January has kept us busy at Frechette both in and out of the cold. We continue to engage in deep learning and thinking about our school goals with our ongoing work in Mental Health, Equity, Modern Learning, Mathematics and the Environment. Youth Speak visited our school this month and spoke to students in Grades 5 to 8 about their personal experiences, strategies and resources on how to cope with feelings of stress. Our Youth Voice team presented mini-lessons to all of our classes on how to recognize our feelings and things we can do to support our mental well being and our Healthy Schools team continue to promote healthy food choices with their weekly snack program. In the older grades, we are exploring the vertical classroom; a different way of approaching problem solving and cooperative learning and are excited about the impact and response we see from our learners, staff and students alike! Our athletic teams continue to experience success as they thrive and excel under the direction of our dedicated coaches, who are tireless in their efforts to nurture sportsmanship, develop ‘personal bests’ and a sense of school pride, in all of our athletes and students. Congratulations to our Junior Mixed Volleyball team on winning the Area Tournament and proceeding to the Regional competition. On February 14th, the term one report card will be coming home. This report provides a good opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss your child’s learning. As you read your child’s report card, you could support your child in his or her learning by asking what goals s/he might need to set and how you can support his/her learning in partnership with the teacher. We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to ‘save the date!’ for our upcoming Carnaval Open House week February 19th to 22nd. Our families are invited to join us in the variety of activities planned for this week. The school and classes will be open for visits at various times throughout each day. Also during Carnaval week, we have organized two skating excursions on the 19th and 21st. All students are invited to participate. Homeroom teachers will be sharing further details in upcoming communications about both the Open House and the Skating date for their class. We are looking forward to some winter fun! With the colder winter weather, we remind all families that bus cancellations mean there is no lunch program for that day but, depending on the temperature, may mean we will still have outdoor recess. Students need to be dressed appropriately for the weather. We also remind families that students are not dropped off at school prior to 9:05 a.m. Supervision duty begins at 9:05 a.m. Students dropped off prior to this time are not supervised by school staff. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming School Council meeting on Wednesday, February 20th at 7:00 p.m. We wish to thank the School Council for their generosity and support as we get ready to reveal our very own Bonhomme costume during Carnaval week and to enjoy some skating at our local arena. French Immersion Registration FI registration began on January 18, 2019 and will end on February 8, 2019. Parents or guardians of Senior

Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2019, and wishing to enrol in the FI Program, can visit or call

their current school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be

signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identifica-

tion showing their address to the designated FI program location to register between January 18 and February 8, 2019. This

eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrollment information or to pre-register. YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will

enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or

Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our

schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI

education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More

information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require

facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow

while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school

other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

Message From Our Trustee Happy 2019! I hope your holiday season was festive, and your vacation restful. I like to welcome this season with renewed en-

thusiasm, seeing it as a time for reflection at the year ahead, building upon our accomplishments of the past.

I am honoured to not only serve as your trustee, but also as Budget Chair, where I will work tirelessly to ensure that resources

are directed to areas that best serve students and the continual improvement of public education. We have exciting initiatives in

the works. The new Board of Trustees is filled with a varied set of skills and experience, driven to bring forward innova-

tive ideas to York Region District School Board.

Schools are our children’s home away from home; in recent months I’ve had the opportunity to visit our schools, and see the

wonderful work being done by our teachers and staff members. I’ve spoken with parents and teachers about ways we can collec-

tively improve educational outcomes and support the priorities in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Strategic Plan:

Foster well-being and mental health

Build collaborative relationships

Champion equity and inclusivity

Empower ethical leadership

In the upcoming months, I will continue to engage with principals, school councils, parents and students about our journey

ahead. Each and every individual’s insights are invaluable to strengthening our education system, and I look forward to achiev-

ing our goals together.

I’m always happy to hear your thoughts - and you can join the conversation on Twitter @david4thornhill.

Warmest regards,

David Sherman

Primary Play - Une promesse, c'est une promesse This spring, the grade 3s will be presenting the musical play "Une promesse, c'est une

promesse," based on the book by Robert Munsch and Michael Kusugak. Grade 2 students

are welcome to join the choir. All of the parts have been cast and rehearsals will start the

first week of February. The actors have been divided into 4 casts, which will perform

over two evenings (two performances per evening) in May. A letter with more infor-

mation will go home in February. Congratulations to all the participants!

