • St. John Lutheran Church, Lake Charles, LA • Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Westboro, MA • Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Woburn, MA • Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, McHenry, MD • Trinity Lutheran Church, Grand Rapids, MI • St. Lorenz Lutheran, Frankenmuth, MI • Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, St. Paul, MN • All Saints Lutheran Church, Cottage Grove, MN • Hope Lutheran Church, Walker, MN • First Lutheran Church, St. Peter, MN • Mt. caMp lutherwooD 2009 choral caMpLast summer LMP provided staff and music instruction for a junior high camp centered in choral music at Camp Lutherwood in Bellingham, WA. Dr. Rachel Root, chair of the Music & Worship Department at Trinity Lutheran College, served as the camp’s conductor. Students spent the mornings and early evenings in choral rehearsal, then enjoyed all the camp fun and Bible study led by the Lutherwood staff. The week culminated in a performance for parents and friends of Lutherwood which featured Vivaldi’s Gloria. The camp will continue in 2010 at the end of August.

giFt oF a liFetiMeMarcella Poppen’s career in music education and church music spanned over 60 years and across two continents. A native of northwest Iowa, Dr. Poppen held degrees from the Eastman School of Music, the University of Oregon, and the Indiana University School of Music. She served as a missionary in Japan and taught at public schools, colleges, and universities across the country. Throughout her lifetime, Dr. Poppen combined these secular education positions with her vocation as a church organist and choir master – serving congregations in New York, Minnesota, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Iowa.
Dr. Poppen supported Lutheran Music Program for more than a decade until she passed away last spring. Her estate plans included a bequest for the LSM Scholarship Fund and she requested that memorials be given to the same. We are thankful for Dr. Poppen’s generosity and for the donors who made gifts in her memory:

Every year, individuals like Dr. Poppen include Lutheran Music Program in their estate plans. Our Amen Circle honors donors who have made planned gifts – including will bequests, life insurance beneficiary designations, charitable remainder trusts, donor advised funds, etc. Planned gifts make a significant difference to us and membership in the Amen Circle is a thoughtful way to establish a legacy, teach children and grandchildren the value of philanthropy, and ensure that this life-changing program continues to thrive.

congregations we serve. Grant activities have included a
membership survey of the Association of Lutheran Church
Musicians and a roundtable discussion with 2009 LSM students
about participation in worship. Our study of YMP congregations
will continue into 2010. We are excited to use what we learn
to create a resource kit for churches which will include best
practices for involving students in the musical life of their home
congregations. Ultimately, this project will help us create a
more comprehensive YMP, one that goes beyond meeting
scholarship needs to truly lift up the gifts of our young people.
And, finally, many donors chose to join our newly-created
“Choir of Angels,” our group of engaged supporters
whose annual contributions exceed $1,000. Through renewed
support and new membership, we look forward to adding to
the number of voices in the Choir in 2010, and to getting to
know this very special and dedicated group better through
events and other opportunities. To learn more about the
Choir, call 888.635.6583.
