FdA/BA (Hons) Airline and Airport Management These specialist courses offer you an excellent combination of academiclearning and practical industry-focused study, through a one year workplacement. This combination of knowledge, skills and experience leads toexcellent employment opportunities within the global aviation industry.

Course overviewAccredited by the Institute of Travel and Tourism,this course is centred around two of the mostdynamic management sectors of the travel and tourism industry: airlines and airports. It islocated within a few miles of the world’s busiestinternational airport, Heathrow and is designed to give you the practical experience you need to complement your academic studies.

The first year of the course provides a focus on the structure, nature and operating characteristicsof the international aviation industry. You will learn about contemporary industry issues and the decision-making processes integral to the airline and airport business.

In your final year you will develop your knowledge of airline and airport operations management as well as investigating the main issues which influence theindustry. You will have the opportunity to chooseoptional modules, to allow you to tailor the course to suit your interests. You will also complete a dissertation based on an area of particular interest to you.

Throughout the course, we will deliver a range of management related modules to support yoursubject specific studies. You will learn about sales andmarketing and managing people, which will provideyou with the core knowledge to work successfullywithin the aviation business environment.

Course overviewOn this course, you will develop a range of kitchentechniques, including working with pastry. Thesetechnical skills will be supported by other non-practicalmodules including Microbiology, Nutrition andGastronomy. You will also undertake a range ofmanagement modules, such as RestaurantManagement and Food and Beverage Management,to help you to develop the business skills needed tobecome a successful manager within the industry.

To support your practical studies, you will undertakea four to six week work placement at the end ofyour first and second years. The placement will beundertaken in a well recognised establishment,where you will be able to practice your technicaland professional skills.

Throughout the course, you will be encouraged to take part in a range of activities outside of the classrooms and kitchens, including enteringnational and international competitions, exhibitingat events and industry visits. Course overviewThis course provides an opportunity for you todevelop skills in event management. It focuses on the key event practices and principles to giveyou an understanding of how events are plannedand developed, how to win bids for event contractsand the design techniques used to create eventexperiences. You will learn how to plan andmanage events at community, national andinternational levels in areas such as exhibitions,brand experiences, sports awards, ceremonies,festivals, weddings and conferences.

Course overviewThis course takes a practical approach to give you knowledge of the theories and concepts thatunderpin professional cookery. It is based on a classical foundation, combined with moderncooking trends and techniques. Course overviewOn these courses, you’ll develop the specialist skills and knowledge needed for managementwithin the international hotel industry. You willlearn about the management of internationalhotel products and services and in the final yearyou will develop a strategic approach to hotelmanagement within the constantly changingglobal environment.

You will learn how to effectively manage resources,people and information. In addition, we willencourage you to develop valuable transferableskills such as teamwork, problem solving, decision-making and time management, as well as presentation, analytical and IT skills.

If you’re studying the FdA or the BA (Hons), you will undertake a one year work placement. The work placement can be undertaken in any sector of the hospitality industry, either in the UK or abroad, and will provide you with essential experience and knowledge of working within the industry.

Foundation degree students will complete Levels 4 and 5 of the course, and will have theopportunity to top-up to the BA (Hons) onsuccessful completion (based on grade pointaverage). Those undertaking the BA (Hons) will study Level 4 through to Level 6.
