Administrators’ Message: At Fréchette we continue to actively pursue and develop our school improvement goals. This month, many of our pursuits were focused on our comprehensive math program, our Eco Schools and our Healthy schools initiatives.

On April 27th, our Eco Team participated in the Building Nature Con-nections Eco-Fair. Our teachers and student leaders facilitated activi-ties at this community event, hosted by Bakersfield Public School. The Eco Team hosted our annual Earth Day and Big Crunch assembly and students had the opportunity to do their part to clean up the planet with school wide participation in the annual 20-minute makeover event. The Eco-Team works tirelessly to promote environmental awareness and has several exciting projects on the go for the remainder of the school year. We are working towards yet another Platinum certification.

Our Healthy Schools team organized our annual Jump Rope for Heart event. The weather was perfect. Spring is definitely here. We thank the community for their support of this fundraiser. We have also launched our Healthy Snack program. Once a week Healthy Schools student ambassadors deliver a healthy snack to each class. Each stu-dent is invited to take a snack and ‘leftovers’ are available in the office. The response from the students has been very positive. Thank you to our Healthy Schools Team for their commitment.

Our teachers continue to be engaged in professional learning opportu-nities to support student learning needs. During the month of April, Grade Teams had the opportunity to explore a variety of Math puzzles and games. We are very committed to building our capacity in Mathe-matics and to deepening student engagement in math through the use of puzzles and games.

From May 1st to May 19th, all families in York Region are invited to participate in the School Climate Survey. Details about the survey are shared in this newsletter and more information will be sent home with students on May 1st. At Fréchette, we are looking forward to and ap-preciate as much participation from our community as possible. The information gathered is valuable and supports us in setting goals for improvement. Please take some time to provide your input and give us feedback through this survey. Thank you.

Between the dates of May 24th and June 1st, our grade 3 and 6 stu-dents will be writing the province-wide EQAO tests. If interested, par-ents/guardians can access resources at the EQAO website www.eqao.com. Details will be shared as the test dates approach.

Chess Club

(Le Club d'Echecs) is con-

expert, alone or with friends.

EQAO for Grades 3 and 6

From May 24th to June 5th, students in grade 3 and 6, will participate

in the Education Quality Accountability of Ontario province-wide test-

ing, known as EQAO. These tests provide the Ministry of Education

and the public with critical information about how children are per-

forming in Language Arts and Mathematics. The data from these tests

help us move forward with our school improvement initiatives. You can support your child and the process by avoiding

appointments and absences during these times, ensuring that your

child is well rested and by providing healthy snacks. More information about EQAO can be found on their website:

Our Grade 8 Graduation will take place on the evening of Tuesday, June 20, 2017 in our gymnasium. More information will go out to parents/guardians soon.

Waterloo Gauss Contest From the world of Math ... We are very excited to announce that

144 Fréchette students in Grade 7 and 8 will participate in this

year's International Waterloo Gauss Math Competition, sched-

uled for May 10, 2017. All students will receive a certificate for

their participation. Certificates of Distinction will also awarded for

those who achieve within the top 25% of the school. As well, the

top performers from each grade with receive special certificates for

Outstanding Achievement. We look forward to

another successful competition this year!

“Journée Chic” As the warm weather approaches, we have another fun spirit day to welcome spring! We invite all to participate in "Journée Chic" : a day to dress up in our best on Tuesday, May 9th ! We'd love to see everyone decked out in their fancy shoes, blazers, dresses, fancy hats, ties... you name it!

Dance Team

On April 27th, the intermediate dance team competed in the 14th annual

York Region District School Board Step Out dance competition. They

won second place competing alongside 9 other schools. The dance was

entirely student choreographed and the team had been working hard since

January to put it together. Congratulations Fréchette Crew!

Track & Field is just around the corner!! All students in grades 4-8

have already started running, jumping and throwing so that we are all

ready for Track and Field events. More information will come home,

but for now here's the schedule:

June 13 - Junior Areas Track & Field (Grades 4-6) at Vaughan SS

June 14 - Intermediate Areas Track & Field (Grades 7-8) at Vaughan SS

YRDSB Survey for Parents/Guardians We will be inviting parents/guardians to participate in a survey May 1-19, 2017. This

survey provides an important opportunity for parent/guardian voice. Results will be used

to guide planning to support student achievement and well-being. You may complete the survey online or on paper. The online survey will be available in

English. Paper surveys will be available from the school office in English, Simplified

Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Farsi, Gujarati, Hebrew, Korean, Punjabi, Russian, Sri

Lankan Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese. We value your input and encourage you to complete the survey. The information you pro-

vide will be anonymous, considered confidential and kept in strict accordance with all

relevant legislation. Information about how to access the online survey will be sent home with students at the

ENVIRONMENT CLUB - ECO-SCHOOLS LHF's waste reduction goals

The 20-Minute Makeover was a success! In total, we picked up 14 kg of litter,

leaving our schoolyard a greener place. Thank to you all of the teachers, students, &

our Eco-Team for making it possible! Students can do their part in keeping Fréchette green by keeping food & food wrappers inside the school. Unfinished snacks & food

can be stored in lunch bags for later. The earth is an extension of our homes, let’s

be kind to it. Building Nature Connections III at Bakersfield P.S.

