TRADITIONALLY there is only one way to watch a Red Hot Chili Peppers’ gig.. and that’s JUMPING. (Preferably off a Marshall stack, whilst dodging security, into a raging sea of jumping Peppers’ lovers.) So when (in their infinite wisdom and impeccable taste) the proprietors of the Theatre Royal (30 Hargraves St, Castlemaine), decided to screen the live concert performance of the Red Hot Chili Peppers performing their new album (I’m With You) in it’s entirety, (plus a few old faves) we had to engineer another way to watch a Peppers’ gig. And we figure that watching them live on the big screen, whilst eating pizza and having a cold beer with buddies in a darkened theatre, is almost as good as the traditional stadium show… (possibly better - you can’t take popcorn to a gig now can you?)And just as well we’ll be seated. The Theatre Royal in Castlemaine is a grand old dame at 153 years old. If we were planning a mosh, we may need to organise some restumping. The Red Hot Chili Peppers’ first studio recording in five years is I’m With You. On August 30 they performed the new album live in Cologne, Germany. (The album was played in chronological order, the first and only time they will perform the album in this way) The event was filmed in HD, and has screened around the world in select cinemas. And it’s our turn: Tuesday, October 4, and Wednesday, October 5, from 8pm, at the Theatre Royal, Tickets are $20. More info: 5472 1196 or: theatreroyal.info.

Get your skates onget motivated, get movingBIKINI weather is not that far away (or so say the experts). If winter left you with a few more coats than norm, you’ll be happy to know it’s fitness central in Daylesford town this month. The Daylesford Arc (39 Smith Street) have lots of classes and team sports to help you get motivated and get moving, there’s: Boot Camp, Basketball, Volleyball, Step Class and wait for it…Roller Derby. The secret’s out...I can’t really read a mapBACK in the day, children were taught to read maps. They navigated through life with a compass, the constellations and trail of breadcrumbs ‘just in case’. These days kids need SatNav to find their way out of a packet of salt and vinegar Samboys. SO! When offered a map or a schmick little Garmin GPS unit to traverse a Secret Forest Walk in the Wombat State Forest. Yours truly took the map. Your intrepid hikers followed both map and GPS – following the ‘pink line’ on both paper & screen, and just quietly… the GPS won. Perhaps I was too struck by the beauty of the forest, the tall timbers, wildflowers, crashing water at Sailors Falls, and the new fern fronds springing from damp earth, to notice when we took a wrong turn, (twice) but the GPS sure recognised it. And drew a big black line of shame across the screen to prove it. (Oh the humiliation.) Pass the freakin’ Samboys.

Secret Forest Walks are self guided hikes for individuals and groups through Wombat State Forest and surrounds. Daily kit hire includes: maps, GPS, water, snacks, and a detailed briefing prior to departure. Corporate groups are catered for with GPS Treasure Hunts and team building blind-fold sessions... Romantic hikers can walk to secluded picnic spots where a gourmet hamper awaits. Prices start from $60. For more information and bookings: secretforestwalks.com or call: 0418 301 281. Kathy Douglas

WRITE ‘perfect day in the country’ on your calendar on Sunday, October 30, Lavandula’s own celebration of its Swiss Italian Heritage (la Primavera) is without doubt one of the most beautiful ways to end a weekend. Set in a picture perfect rustic farm setting, with manicured fields of lavender, old stone buildings, little duckies quacking, picnic blankets, and perfect children chasing geese, it’s insanely gorgeous. Visit the 1860s farmhouse, kick back with a vino and bit of live music, and graze on something local and luscious at La Trattoria. It’s an idyllic day in the country, the air, the food, the wine, music and song. It’s all a bit too gorgeous to be true.Lavandula La Primavera 10:30am - 5pm. Entry $5 adults, $2 school-age children. 350 Hepburn-Newstead Road, Shepherds Flat. More info: 5476 4393.

