NEWS FROM THE EAST LOOE TOWN TRUSTFLOOD DEFENCES: The Trust strongly supports the proposals set out recently bythe Harbour Commissioners, Environment Agency and Cornwall Council. We havetwo particular interests. A number of the buildings which we are required to maintainare old and listed. Protecting them from further deterioration is vital. Equally importantly, the quality of bathing water is a continuing issue for the town and theproposed extension of the banjo pier would make a significant difference by divertingriver water further out to sea so that it does not mix with bathing water immediatelyoff the beach.THE MUSEUM: Congratulations and warm thanks to the volunteers who haveworked tirelessly throughout the winter months to give the museum a major faceliftfor its opening on 3rd April. This is part of the effort to further widen its appeal, especially to young people. The Trust is pleased to have been able to increase itsfunding of the museum this year. We and the Museum Management Committee arealso grateful for a substantial grant from Viridor for improved lighting, which will permit much better presentation of displays.RUBBISH: Cornwall Council has now decided to discontinue the collection of rubbish from bins on privately owned land even though the public have unrestrictedaccess to it. This is on top of a decision a couple of years ago to charge the Trustfor the removal of the tons of litter coming from the beach and seafront (even thoughour staff collect and deliver it all to a loading point) - at a cost to us of some £8,500per year. The latest decision is to be implemented by the end of March, so existingbins in the Rose Garden and on the Wishing Well site will be removed. The Councilis said to be increasing the number/capacity of bins on the streets.ST PIRAN’S DAY: We were pleased to come to the rescue when it looked as if thecelebrations arranged by the Looe Old Cornwall Society were in danger of beingrained off. At short notice we were able to make the Guildhall available, free ofcharge, to the delight especially of the many participating schoolchildren. Their enthusiasm and flag waving would have lifted the hearts of all good Cornish folk, born or adopted.

LOOE GIG CLUBThe season is finally upon us! After a winter of ergos followed by more ergos, wehave the first race under our belts. Again a fantastic showing from Looe as fourcrews participated in the much-loved Saltash Three Rivers race, with Looe achievingcracking results again. Ladies’ A finishing 7th and Ladies’ B 32nd from 73 crews.Looe Men’s A finished a superb 2nd behind Falmouth, and Men’s B crew 16th from80 crews. All those miles on the ergos really paying off! With the World Championships in The Scillies around the corner lots of hard workhas been going on behind the scenes. This year we will be taking six crews, threemen's and three ladies’.Two of our wooden gigs, Samphire and Talisman, have had complete MOTs inpreparation for The Scillies. Stripping, sanding, painting and varnishing takes a lotof hours on two 32 feet gigs, but the hard work has paid off and the boats look splendid. Special mention to Lee who organised and motivated his minions, and toLucy for supplying donuts! Also a very big thank you to Yaron Peled of Tenderway Farm, who let us store thegigs there while the work was carried out. The extra room was a massive help.Looking ahead to another busy season, our regatta is on June 10th. We will also berunning Learn to Row for anyone who fancies giving it a go.

LOOE VALLEY SINGERSSeveral choir members came along to the Societies’ Day which was held recentlyin the Millpool Centre. The purpose of the day was to make people aware of thevarious activities and organisations taking place in Looe. We hoped that we could persuade some of the ladies that we spoke to to comealong and give singing a try. Almost everyone gave the same reply – “I can’t sing!”That’s not true. Why not come along and prove yourself wrong! There are no auditions, you don’t have to be able to read music and we have a wide range ofmusic, from Mozart to Motown. We meet on Thursday evening, in St Martin’s ChurchHall from 7.45pm. The choir has been singing in the community for over 30 years, raising money for local charities. We’re having a stall at West Looe May Fayre so come along and chat to us there. You can find more details on our website www.looevalleysingers.org or contact:Kathy 01503 272550 or Jill 01503 240768.

LOOE SAILING CLUBAfter the winter break, it’s all systems go with all the dinghies back on the sea front.A very busy registration evening saw over 40 boats entered on the one night. Thelargest fleet will be the Lasers with 16 signed up already, the most the club has everknown.Once again the racing will consist of Mirrors, Redwings, Enterprise and Laserson Saturday afternoons to start with and then on Thursday evenings as well whenlight permits, from mid April.A magnificent fleet of 32 boats lined up at the start line for the first race in a verylight breeze which unfortunately died completely after the start leaving most of thefleet becalmed. Eventually the race team were forced to abandon the race with mostcompetitors not completing the first beat. The safety boats were busy towing quitea lot back to the harbour.Only winners were the rugby followers who got back to the clubhouse in time to seeall of England's win over Scotland before enjoying the first race supper and musiclater in the evening.

