Through February we engaged in many activities to promote inclusion, engagement, growth mindset and school spirit. With the end of term one and report cards going home, our students and staff continue to set goals for continued and improved social and academic success. We look to support and foster growth mindsets in our students and ourselves as we set challenges for the new term. As a school we have stayed the course regarding our goals to develop our students’ problem solving skills in a variety of different contexts. In the area of Mathematics, for example, we integrate the use of Puzzles and Games in our Comprehensive Math program to engage our students with mathematical processes, deepen understandings, develop new strategies and increase computational fluency. This month we hosted our annual Valentine’s Day dance and it was another huge success. Each grade was invited to participate in a fun session of dancing and music. We also hosted Shaun Boothe, a hip hop artist, who presented to our Grades 4 8 classes. His presentation highlighted the biographies of several famous African Americans and his message of living your legacy resonated with and engaged the audience. We would like to thank our School Council for sponsoring the event. Our volleyball and basketball teams have been very active and successful in the tournaments hosted both at home and ‘away’. Many of our classes enjoyed field trips to a variety of locations such as the Burlington Outdoor Recreation Centre (BORC) and the Community Safety Village. Our student Youth Voice team hosted our second Pink Day on February 28 th with a focus on ‘identity’. Students were engaged in learning and activities exploring their interests, their strengths and their ‘selves’. As the year progresses we look forward to supporting and promoting student engagement and school spirit through a continued variety of activities. We also celebrated our Canadian winter spirit (sans neige) with ‘Carnaval’. The week- long celebration included a number of spirit days, outdoor activities and many visits from Bon Homme! This year we also hosted an Open House during Carnaval week where family members came to visit their child(ren)’s classes, participate in activities and join in the fun. We loved seeing everyone who was able to join us! We hope to see many more families at our upcoming Spring events, such as our Literacy Night on March 27 th at Indigo Richmond Hill (see flyer on page 4), our production of Robin de Bois and our year-end Barbecue! Opportunities such as these demonstrate to our children the importance of collaboration and partnership and what it means to be part of the Fréchette family. Don’t forget that March Break is fast approaching, March 12th to March 16th. Classes will resume March 19th. We wish you a happy and safe holiday and look forward to receiving our students refreshed and ready to jump into their learning for the remainder of the school year! YOUTH VOICE GROUP On Wednesday, February 28th, our Youth Voice group (comprised of grade 6-8 students) created and delivered lessons to all classes in our school on the topic of Identity. The age appropriate lessons touched on questions such as: What are your interests? How do you see yourself? What are you proud of about yourself? We celebrated our various "identities" by doing an activity that represents who we are. These will be posted outside of the classroom doors. Every time that our children walk into class, they will see their identity first.

WINTER CARNIVAL

This week Fréchette is hosting a Winter Carnival to celebrate French culture and

engage in a variety of learning experiences that will enhance the students‛ apprecia-

tion of the French language, French Canadian traditions and celebrations.

Our Carnival began on Monday, February 26th and continues through to Friday,

March 2nd. The first part of the week has been fun and informative for parents/

guardians who have come to visit and we look forward to a fun-filled end to the week for everyone.

Please refer to the letter sent home week of February 20th.

MESSAGE FOR PARENTS WHO HAVE ORDERED HOT LUNCHES FOR THEIR CHILD Nutrition and healthy eating is as important to health as it is to learning. Unfortunately, there are many

children arriving at school with no food or not enough food to eat, or the lunch that they ordered is not

served that day. Please ensure that you mark the date for all your child/children’s lunches . Also

ensure that your child/children have sufficient food and snacks to make it through the school day. We are

not equipped to serve groups of children, that for whatever reason, arrive in the office with no lunch or not

enough lunch. We have a number of students coming into the office requesting lunch and/or snacks on a

daily basis and students who come into the office complaining that they do not like their lunch. Please talk

to your child/children about what they like to eat and the importance of eating what they have in their

lunch. There also seems to be a question about the dates that lunches will be served. Lunches that are ordered

from school will ALWAYS be served on the same calendar day (i.e. Monday—Friday). If we have a day

off, for example, Monday or Friday or a (PA Day or holiday) lunches are not served on that day.

REMINDER: Please be aware that there will be no hot lunches served on inclement weather days. Please send your child/ren with a lunch on these days. Old order for pizza ends on March 5. New order starts on March 19 and ends June 25. Old order for Tuesday lunch ends March 6. New order will start March 20 and ends June 26. Old order for Wednesday lunch ends March 7. New order will start March 21 and ends June 27. Old order for Thursday lunch ends March 8. New order will start March 22 and ends June 21. Old order for Friday lunch ends on April 6. New order will start on April 13 and ends June 22. Please feel free to contact the office if you have any questions or need support in this matter.

SPOONS AND FORKS - Every day many of students come down to the office requesting a spoon or fork

so that they can eat their snacks/lunches. The school, unfortunately, cannot provide plastic spoons and forks.

We ask that parents/guardians please provide a reusable spoon or fork from home in their child’s lunch.

Students who get hot lunches are provided with spoons and/or forks in their lunch.

Please remember the three R’s, Recycle, Reduce, Reuse Thank you for your support in this matter.