MESSAGE FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS ABOUT LUNCHES Nutrition and healthy eating is as important to health as it is to learning. Unfortunately, there are many children arriving at school with no food or not enough food to eat, or the lunch that they ordered is

not served that day. Please ensure that you mark the date for all your child/children’s lunches so they have sufficient food and

snacks to make it through the school day if their lunch is not served that day. We have a number of students coming into the of-

fice requesting lunch and/or snacks on a daily basis. We also have students who come into the office complaining that they do

not like their lunch or they do not have enough to eat. Please talk to your child/children about what they like to eat and the im-

portance of eating what they have in their lunch. The current lunch session ends and the new one begins as follows:

Pizza lunch last day, this session (because of inclement weather) will be April 1st. New session begins April 8th.

Tuesday lunch last day is March 26th. New session begins April 2nd.

Wednesday lunch last day is March 27th. New session begins April 3rd.

Thursday lunch last day is March 28th. New session begins April 4th.

Friday lunch last day is March 29th. New session begins April 5th. These dates may change due to inclement weather. Please remember that when we have an inclement weather day and buses are cancelled the hot lunches will also be cancelled.

Please remember to pack a snack, water bottle and lunch for your child/children on those days. Please feel free to contact the office if you need support in this matter.

SKATING DAYS AHEAD!

Get your skates and helmets ready—we are going skating on February 19th and 21st

at Garnett A. Williams Arena!

Please make sure that your child has skates and a proper helmet as they are mandatory

and will not be able to skate without them. Students who will be staying at school will

have planned activities. Permission forms will be available on school cash on line soon. Thank you again to our School Council Fundraising Committee for all their help in

co-ordinating and funding this terrific and fun event.

During the month of January, the students at Frechette participated in the Maker Space Stations provided by the York Region Public Libraries. It was great to see the students so engaged in creating and collaborating. The

students explored ozobots, snap circuits, osmo, Ipads with the program quiver (augmented reali-ty) and google cardboard (virtual reality). We hope to continue this partnership with future projects. Mme Genova-Facchinelli Teacher-Librarian

JUNIOR CO-ED VOLLEYBALL TEAM

The 2018/2019 Junior Co-ed Volleyball Team has been busy with a number of tournaments!

On Monday January 28th, Fréchette participated in the Junior Volleyball Area Finals Tour-

nament. The team played quite a few games and were undefeated and won first place, which means a pen-

nant for our school! On Thursday January 31st, the Junior Team played against multiple schools at the Re-

gional Finals at Armadale P.S. After playing through many tough games, they made it to the Semi-Finals.

With such a strong group of kids and a tough fight, Fréchette won 4th place overall! Congratulations to the

Junior Team since they are now top 4 in all of York Region! We are so proud of the team and the hard work

they put into this season! See you next year! Coaches: M. Wayling and Mme Khan “Sharks, Sharks ooh ha ha!”

WINTER CARNIVAL Fréchette is hosting a Winter Carnival to celebrate French culture and engage in a

variety of learning experiences that will enhance the students‛ appreciation of the

French language, French Canadian traditions and celebrations. Our Carnival will be held from Tuesday, February 19th and continues through to

Friday, February 22nd. The week will be fun and informative for parents/guardians

who will come to visit and we look forward to a fun-filled week for everyone. More

information will follow.

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ INTERMEDIATE BASKETBALL TEAMS Since December, the boys’ and girls’ intermediate basketball teams have been training several times a week. Before school, after school and at most recesses, the gym was full of athletes striving to do their best. February will be a very busy month for our teams who will be playing in many after-school tournaments. The Area Final for girls will take place on February 20 and for the boys, February 22. If they do well, the Regional Finals should be held the first week of March. Good luck to both teams! Every member of our teams deserve much recognition for their dedication, hard work and support of one another over the past two months. Thanks to our great coaches as well! Coaches: M. Durand and M. Deschenes

BADMINTON TEAM Badminton will be coming up in March and students will be trying out for the team. Good luck

Here’s what Your Healthy Schools Committee is working on:

My Healthy Lunch Challenge

Some classes have participated in the healthy lunch challenge in January. They packed healthy lunches with fruits and veggies and cut back on processed foods. Students tracked their eating in a food log. Eating well makes you feel better and gives you energy to have a great day! You’re the Chef After March break, we will start planning another three sessions of You're The Chef. Stay tuned for dates and details!

Valentine's Day Ideas

Think outside the box and make some yummy yet healthy treats for your Valentine. Try some chocolate covered strawberries or other fruit, or a dark chocolate fondue with fresh fruit. Try alternating cherry tomatoes and

mini boconcini on a little skewer for healthy Valentine snack. Cherries, pomegranate, raspberries, and any other red fruit is sure to make them feel the love! Have a Happy Valentine's Day!