Lose the kids for awhilethese holidaysSCHOOL holiday fun for the entire family can be found in Springmount, just five kilometres from Creswick. The family tourist attraction we talk of has an 18 hole mini golf course and a unique botanical maze, (there’s a couple hours lost right there). There’s giant chess, Bocce or quoits and puzzles galore and... coincidence? We think not, there is a café at the 19th hole! If you don’t fancy getting all energetic and rather send the kids off to get lost (no comment) in the maze, then, they also double as Mistydowns Nursery specialising in heritage roses, peonies and unusual perennials. A bit of retail therapy with the promise of some garden time at the end all while the kids are lost (we like). More info: tangledmaze.com.au or call: 5345 2847. Prices start at $6.90 with a family pass: $49.50. Open 10am to 5.30pm daily except Christmas Day.

trenthamgolf, bread, falls & friendly folk

Is it a golf town? Is it a farm town? Is it a forest village? Is it boutiquey and gorgeous? Can you get good fair trade organic coffee? And an enormous oversized statue of a giraffe? Yes. Yes to it all. It’s Trentham… and yes, you really should pay a visit.

whyAs above, tiny Trentham is many things to many people… but since Trentham is our little secret, you’ll still be able to get a park in the main street on a Saturday.

whatBuy still-warm organic sourdough currant buns, peruse galleries and antiques over your latte, see live music, eat truffles in a decadent stable and celebrate the humble potato.

howTrentham is a picturesque 15-20 minute drive from Daylesford through Wombat State Forest and farmland, 15-20 minutes from Woodend and 15 minutes from Kyneton.

THE OLD Macaroni Factory, Lucini’s Pasta Cafe (64 Main Road Hepburn Springs) is Australia’s oldest Italian building, (1859) And the current owner is a fourth generation descendant of the brothers who constructed the factory way back then. Cool huh? Back in the day, it was built to satisfy the pasta cravings the regions’ new Italian migrants had. And still today, for carb loaders and lovers, the Old Macaroni Factory is pasta heaven and at Swiss Italian Festa time it shines like a carbonara beacon in the night. Friday, October 21, The Old Macaroni Factory presents a night of food, film and song. Feast under the c1862 ceiling frescoes and catch a special screening of Love’s Brother, filmed on location at the Old Macaroni Factory and around the Hepburn Shire. Dinner is from 6pm, film at 9pm. Bookings preferred: 5348 4345.

WHILST it’s true that in a lot of country towns you may be hard pressed to find a range of multi-cultured food, not so in this region. The list of international cuisines available around here reads like a backpacker’s library of Lonely Planet guides: Thai, Indian, Italian, Mediterranean, American, German, French, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Modern Australian, Aussie pub, and now thanks to newcomer Kazuki’s at the Raglan (1 Camp St, Daylesford), we have Japanese! Whilst Kazuki’s is actually Japanese inspired bistro fare, on Sunday, October 30, (and the last Sunday of every month) Kazuki’s offer a delectable Japanese Banquet lunch of five shared courses of what else but, Japanese tucker, complete with a pot of sake. Bookings essential, phone: 5348 1218, More info visit: kazukis.com.au and for a full run down of restaurants turn to the guide from page 51.

Swiss Italian Festalet the festivities begin!NO WONDER there’s so much great coffee and fabulous chocolate around here… it’s in our blood! Some of the first settlers to the region were Swiss Italian migrants taking a chance on the rugged terrain, fertile soils, incredible mineral springs and of course, joining in the search for the elusive rivers of gold! Each year the Hepburn community celebrates their Swiss Italian heritage with the ten day event The Swiss Italian Festa. The Festa begins with the Grand Parade. This vibrant and colourful parade features local kinder, primary and secondary schools and community groups, including the Swiss Matterhorn Yodellers, Swiss Companion Singers, Alpenrose Dancers, the Daylesford & District Municipal Band and Daylesford & District Pipes & Drums, to put some yodelay-hii-hoooo and oom-pah-pah into your Saturday. The Parade winds down to the Mineral Springs Reserve, and is followed by a concert at the Soundshell, performed by local schools and community groups. The concert will be all singing, all dancing, all theatre and fun. Bring a picnic, pull up a patch of grass and laze away the afternoon in the iconic Mineral Springs Reserve. BYO cup to taste the mineral waters, and a few dollars to sample tasty treats whipped up by local community groups fundraising for the day. (If the weather decides to…erm, rain on the parade, the Family Festa performances will be held at The Palais (111 Main Road, Hepburn Springs) immediately following the parade). The Swiss Italian Festa Opening Parade and Family Festa Performances will be held on Saturday, October 22. (Main Road will be closed to through traffic from 10:30 – 11:15am). The Community Concert will commence at 12pm, and the Family Festa will continue throughout the day till 3pm. This is a free event. More info 0447 697 997, or visit: swissitalianfesta.com for the full program.