LOOE MUSEUM NEWS
Lots of people ask what we do in the winter whilst the Museum is shut. We havehad an exceptionally busy time, and the Museum is probably longing for the start ofthe season for some peace and quiet!
We have now cleaned, relabelled and recorded all of the artefacts in the Museumcollection, as well as many other gems that we have found in various cupboardswhich we hope to use in the future. We are now in the process of photographingevery item so it can be entered on our Modes Computer which is part of our recording procedures. The new LED lighting and heating, paid for by a generousgrant awarded by Viridor, has now been installed, and we are very grateful to TonyGascoyne for all his hard work on the electrics. In the next few weeks we will beputting in new notices in cabinets and on walls as part of our updating programme.Kath Wilson, of One Offs Stained Glass, has very kindly given us two beautifullycrafted panels of glass depicting smugglers and pirates, and we have incorporatedthese into our new desk which now looks very smart indeed. We are now just aboutready for opening!
The coffee mornings and afternoons, which are part of the Living Archive project, have been a great success. It has been a privilege to share so many memories ofLooe with so many different people. I would like to thank all of the people who cameto visit us in the New Guildhall to look at our photos and talk to us, and we will becontinuing the project in November 2017. The collected memories have been digitised and will be used in the Museum as part of the collection. If you are unableto come into the New Guildhall, I am more than happy to come and speak to you inyour home; please contact the East Looe Town Trust (ELTT) on 01503 263709 andleave a message for me.
None of this would have happened without some fantastic volunteers who haveworked so hard and contributed so much to the Museum, and they have been sosupportive of both David Fuller and me. The Trustees of ELTT have also given usenormous support, for which we are very grateful. Special thanks must go to Judy,Anona, Anthony, Steve, Tony, Karin, Connie (great cakes!), Penny, Mandy, Margaret, David, Chris, Deborah, Carol and Kim, for being such fun to work withand for all their very hard work.
We will be having a Grand Opening on April 3rd, and all are very welcome to comeand have a look round the Museum. If you are interested in volunteering for usplease let us know, as we are always looking for new people, young and old, tocome and help us.

So, the Christmas decorations are down; the Easter Eggs and Valentines
cards have replaced the Christmas Crackers and trees in the shops; the News Years resolutions have been long
forgotten and its still raining! January can seem such a bleak month. Not so in the church’s calendar. January falls into the church season of Epiphany - a strange word that means ‘made manifest’ or ‘revealed’. It refers to the revelation of Jesus as both God and man - and this revelation is not just to a few shepherds and wise men but to the whole world. This is exciting stuff! God takes on human flesh and comes to live amongst ordinary people in order to show them how to live fulfilling, meaningful lives. Lives that don’t have to be filled with material things, the pursuit of endless wealth or anaesthetised with alcohol and drugs in order to survive. Epiphany is so exciting because it represents an open invitation to discover this Jesus for ourselves. Excited yet? Want to be? Discover this Jesus for yourself and never look back. Yours in Christ Philip

The aircraft captain was Flight Lieutenant Goven who was, reputably, the most experienced Sunderland pilot in the RAF. The Duke was making a visit to Reykjavic, Icleland, as partof his official duties as an RAF Air Commodore. The plan was to fly up the east coast of Scotland to John O’ Groats and then turn NWand head directly across the sea to Iceland. It was overcast and the pilot would havehad to fly by navigational instruments, It appears that a fatal error was made and theaircraft drifted inland and crashed into an outcrop known locally as the Eagles Rock. The resultant explosion instantly extinguished the lives of all on board save one, the tailgunner, Sgt Andrew Jack, who, complete with the tail-turret, was hurled clear from thewreck. Semiconscious, Jack extricated himself from the wreckage and wandered off inin a daze. He was eventually found 22 hours later. The crash has, over the years, raised many conspiracy theories, but was officially putdown to pilot error. This seems somewhat unfair considering the experience of the crew.Modern experts conclude that such accidents were to be expected, considering the technology of the time. On September 14th the King, George VI, visited the spot wherehis brother had been killed.Sgt Leonard Sweett was laid to rest in West Looe Cemetery. The next time you passthat way spend a few minutes to pay your respects to Sergeant Sweett (2nd row on theright, four graves in) and the other 12 WW1 and WW2 servicemen laid to rest in thecemetery.

