Egerstrom House :At 62 years old, in 1964, the Mexican architect Luis Barragan starts the project of one of his most representative works, the Fountain of the Lovers Subdivision located within the Clubs, in the municipality of Atizapan in the State of Mexico. This work is part of a major intervention, associated within the same project to the Cuadra San Cristóbal (stables) and Egerstrom House, designed by him to a community of riders. The complex, completed in 1969, became a symbol of his work by the impeccable use of water, geometric abstraction of the different planes and color , recurring elements in his career.

The source is one of the spaces for public use within the project. This should be a stay for riders and their horses, but was designed specifically as a trough for animals, not as a decorative fountain. Barragan describes it: "the depth of the pond calculated for passing the horse, we got the water to the belly."

Water use is characteristic of his work and influence of Mexican colonial architecture. But it goes beyond the wells and aqueducts of the haciendas and convents, and designed as independent sculptures of water, which can maintain their visual appeal and space, without having to be in operation.

The rider enters through a side access framed by the large pink wall, then down to the pool on the horse, which is immersed in water. This situation occurs accompanied by the sound of water, falling like a waterfall from the aqueduct well supported on another wall of the same material. Thus, the water appears calm and moving, changing.

The Cuadra San Cristóbal, where the stables are arranged, is located 80 meters (approx.) of the source, but form a single project by the similar treatment of the elements

and programmatic relationship. The game that paradoxically emphasizes pink tones rather abstract geometry of the walls and the presence of water, the binding being read

as a single space

The total is then displayed together with a strongly expressive. As a stage show that waits for input of the rider, the abstraction of the elements contrasts with its strong colors and the thickness of the walls gives depth to the openings and porches hint at its true neighboring gardens and make it appear the sky. The compositional play between blind walls and perforated generate an experience, and this is accentuated by the sound of moving water, soil without pavements and smells of vegetation chosen by the same architect.

As in several of his works, the spaces created by Luis Barragan seem timeless, at rest. In this work generates a rather closed outside, is a meeting place for reflection but created lonely and always open to the sky. The way of inhabiting the space is defined in this intimate way, and finally the fountain was designed by the architect to be crossed only by a horse and rider.