Clouds pass to reveal starswe’ll cheers to that!TO THOSE who pooh-pooh climate change – tell it to a winemaker. Graeme and Cameron Leith of Passing Clouds (30 Roddas Lane, Musk) packed up their drought stricken Kingower winery into 16 (!!) semi trailers and moved the whole shebang to Musk, where the rain is a wee bit more constant and the climes more conducive to a cool climate crop… (Pinot anyone??). The move has proved inspirational with Cameron whipping up a few precious barrels of 2008 Graeme’s Blend and 2008 Angel that Mr James Halliday lauded with 94 points. (And slapped 5 stars on the front door of the winery to boot). Nice. On Sunday, October 22, Passing Clouds, will share the fabled 94 point reds, the cool climate Pinot Noirs and a Sparkling Chardonnay with the world. Bring a picnic and listen to live music or feast on catering by Spade to Blade. The Annual Wine Release will be held from 11am-5pm. For more info visit: passingclouds.com.au or call: 5348 5550.

Yum Cha, Dim Sumyum yum!WHILST it literally means ‘drink tea’ or ‘tasting of tea’, Yum Cha or Ban Ming (in Chinese) involves so much more than tea. Delicious (non-stop) servings of various fried or steamed bite sized portions of Dim Sum (literal translation: snack).Similar to Western tradition of afternoon tea, the Yum Cha tradition is with tea and delicacies (sweet and savoury) and can be breakfast, lunch or as we prefer, an all day combination of all meals. Yum Cha or Ban Ming, now matter how you say it, it’s just plain yum! And, as luck would have it, one can now find Yum Cha served every Saturday and Sunday at Water Garden Chinese Restaurant (111A Vincent Street, Daylesford). Retreat to Tukifor holiday funSTUCK for ideas to keep the kiddies amused these school holidays? Or just on weekends in general? Then look no further than right here. One such fun outing, sure to please the entire family, is the Tuki experience. The Tuki Trout Farm (60 Stoney Rises Road, Smeaton) at Tuki Retreat is only 20 klicks north-west of Daylesford and caters to kids of all ages. Shedding the winter coat......so we can gain anotherWE ALL let ourselves go over Winter. We don’t see the beauty therapist as often as we perhaps should, the legs are hurried into 70+ denier and forgotten ‘til the sun peeps out in spring. And it’s not just our species booking into the beautician this time of year… Our four legged friend the Alpaca, is so lax in the depilatory department, she only shaves once a year. Creswicks’ famed Alpacas, are being shorn Saturday, October 29, at Creswick Woollen Mills (Railway Parade Creswick) If you only shaved once a year it’d be an event too, so come along and watch as the Alpacas lose their wonderful winter wool and expose their summer skin. (Spray tan anyone??).The Seventh Annual Alpaca Shearing Day is free and starts from 11am. For more information call: 5345 2202.

Kynetonold wares, eclectic art & indulgence

Hotel linen, robes & toasterlike them? take them all home!THERE is a plethora of accommodation choices in Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges. One would imagine in order to stand out from the crowd you’d have to be or do something pretty special. And one would have a guess that’s what Deborah Myers and Yvonne Paulke had in mind when they came up with the clever concept of “experiencing 5 star luxury and then taking it home with you” at Mollisons (116-118 Mollison St, Kyneton). This boutique guesthouse is set in an old (early 1900s) bank and has been restored and furnished with a mix of antique and contemporary pieces. All designed to complement the original character and grandeur of the building. So you like the bed you sleep in? It’s yours! Admire the one-off designer lamp? Also yours. It’s all for sale and yours to take home (for a fee of course!). For more info visit: mollisons.net.au.And for more choices on where to sleep check out: visitdaylesford.com.au or visitmacedonranges.com.au dp