MAYOR’S REPORTELECTIONOn the 4th May, 2017 there will be elections for both the Town Council and CornwallCouncil which for you as residents are important. This for the Town Council istouched with a little sadness as a couple of our current Councillors will not be standing again. I thank them for their service and wish them well for the future. Ithas been a difficult four years and the Council has taken more responsibility for thetown’s assets, like the public conveniences which have been refurbished to a goodstandard and reflect well on the town. If you have experience in local government, business or purely want to work for the town please consider being a Councillor.POST OFFICEAs you will know there were concerns about the closure of the Post Office in thecentre of the town. This only came to light when the local Post Master put up a signto inform us that it would be closing; this came as a great shock. After many hourson the phone myself and with the help of the local MP an agreement with the PostOffice was reached that the current Post Office would stay open for three days aweek until a new location could be found. The Town Council were an asset in thenegotiations and agreed to help fund the transitional period. I am able to say thatthe Post Office is actively working with a local business to take on this function forthe town and another is also in negotiations, so the future looks fine. When information becomes available I will make sure that it is known locally.LOOE ACADEMY I recently went to the school’s production of Toad of Toad Hall and I must thank thestudents for their excellent performance. It was a credit to the school and I am surethat anyone who saw this would agree the acting was of a very high level. Thankyou for the great night.OLD PARK LANEMany of you will have seen the local press articles of the completion of the Old ParkLane development in the grounds of the old play school site. There are 15 units forpeople with a local connection and more importantly they are social housing ataffordable rents. The builders, Gilbert and Goode, have done an excellent job witha good quality of finish. RNLI AGMI attended the RNLI AGM and was delighted to hear of the good work that is goingon to raise funds to keep the boats and crew of the station well equipped and supported. The volunteer fundraisers and the supporters that staff the shop do anexcellent job and I thank them for what they do. They say that behind every goodman is a woman but behind every brave RNLI crew member are the support staff

and volunteers who take care of the day to day details of the station and fundraising.A successful year for the station and I ask the community for their continued support.MARINERS’ GARDEN WALLAs you will know the Council has the ownership of the above asset for the townwhich is situated next to the Doctors Surgery and the bridge. Recently the supporting wall for the garden developed a hole in it and, under investigation, it wasfound to be unstable and the backfill behind it had been washed out. Engineerswere called in to do tests and found that it was unstable and needed work to secureit. Further to this a full report was received by the Council as to the works necessaryto repair the wall including a full and detailed plan. This has now been put out totender and three were received back. At a special meeting of the full Council Collard Construction were given the job to do the repairs. We are seeking assistance infunding these repairs from both the Environment Agency and Cornwall Council. Iwill publish the funds needed and any help we get so all residents know the coststo the town. A SPECIAL THANK YOUThis has been a busy year as Mayor and I thank the Council Staff and Councillorsfor their support in continuing with building a Council and town to be proud of. Infact when deciding what to include in this report there could have been many moreitems to include in the last couple of weeks alone. On Monday 13th March, I attended a function with the Looe Valley Rotary Club and had a great evening. Theirfundraising for all manner of charities is inspirational, locally, nationally and internationally. At the end of the evening I thanked them for the work they do andto my surprise they awarded me with the 2017 Community/Vocational Award. I thankthem for this honour and I accept it as part of the Town Council and staff who supportthe work I do. Also I attended the Looe Old Cornwall Association AGM to celebrate their 90th Anniversary. After many interesting talks about the events of the last 90 years I presented them with a certificate for community service from the Council. On Saturday last I attend the 150th celebration of the start of The Ancient Order ofForesters Friendly Society, which has a number of local members and was delightedto receive £50 from them for the Mayor’s Charity. Lastly, can I thank all those who attended the Mayors Dinner which I am delightedto say was very well attended by community groups, charities and the town’s organisations. The evening raised £2300 for the Mayor’s Charity and this will bedistributed at the Council’s AGM later in the year. Like everything in this town, someone does above and beyond the call of duty and I thank Annette Keen for allher hard work to make such an event possible.

TAI CHI AND QIGONG A new Tai chi and Qigong (pronounced “chi gung”) class is starting at the MillpoolCentre on Mondays from 12–1.30pm, starting on the 24th April. It is in addition tothe Wednesday evening class, which runs from 7.30-9pm. Tai chi and Qigongteach you to move slowly and gracefully and to relax and calm your mind. Therepetitive, slow movements help you to develop an awareness of your body andto move from your centre or “dan tien”. This has a beneficial effect upon yourposture and your balance, strengthening your legs and increasing your mobility. Tai chi is a martial art in origin but it is performed in slow motion. We practiseChen style Tai chi, which is the oldest style, and study the “Laojia” or old form, which consists of 74 sequences joined together into one continuous movement. All the movements are natural and graceful and gentle on the body. Qigong is older than Tai chi and dates back more than 2000 years. We practiseFive Animals Qigong, the Eight Pieces of Brocade, a series of 8 exercises called “Da Wu” and a stretching exercise called “Shen Jin Ba Gu”, meaning ‘stretchthe ligaments, open the joints’. All exercises can be adapted for sitting so peoplewho have difficulty standing or walking are welcome. The Wednesday evening class concentrates more on Tai chi than Qigong, although both are included, whereas the Monday lunchtime class focuses moreon Qigong than Tai chi, although again there are elements of both. If you want to find out more about Tai chi and Qigong at the Millpool Centre orin Liskeard or Downderry, contact Kath Revell on 01579 340591, 07729 907056, [email protected] www.ninjagranny.org Facebook Ninja Granny

