    Thinking of tomorrow today

We want to ensure that the London 2012 Olympic andParalympic Games are remembered, not only as a summerof fantastic sport, but as the catalyst for long-term benefitsacross the UK.

The Games also o er a unique opportunity to change andregenerate one o the most underdeveloped areas in eastLondon. We are trans orming the Lower Lea Valley into an urbanenvironment or the diverse and vibrant community that will live, work and play in the area a ter 2012.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) is undertaking the irstphase o the physical development o the Olympic Park andthe surrounding area. We are clearing the site, creating a newpark, moving the overhead powerlines underground, buildingnew world-class sporting venues, and installing new utilities andtransport in rastructure.

The second phase is being led by the London DevelopmentAgency (LDA) on an interim basis. The LDA is developingplans or how the Park will be used a ter the Games: to createa stunning new district or London; provide excellent sports

acilities a ter the Games; and link with surrounding areas tocreate lasting change or east London.

The two phases are closely linked, with venues and parklands

being designed with their long-term use in mind. In everythingwe are doing, we are thinking o tomorrow today.

    overground

ParklandsWe are developing a large area o newparklands to regenerate this part o eastLondon, revive the Lower Lea Valley andcreate better connections between thecommunities surrounding the Olympic Park.

A ter the Games the parklands will provideover 100 hectares o public open space. They will be a signi icant venue orsporting, social and cultural events, as wellas providing a major new parkland area

or local residents and visitors to enjoy.

The parklands will include 45 hectareso new habitats or wildli e, includingwetlands, woodlands and grasslands.

Overhead powerlinesWe are taking down the 52 overheadelectricity pylons that currently dominatethe skyline in and around the OlympicPark, now that the power carried acrossthe Park has been switched to the newunderground powerlines (see below).

This will clear the way or theconstruction across the Park and helpto open up the land to create the newOlympic Park.

Energy A new Energy Centre (pictured) andPrimary Substation are being built atKings Yard in the west o the OlympicPark. These will provide e icient power, heating and cooling systems to supportthe local communities and businesseslocated in the area a ter 2012.

A new wind turbine will be installedat Eton Manor in the north o the Parkto contribute renewable energy to theneeds o the area.

Powerline tunnelsWe have already completed one o thebiggest tunnelling projects in Europe.

Two 6km tunnels have been dug underthe Olympic Park, so that the powerlinesthat were carried between Hackney andWest Ham substations by more than 50pylons could be moved underground(see above).

This will open up the land or theconstruction o venues and in rastructureacross the Olympic Park.

    Stratford City

We are making a signi icantcontribution to utilities, bridges andtransport in rastructure or the newStrat ord City development, which willbe in the east o the Olympic Park.

This new retail, leisure and o ice

development is a key building blockin the long-term regeneration oeast London.

Olympic VillageWe are building around 3,000 high-quality homes, with a mix o a ordablehousing, and housing or sale and rent.

The development will also include:new parks, public squares and openspaces; education acilities or all

ages; and healthcare and multi-usecommunity acilities. During the Gamesthe new acilities will orm the OlympicVillage and accommodate thousandso athletes and o icials.

A ter the Games the development willorm part o the overall Strat ord City

regeneration scheme, which includes newretail, leisure and o ice areas (see le t).

    Sporting venues

We are building new world-classsporting venues, including theAquatics Centre, Olympic Stadiumand VeloPark (pictured).

A ter hosting a antastic summer osport in 2012, these venues willprovide acilities or elite athletes andthe local community, inspiring uturegenerations to take part in sport and,

or some, to become the championso tomorrow.

    Waterways

We are revitalising much o the8km o waterways in or close to theOlympic Park to enhance the naturalenvironment and create new greencorridors or wildli e.

This included building 550m o newriver walls. The waterways will beused to transport construction materialsto and waste rom the site by barge, reducing the amount o constructiontra ic on local roads.

UtilitiesWe are installing an entirely new utilitiesnetwork beneath the Olympic Park site. This wiring will create the backboneneeded to support the long-termdevelopment o the area.

We are removing, diverting ordisconnecting existing pipes, cables andother in rastructure and building commonutility trenches or the our new utilitynetworks across the Park (gas, electricity, water and telecommunications).

Together with a new Energy Centre (seele t), these will serve the local communities

and developments in the area a ter 2012,as well as the venues during the Games.

BridgesWe are building more than 30 newbridges mainly pedestrian tospan the rivers and railway lines thatcurrently run through the Olympic Parkand the surrounding area.

We are planning or the long term rom

the very beginning: building permanentnew bridges to meet the needs o thearea a ter the Games and addingtemporary structures to carry largenumbers o visitors during the Games.

The permanent bridges will createnew connections across the Park andnew links between local communitiesa ter 2012.

Transport We are trans orming one o the mostpoorly connected areas o London intoone o the best connected. Togetherwith our transport delivery partnerswe are delivering improvements to theUnderground, rail, and the DocklandsLight Railway (DLR).

These physical enhancements includetrebling the capacity and increasingaccessibility at Strat ord RegionalStation (pictured) and extendingthe DLR under the River Thames toWoolwich Arsenal.

The road and path network providedor the Games will orm the basisor the pedestrian, cycling and road

network in the Park a terwards. Byholding a public transport Games we

also want to change peoples attitudesto travel and encourage them to useenvironmentally sustainable and activetransport, such as walking and cycling,to get to major events in the uture.

    Sewer system

We are building a new pumpingstation and 1.8km o oul sewer tunnelsunderneath the Olympic Park.

These will collect, convey and dischargeoul waste into the mains sewer system, rom residential developments on the

Park a ter 2012, as well as rom venuesand buildings during the Games.

Cleaning soilWe are cleaning up a highlycontaminated part o London as wetrans orm a ormer industrial area intoa large area o new parklands.

Across the site around 1.8 million

cubic metres o soil is being excavated, cleaned where necessary and used tocreate a new landscape.

Giant soil washing machines (pictured)are washing, sieving and shakingout pollutants including petrol, oil, tarand heavy metals. In the north o theOlympic Park, 70,000 cubic metres oindustrial and domestic waste rom

a 100-year-old land ill site is beingseparated so it can be reused on thePark or recycled elsewhere.