On Thursday, April 27th, Mme Paul, Mme Tran & members of the Sr. Eco-team represented Fréchette at the annual

Building Nature Connections Eco-summit! Building Nature Connections encourages students & their families to learn more about the environment and to enjoy the green spaces in their community. Our Eco-team ran a booth to inspire

community members to get crafty with their recyclables and to up-cycle them instead of throwing them away. We repurposed items such as single-use plastic water bottles to create engaging carnival games, like ring toss and a

Plinko machine! Eco-trivia questions were embedded into the carnival games to make them a richer learning

experience. Thanks for your hard work, Eco-team!

Our Edible Fréchette Food Garden Throughout the month of May and June, Jr. Eco-Team members will be showing leadership in the

school community by caring for edible food garden & outdoor classroom! Students will be mulching, planting, watering and pruning the garden. Fréchette's food garden provides various opportunities for

students to learn about sustainable living, eating locally (& seasonally) & its positive benefits on the

environment. Come visit our garden near the end of the month of May! We hope to see you there.

Healthy Schools Committee: Eco Day Assembly On April 20th, during our Eco Day Assembly, the whole school participated in the Big Crunch! Every-

one was given a juicy apple and crunched into it all at the same time! So fun!

Jump Rope for Heart The kick off assembly was held on Tuesday, April 4th. The L.H.F. fundraising goal is $2,000.00

this year. We are asking students to collect donations and submit them on line or with their

pledge envelope that went home a few weeks ago. Let's get active by skipping outside and help

raise funds for heart and stroke research. The Jump event was held on Thursday, April 27th when the whole school participated in the

Jump Rope for Heart event. Every student had an opportunity to go outside and skip with their

classmates for a period. The schedule for the event was posted to the Heart and Stroke fundrais-

ing envelopes that went home a few weeks ago. Students are reminded to bring their own skip-

ping ropes for the event and to write their names on it. You’re the Chef We have finished the You're the Chef program with a select group of grade 4 students. They were very

excited and engaged in the program. We made chickpea curry, rice vermicelli, veggie fries and bruschetta,

among other things! Snack Program We continue to implement the snack program. Once a week, our grade 7 chef ambassadors will go to

every class and provide two snacks for each child who wants one, each snack from a different food group.

Undergarments must be reasonably covered.

Tops must reasonably meet bottoms when arms are raised.

Head coverings of any description will not be worn inside the school. Exceptions are made for reli-gious or medical reasons.

Tops must not be low cut and straps must be at least the width of two fingers.

Articles of clothing with inappropriate slogans or pictures are not permitted.

Tank tops with spaghetti straps, halter tops, tube tops and muscle shirts are not permitted.

Sheer see-through clothing is not permitted

Appropriate Dress for the School Day As the warm weather approaches, students look forward to wearing their summer clothes such as shorts and summer tops. Students who arrive at school dressed inappropriately will be asked to correct the issue or call home. Discrepancies will be resolved by the principal. Thank you for your cooperation.

LHF Athletics

Basketball Since February, the Junior boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been training several times a week. Before school, after school and at most recesses, the gym was full of athletes striving to do their best. In the end, both groups of students became incredible teammates and grew in many ways. Neither team ever gave up, and participated in several after-school tournaments, learning new lessons all the way. A special congratulations to both teams who represented Fréchette at the Area Tournaments. Every member of our teams deserve much recognition for their dedication, hard work and support of one an-other over the past few months. Both the junior girls and the junior boys’ teams represented Fréchette at the Area Finals on April 21st and 28th. The boys’ team placed first at the area final and won the pennant. WOW!!! Congratulations!!! They boys are looking forward to the Regional tournament on May 4th. The girls performed amazingly well and made to the area semi-finals. Awesome!!!!

Badminton Intermediate students have been hard at work practicing badminton during lunch to be ready for the upcoming area tournament on May 10th. If they make it to the regional finals, that will take place on May 16th. Good luck to the team and coaches preparing to demonstrate LHF's competitive spirit!

RESPECTING YOUR CHILD’S LEARNING TIME…

Please respect your child’s precious learning time by arriving to school on time. Arriving late affects your

child’s learning and it is also disruptive for the class. Please drop off your child at school between 9:05 -

9:15am. They must be in their class at 9:20am. If you must take your child out early for an appointment, please remember to write a note in your child’s

agenda so that the teacher is aware that they are leaving early. This will help remind the teacher to send

your child to the office without having the office call into the classroom. Please do not call asking for the

office to call your child down before you arrive to the school. Your child is missing valuable class time

waiting for you. If you wish to pick up your child during the lunch time, please pick up your child before 1:30pm or after

lunch at 2:20pm. We are not able to go out on the yard to look for your child when he/she is outside for

the recess portion of the lunch. Students will be sent to the office once you arrive.

Our Hot Lunch program’s success depends greatly on your generosity and participation. This program has greatly contributed to the technology and other resources we have available in our school to support your child's learning and classroom programming.

We are trying to maintain the success of this program for many years to come. We are seeking volunteers for next year to assist with the organization and distribution of the lunches. If you have time during the day, between 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. any day of the week, and would like to volunteer your time, please send an email or phone the school. We are also looking for school lunch assistants for next year 2017-2018. Check. If you are planning to help on a field trip, drive students to athletic events, volunteer in the school, etc., the

Board now requires us to have this check prior to any contact with students (even if you have volunteered previously). Parents must request a letter for volunteer purposes from the office, signed by Mme Furlin before going to the Police

Services office to request the form. Letters are available from the office. Please get your Police Screening Check as soon as possible as it sometimes takes several weeks to process.
