Lucca A pearl of Tuscany
The Amphitheatre Square
was built on the ruins of an
ancient Roman
amphitheatre, as we can see
from its elliptical shape.
The walls are the best
example in Europe of walls
built according to the
principles of modern
defensive works. They are
long about 4 km and 450 m.
On the walls there is a 4 km long promenade.
San Martino is
Lucca’s Gothic-
Romanesque
Cathedral.
The Temple of the Holy Face is a small
octagonal dome. Inside there is the Holy
Face, a wooden Crucifix
The sarcophagus of Ilaria del Carretto,
Paolo Guinigi’s wife, is placed inside
San Martino.
The basilica of St. Frediano is one of the oldest churches in Lucca.
The Guinigi Tower is one of
the few left in the city centre
and one of the most
representative of Lucca. Its
main feature is a grove of
holms on its top.

During the “Risorgimento”
writers and artists used
to go to this café.
