    A quality rating is a sign that anestablishment has been checkedto a minimum standard andassessed to agreed criteria on all

While the QualityAssurance Scheme is not compulsory,the rating is a sign of quality and isdesigned to give you confidence inthe accommodation you book.VisitEngland and the AAs starratings are the official signs ofquality for accommodation. Theseare awarded following annualassessments by trained, impartialassessors. Annual visits are made togive up-to-date assurance of whatto expect. All participatingestablishments are awarded

    Buses are a highly accessible way totravel; all of Londons 8,000 buses

    GOING GREEN

    The most environmentally friendlyway of getting around the city is onfoot or by bike. Walking is one of thebest ways of getting a feel for thecity and most major landmarks are

    Opening Hours

    Shops are generally open Mondaysto Saturdays, from 10.00-18.00,although some central stores stayopen until 20.00-21.00 and laterstill on Thursdays. On Sundays manyshops open from midday to 16.00.Visitor attractions and museumstypically open daily from 10.00-18.00,although most close for a couple ofdays during the Christmas holidays.

    Tipping

    If youve received good service,whether in a restaurant, caf orhotel, it is quite normal to leave atip of 10 per cent of the total bill.

    Central London

    Londons heart is made up ofmany districts from the iconicCity of Westminster to the City ofLondon, the main financial area ofthe capital. This central area has adense concentration of landmarks,theatres, museums, nightspots andfamous shopping areas like CoventGarden, Carnaby Street andOxford Street.

    North London

    Over 120 languages are spoken inthis multicultural and vibrant region,which is steeped in history andrenowned for its culture. Areas ofinterest include Hampstead Heathand Primrose Hill with their hugegreen spaces, fabulous views andvillage feel, characterful Camdenwith its eclectic market and livemusic scene, and Green Lanes,where you can enjoy Turkish,Greek and Kurdish food.

    South London

    The South is appreciated forits array of open spaces suchas Clapham Common, the WorldHeritage Site at Greenwich andriverside Richmond. Its popular forsporting attractions such as theWimbledon Lawn Tennis Museumand cricket at the Brit Oval. It offerswonderful opportunities to escapefrom the hustle and bustle, from the

    East London

    West London

    West London is remarkable for itsleafy squares, fascinating museumsand vibrant street markets. Here youwill find upmarket Kensington andChelsea, the peaceful streets andcanals of Maida Vale, Hammersmith,which is home to some great riversidepubs, and the vibrant, multiculturalcommunities of Shepherds Bushand Southall.

    The Oyster card is Londons travel smartcard andgenerally the easiest way to pay for journeys onbus, Tube, tram, DLR, London Overground andNational Rail services in London. You can use yourOyster to either store period Travelcards or BusPasses (for 7 days or longer), or you can use payas you go for single journeys. With pay as you goyou can travel as many times as you like in a dayand the daily price cap means that youll neverpay more than the cost of an equivalent One DayTravelcard. Your Oyster card never expires so consider keeping it for your next visit.

    If you are only in London for a short time, try a Visitor Oyster card. Visitor Oystercards are pre-loaded with pay as you go credit and can be purchased before youarrive in London from National Express Coaches, Gatwick Express, Stansted Express,Eurostar, and easyJet services. You can also get them online atvisitorshop.tfl.gov.uk. To buy or top-up your Oyster card visit any Tube station,Travel Information Centre listed on page 4, or any of the 4,000 Oyster ticket stopsaround London.

    To use your Oyster card, touch it flat on the yellow reader at the star t and end ofevery journey, except on buses and trams where you only need to touch in at thestart of your journey.     TICKETS TO TRAVEL

    London Underground

    There are 11 colour-codedUnderground or Tube lines. Servicesrun regularly from around 05.00 to00.30 (Sun 07.30 to 23.30) on mostroutes. The network is divided intonine zones, with Zone 1 being themost central area. See page 8 for theTube and Rail Map.

    London Buses

    Buses generally run from 05.00to 00.30. Night Buses operate onmany major routes from aroundmidnight to 05.00, and someroutes operate a 24-hour service.Cash fares are not available for buspassengers in Zone 1, thereforepassengers must obtain a validticket or Oyster card before boarding.Some routes are especially good forsightseeing including routes 9 and15 which use heritage Routemasterbuses during the day.

    Taxi

    River Services

    Travelling on the river can be arelaxing way to travel acrossLondon whilst taking in the sights.For information go to tfl.gov.uk/riveror pick up the River Services leafletfrom Tube stations.

    Cycling

    There are more than 4,000km ofroutes for cycling in London and thecity is one of Europes fastest growing

    Walking

    Walking in London is a great wayto get around. What's more, for short

    National Rail

    There are 13 major National Rail

    stations in London. Paddingtonserves the West Country, Wales andthe South Midlands. Liverpool Streetand Fenchurch Street serve EastAnglia and Essex. Euston, KingsCross, St. Pancras and Maryleboneserve the Midlands, North andcentral Britain, and St. PancrasInternational is the station forEurostar services. Charing Cross,Cannon Street, Blackfriars, Waterloo,London Bridge and Victoria servesouthern England.     Use the Tube outside themorning and afternoon rush

    hours to avoid crowded trainsand platforms. Or perhaps takeadvantage of the River Services!

    The National Rail system isextensive, especially southof the river, and is sometimesthe quickest way to reachdestinations.

    Walking can often be quickerin central London than takingthe Tube between two adjacentstops. For example, the walkbetween Leicester Squareand Covent Garden is justa few minutes.

    DocklandsLight Railway

    Docklands Light Railway (DLR)runs from 05.30-00.30 Monday toFriday and 06.30-23.30 on Sunday.There are trains every 4-10 minutesrunning on routes from Bank andTower Gateway to Docklands, Eastand South East London. Take theDLR to visit Canary Wharf, CuttySark for Maritime Greenwich,

    ExCeL London exhibition centre orLondon City Airport.