Contribute to Strategic Planning at YRDSB - Upcoming Town Halls

York Region District School Board is revisioning its Multi-Year Plan (MYP) and Board Improvement Plan

for Student Achievement and Well-being. The Board of Trustees is responsible for setting the strategic di-

rection of public education in York Region public schools. The MYP incorporates the direction established

by the Trustees with feedback received from all stakeholders, and will inform decision making at the Board

in the years to come. Town halls will be taking place across the region and feedback collected from fami-

lies and community members will inform the creation of a new MYP. Your voice is important and your

input and feedback will help York Region District School Board support student achievement and well-

being. There will also be other opportunities, including a survey available in April, to share your thoughts

if you are unable to attend a town hall.

BOYS’ AND GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAMS Since December, the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have been training several times a week. Before school, after school and at most recesses, the gym was full of athletes striving to do

their best. In the end, both groups of students became incredible teammates and grew in many

ways. Neither team ever gave up, and participated in several after-school tournaments, learning new lessons all the way. A special congratulations to both teams who played in tournaments in February. Many of the

games were very close and the teams kept their cool. Both boys and girls won their tournaments and advanced to the Area Finals. The boys will be playing in he Area Final on March

1st and the girls on March 6th. BRAVO! What an excellent season! Congratulations! We look forward to the Regionals. Every member of our teams deserve much recognition for their dedication, hard work and support of one another

over the past few months. Thank you very much to the coaches who put in endless hours supporting the teams.

Coaches: M. Durand, M. Deschenes Mme Di Tommaso and M. Baker

BADMINTON TEAM Badminton has just started and many students have come to try out for the team. They are

putting forth a great effort and having great fun. Those birdies are flying. The team has now been

chosen and wish them the best in their future tournaments. Coaches: M. Deschenes and M. Durand

INCLEMENT WEATHER

The winter season is here! It is important to review our procedure for bus cancellations and school closures. Buses

may be cancelled on any winter day when it is deemed unsafe to operate buses or have students

waiting outside.

Please remember that if the school buses are cancelled in the morning, then they will NOT operate in the after-

noon. Therefore, if you drive your children to school in the morning, you must also pick them up from school at 3:50

p.m. When buses are cancelled, it does not necessarily mean that schools are closed. Schools usually remain open

with a modified program. To find out whether or not the buses are cancelled, please check the following website:

Healthy Schools Committee

You’re the Chef The next You're the Chef will be held in April for grade 7 students who sign up. More details will follow.

BIG CRUNCH Fréchette will celebrate the "The Big Crunch" on March 2nd, during the Carnaval Assembly. Ontario grown apples will be eaten to celebrate healthy eating at school. Students will receive an apple and crunch together with the whole school during our assembly. PLAY PROGRAM Grade 7 students continue to run the Play Program every recess. They organize games for primary students and monitor fair play and inclusivity. Encourage your child to seek the play leaders, meet some new friends and learn some new games. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART

Our Jump Rope for Heart kick off Assembly will take place on Friday, April 6th. We encourage families to support fundraising for the Heart and Stroke Foundation!

Any questions or to volunteer please contact Judy and Anna at email: [email protected] and [email protected] .

The ECO-Update! Eco-ideas

The Grade 3 and Grade 4 members of the Eco-club have prepared a list of eco-friendly ideas that they will share each Monday of March and April! This initiative is called "Les idées écolos!" This year, in keeping with our theme of Modern Learning and incorporating technology, we have filmed short videos that will be shared through Google Slides during morning announcements. We hope to reach the entire student body and we hope to make a difference! These Eco-ideas will help the school make small, yet impactful changes to reduce our waste production and energy consumption. Here's an Eco-idea for you: If you didn't finish your lunch, bring your leftovers home! A boomerang lunch helps not only to reduce waste at school, but reduce food waste as well! Earth Hour 2018 is Saturday, March 24. On Saturday, March 24th from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm turn out your lights, turn off electronics and spend an hour with your family. Play some board games, or enjoy the great outdoors and stargaze! Join millions of people across the world and think about saving energy to benefit the environment. At Fréchette we will celebrate Earth Hour on Friday, March 23 from 2:30 pm to 3:30 p.m. Teachers will turn off the lights and plan activities to help students learn about conserving energy.

Re: Student Bussing Eligibility Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter’s eligi-bility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board’s Transportation Policy #680: • All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation • All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation • All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

Please be advised that those students who fall under the above criteria have not been eligible for bussing as of March 19th, 2012.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE LINE

The office needs your help. If your child is going to be late, absent or on vacation, you

MUST call the 24/hr attendance line and leave a message. You may want to leave a mes-

sage with your child’s teacher, but you must also leave a message on the attendance line at

905-907-7884. Your call is very important to us.

EXTRA CHANGE OF CLOTHES AT SCHOOL

The snow is not over yet, but we hope that soon we are nearing the end of the winter

season and we may have warmer days ahead. This means that snow and ice will melt and

the field/pavement area may be a wet and sloppy mess. With this in mind, we are asking

parents/guardians to please provide your child/children with a change of

clothes in a plastic bag, clearly marked with their name (including, sweater,

undershirt, pants, underpants, socks and an extra pair of gloves). This will

avoid a call home. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

BUSING: This is a reminder to parents that, FOR SAFETY REASONS, students can only ride their designated bus. They are not allowed to take another student’s bus to or from school for any reason. Your child’s name is associated with a particular bus number and must only ride that bus, therefore we ask parents to honour this.