Play Program

The Play Program will start up again after March Break. Encourage your child to find the grade 6 Play

Leaders at recess, between the portables and grade 1 doors, to play some fun games!

The Big Crunch

The Big Crunch will take place Friday, March 8th. Classes will meet in the gym and take a bite out of

their delicious and healthy apples, all at the same time!

Meetings

Next meeting: Monday February 5 at 8:45 a.m.

Any questions or to volunteer please contact Mme Trevisan at her email: [email protected] .

Eco-Schools Fun to Watch For In February! Boomerang Lunch @ Fréchette! As you know, since our school has earned Platinum status for several years in a row, we have been invit-

ed to participate in the Experienced Eco-School Certification Cycle (EECC). Throughout December and

January, our Senior Eco members busily researched and planned 4 dynamic Eco-team displays that were

posted and promoted around the school. They researched wasteful environmental practices such as,

Water Consumption, Clothing Manufacturing, Food Waste and Air Pollution. Look around the school

throughout the month to see all of their hard work! Our Junior members have begun filming short vide-

os to teach our younger students how to sort garbage, recycling and compost. Boomerang lunches are

still in effect, let's keep it up!

DROPPING OFF YOUR CHILDREN IN THE MORNING If you are dropping your children off in the morning, please drop off on Conley Street. If it is after

9:20am, you may park your car on Conley and walk your child into the school to sign him/her in. If

your child is being dropped off at school prior to the morning bell, then they must wait outside

unless the temperature is too cold, in this case, they will enter at 9:05 am. There is no supervision

in the school prior to the bell. Supervision starts at 9:05. Please note that FOR THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS, the front bus loop is closed

from 9:00am to 9:20am. Please do not enter the school parking lot from the south side. We previously allowed parents/guardians to drop off in the bus loop after 9:17 am but if our buses are running late, we

need to keep the bus loop closed until 9:20 or until all the buses have arrived and/or until all the children are safely in-

side the school. Please do not wait until the buses have left to drop off your child, by that time they are already late. It has become very dangerous in our school parking lot as parents/guardians enter the school parking lot from the south

side and then are not able to exit as more parents/guardians enter behind them. Children are running out of the cars and

crossing in front of moving buses. The buses have difficulty exiting. The safety of our children--all of our children--comes first. We understand that for some

people this may be an inconvenience, but the safety of our children is our main concern and the priority. Thank you in advance.

SNOW SAFETY It’s time to remind EVERYONE again about snow safety. Students are instructed to leave the snow on the

ground. That includes staying off the slippery snow hills too. Any student who throws snow or ice will receive

immediate consequences! We are also having issues with students sliding on the ice, falling and hurting them-

selves and we are asking that students not slide on the ice. Thank you for helping us to ensure that our children

play safely. Our teachers and school assistants work hard to encourage safe play and appreciate your support.

YOUTH VOICE On Thursday, January 31st, our Youth Voice group (comprised of grade 7-8 students) creat-ed and delivered lessons to all classes in our school on the topic of Mental Well-Being. The age appropriate lessons touched on questions such as: Can you name emotions? How do you handle your emotions? What can different emotions look like on the outside and on the in-side? What does it mean to be "mentally healthy"? The students engaged in fun activities. In the end we learned that we all have a range of emotions and that is healthy!

Math is everywhere! The beginning of the year is a great time to start building routines at home which can support children in developing a positive disposition towards math.

Providing opportunities at home that promote math talk can support a child’s mathematical knowledge and understanding. Whether you are, shopping, cooking, playing a game, organizing, taking a walk, or reading, there are many

opportunities to highlight math in different ways.

Copy the link below to read further information about how you can help your child have a greater understanding of math and how to make it fun.

Re: Student Bussing Eligibility Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son’s/daughter’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680: • All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation. • All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation. • All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.ca. For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

BEING LATE DOES MATTER? Getting to school – every day and on time – is very important. Unfortunately, there are still many students who arrive late everyday. Learning occurs dai-ly, right from the start of class. By establishing patterns early on (i.e. by being punctual and responsible) children acquire positive habits about school attendance. Some other things to consider

If children are late arriving to school, they miss important social time with their peers before school be-gins.