Cocktails, canapésand the CWAMASTERCHEF has a lot to answer for. Suddenly everyone is a budding chef and culinary expert. Don’t get us wrong, we mean it in a positive way. It’s a great thing. And, it’s not only Masterchef that has a lot to answer for, the Jamies and Nigellas of the world have also contributed to this cooking revolution. And don’t forget those clever country lasses of the CWA kind, they’ve been encouraging the masses to pull on an apron since 1922. So, for those yearning to cook like a pro, you need not turn to the TV in these parts. The clever folk behind Spoons Cooking School run classes to bring out your inner Nigella or hidden Jamie talents, right here in Spa Country. With workshops entitled: Cocktails and Canapes, Classic Cakes, Fast & Fabulous, Tribute to the CWA and Tastes of Asia, you will be whipping up a storm like the best of them! Of Pollock & preschoolthe Rotary art show...WHEN Jackson Pollock splattered his way through Abstract Expressionism, he opened the door for such commentary as: “My three year old can paint better than that”, “Pfft… that’s not art”, and the classic: “Anyone could do that”. But until then, no one had. He was just a bloke in his shed creating genius. Many locals with a paint palette and a dream love this time of year, because this is when they summon their inner Pollock, create their shed masterpieces and show them, at the Annual Daylesford Rotary Art Show. (Daylesford Town Hall, Vincent Street, Friday, October 28, to Monday, October 31, 9:30am – 5pm).There’s a ‘Best in Show’ prize of $1500. For a gold coin donation you could witness the Pollock-esque work of a three year old, or perhaps the work of a creative, genre defining genius. kd

Sculpture culturein GlenlyonNO DOUBT about it, we’re an arty bunch ‘round here. There are loads of art shows throughout the region where talented artists display their masterpieces and The Annual Glenlyon Sculpture Show (Saturday, October 29 ‘til Sunday, November 6) is one such event! This year the 5th annual show invites local sculptors to fill the 1890’s Glenlyon Hall (Barkly Street, Glenlyon) and the lawns outside. Previously the show has displayed such diverse works as intricate woodcarvings and enormous welded metal wonders, found objects transformed, even a full-sized gypsy caravan. The event is generously sponsored by local individuals and businesses and there is fantastic prize money of $1500 for the winner, (ch-ching!) giving extra incentive to wow the audience and judges. More info, visit: glenlyon.vic.au or phone 5348 7629. dp

Weeeeee-Ahhhhhhwho doesn’t like fireworks? BESIDES dogs, that is. All good things must come to an end. Always hated that saying as a kid. It usually meant the party was over, school holidays had finished or the Gravitron ride at The Show had slowed to a no-longer-gravity-defying (or vomit inducing) halt. Shame really, we’d prefer good things never ended, but alas, even the Swiss Italian Festa must, and as always, it ends with a parade… and a bang. The beautiful Lantern Parade (Sunday, October 30), is a peaceful walk through the bush with local children carrying their glowing handmade lanterns before gathering at Hepburn Springs Mineral Reserve for a fireworks display. BYO lantern and wander with the crowd, to the fireworks finale. Meet at 10th Street Hepburn Springs at 7pm. Follow the Festa Jester to the Reserve. The evening concludes at 9pm.

Clowning aroundoutside of the classroom

WHAT’S a class clown to do on school holidays? Well, fine tuning your clown skills is a good place to start. The YMCA is hosting a school holiday Clown Workshop at the Daylesford ARC (39 Smith Street) from 9am to 3pm on Wednesday, October 5. Glenda May (AKA Crumpette the Clown) has clowned around, sorry, performed internationally, in a career spanning 25 years of magic, balloon twisting and hundreds of red noses. With Crumpette’s guidance, 12 to 16 year olds will workshop their own clown character, experimenting with costumes, make-up and performance skills along the way. At 2.00pm, the newbie Clowns will stage a FREE short performance of their fun new clowning skills. (Suitable for three to eight year olds).Cost $30 per person. To book, call Daylesford ARC: 5348 1777 or 0458 307 351.