The Porthpyra Singers is asmall mixed voice choirbased in Looe. We are afriendly group who meet ona Monday evening, 7:30pmat the Riverside Chapel in
West Looe. The choir welcomes new members across all voices, particularly malevoices; we are also looking for an accompanist. We are one of the few remaining mixed voices choirs in the area, however we are veryshort of male voices which seems to be the situation with many mixed voice choirs. Weare also surrounded by many male voice choirs which means the men are spread verythinly! Not to be disheartened we sing on and try to be optimistic that new members willjoin our ranks. As a community group the choir focusses much of its singing on raising money for localcharities. Last year was a bumper year with the choir raising £540 which was sharedbetween a variety of good causes including Penhaligon’s Friends, British Legion andlocal Cub, Scout and Brownies packs. In addition to this we sang at Looe Life Boat Station – all proceeds going to the station. Concerts: Our first concert of the year was at the Riverside Chapel where joined forceswith the Wadebridge Male Voice Choir and soloist, Charlotte Jones. Our next concertis at Looe Lifeboat Station on 1st May at 7:00 – again all proceeds going to the LifeboatStation. If you are interested in joining us please check out our Facebook page and website www.porthpyrasingers.com for more information or contact Kathy Iles by [email protected] or our Secretary Joan Taylor 01503 264061.
1ST LOOE SEA SCOUTSAt the end of January, Looe Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were joined by PelyntBeavers and Cubs for a sleep-over at Plymouth Aquarium – a night filled withfun and games, learning all about the aquarium’s residents and sleeping next tothe sharks. Since then the group has been busy, with all sections working towards variousbadges. Here’s just a small sample of what we’ve been learning about – Diwali, making models, taking part in team-building games, making pancakes, attendingdistrict events, learning first aid and many more activities. The children have alsobeen to both Plymouth and Pelynt pantomimes. As a group, we are lucky to be supported by many organisations in the town, but a huge thank you must be saidto West Looe Town Trust, who last year paid for a major refurbishment to ourScout hut. We are now warm and cosy in our amazing new building with a newkitchen and toilet facilities.Anyone wishing to help the group in any section, or has children who would liketo become a member of the group please contact Phil Thorn 01503 264468.

LOOE MUSIC FESTIVAL SPRING REPORTThe first part of 2017 has been occupied with re-structuring the LMF charity and appointing new trustees. This has provided much needed extra capacity within themanagement team to aid the day-to-day running of our growing charity, and deliveryof our events and projects.Just as 2016 ended on high, receiving the accolade of Cornwall’s Best CulturalTourism Event/Festival at the Cornwall Tourism Awards, LMF began 2017 with silverin the same category at the South West Tourism Excellence Awards – recognisingthe impact of the event on cultural tourism in our region and the south west. March has seen the charity release its accommodation provider deals, and we hopeto engage numerous accommodation parks within the local area to allow us to offerour customers the complete package when booking their festival visit. With visitorsnow staying for up to seven days, highlighting where people can stay, what theycan do and widening the shuttle bus route is a priority. The LMF charity aims, once again, to welcome new visitors to the town during LooeMusic Festival and to continue to work with renowned organisations such as BBCMusic, Marshall Amplification and St Austell Brewery, to showcase Looe as a spectacular cultural destination. LMF continues to design and deliver numerous other award-winning Arts projectswhilst also supporting dozens of local groups. The team would like to thank local residents, businesses and volunteers for theircontinued support, which contributes to the delivery and success of the festival. We look forward to this year’s event and bringing Lulu to Looe.

DO YOU ENJOY SINGING?If you do, we'd love to welcome you to Keltique – any woman who likes to sing canbe a member, even if you haven't sung seriously before. Keltique are looking to expand, particularly in the soprano and mezzo sections. We hope you'll find us asupportive group and we'll do our best to encourage the best from you.
Keltique is a group of women of all ages and musical abilities, who share one thing– a love and enthusiasm for the music they sing, whether it is modern soul, gospel, jazz, songs from the shows, pop or traditional classics. We practise at the MillpoolCentre in West Looe on Monday evenings from 7.25pm to 9.30pm – do just comealong, join in the fun and hear what we do!