Students who are late often feel embarrassed or self-conscious. Late arrivals disrupt the routine of the classroom. A last-minute rush can be stressful for the child, and get him/her to school in the wrong frame of mind. Missing even five or ten minutes of the day can make it harder for a student to understand the material

being taught. Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a child’s skills and knowledge base and can cause the child to fall

behind peers and decrease self-esteem. Too many missed school days can increase isolation as the child stands out from his/her classmates and

misses opportunities to develop socially. Absenteeism makes it tougher for the child to develop a good rapport with the teachers. TIPS FOR BEING ON TIME The morning can be a very hectic time. Here are some effective tips for getting your child up and out the door on time. Get your child to bed at a reasonable hour. Set realistic and consistent schedules and rules at home. Getting ready for school should be part of the

child’s overall routine; something that’s expected of him/her every day. Do whatever is necessary the night before to save time in the morning, such as setting out clothes, packing lunches, and setting backpacks at the door. Create a set morning routine that your child can easily follow (i.e. washing hands and face, going to the bathroom, dressing, making the bed, brushing teeth, and eating a healthy breakfast). Avoid any distractions that can slow your child down, like TV or games.

EXTRA CHANGE OF CLOTHES AT SCHOOL So far it has been a wet winter, and when the field is not covered in snow , it is very wet

and muddy. Children love to play in the snow, mud and in the puddles and will get a little

dirty and wet doing that, sometimes wetting socks and pants. Please provide your child/children with a

change of clothes in a plastic bag (including, sweater, undershirt, pants, underpants and socks). Adding a ex-

tra pair of socks and mitts in a bag will help as well and will avoid a call home. The bag should be clearly

marked with his/her name on it. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

Every February, Canadians are invited to take part in the

festivities, celebrations and events that honour the legacy

of Canadians of African Heritage, past and present.

This is a time to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of

Canadians of African descent, who, throughout history, have contributed to make

Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation we know

and enjoy today.

February 6th, 2019 is Winter Walk Day!

Winter Walk Day is celebrated by schools across Canada on the first Wednesday of February

each year. Walking and wheeling to and from school is fun every day, so we encourage you to

journey outside throughout the entire month of February!

Schools can visit http://ontarioactiveschooltravel.ca/winter-walk-day/ to plan and promote a day

for your school community. There are posters, activities and more! Let us know if you are interest-

ed in participating so we can support you! If interested please contact Reena Mistry

Did you know that behaviours leading to heart disease begin in childhood and adoles-

cence? In recent years, we are even seeing high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and

high cholesterol in young children! We can reverse this alarming trend by taking steps to help prevent heart disease right

at home. In fact, the risk for heart disease can be reduced by 50 per cent when we cre-

ate healthier lifestyle habits such as not smoking or being exposed to second-hand

smoke, increasing physical activity levels and making healthier food choices. Why not celebrate Heart Month by choosing to enhance one of these lifestyle habits

in your home? Your family members’ hearts will thank you for it!

NO NUTS OR BY PRODUCTS PLEASE:

Please refrain from sending any products that may contain nuts or nut by

-products to school. Please check the labels on food products that you

send to school with your child, you put children at serious risk when you

send food products into the school that are not made in a nut-free envi-

ronment. Thank you for continuing to help us keep all children safe at

school.

Safety on Conley St. After School

Your child’s safety is important to us! We would like to remind parents that

children should not be crossing Conley unless accompanied by an adult. Chil-

dren should enter vehicles from the sidewalk side of the vehicle, not on

the road side, to avoid moving traffic. All parents/guardians who are picking up their students on Conley St. at the end of the day

are reminded that they can only park on the south side of Conley street. Parking on the

north side is against traffic laws because it impedes traffic flow and causes a potentially

dangerous situation for all concerned. Parents cannot pull into private driveways or block

access to them nor should they be making three-point turns during this busy time. The police

do come out and will be ticketing those who contravene these traffic laws. Children should be picked up promptly at 3:50pm. Children not picked up after

3:50pm will be escorted to the front office to wait there. Please be reminded that our office

closes at 4:30pm.

Picking Up Your Child/ren

If you wish to pick up your child during the lunch time, please pick up your child by 1:10pm. If you wish to pick up your child after lunch, please pick up your child after 2:20 pm. We are not able to go out on the yard to look for your child when he/she is outside for the recess portion of

the lunch. Thank you in advance for your co-operation.

Student Transportation Services of York Region

320 Bloomington Road West

Aurora, Ontario L4G 0M1

905-713-2535

FAX: 905-713-2533

Web site: www.schoolbuscity.com

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation arrangements. Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipi-tation, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast. Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans

and taxis will not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather may not be affecting all mu-nicipalities in York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educa-tional programs. Students attending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus ser-vice using a municipality or zone methodology.

When bus service is cancelled all school tests and/or examinations will be cancelled and re-

scheduled.

Student trips involving the use of school buses will also be cancelled.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their children to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled.
