Priority Issue Solid waste disposal and beautification of the Savan Community
Goal
The goal is to re-awaken a sense of pride among the residents of the Savan Community.
Objective(s)
1. Educate residents on the history of Savan, and the importance of preserving it.
2. Raise the level of awareness among Virgin Islanders, specifically Savaneros, about dumping waste, littering and crime in
Savan.
3. Involve residents and community partners in removing trash from within the community.
4. Involve residents in creating and maintaining a community garden.
5. Provide skilled volunteers to assist in light repairs and beautification of homes in the area. Written permission from owners is
required.
6. Provide residents with onsite resources of services.
7. Create community a watch program led by community residents in partnership with local law enforcement agency.
8. Provide a re-dedication of the Savan Community to the Savan residents by elected officials.
9. Mobilize local nonprofit organizations; begin providing services and implementing programs within Savan.

Activities
Research, identify and document areas of need via visual images. Create an online presence via social media showcasing the areas of identified need in Savan and to stimulate interest and
create awareness of community needs. Hold community meetings in Savan to gather a sense of community needs from local residents.
Implement beginning stages of community garden-identify location, secure volunteers to manage location and obtain
approval for site via the Cooperative Extension.
Involve the media, invite media from the beginning stages throughout duration of project implementation.
Action Items: We need to fully discuss and share the proposal with the above mentioned community partners, specifically the lead partners identified to include: Department of Economic Development, Department of Parks & Recreation, UVI Cooperative Extension, Sankofa Saturdays and E.A.S.T. We must secure written commitments from all partners as well as written commitments from other community partners providing services and/or products to further this project’s mission. All written commitments are due no later than Friday June 19, 2015.
The Savan Basketball court must be reserved via Dept. of Parks & Rec. We will need to reserve for July 8-25th
(I have contacted Ms. Dewitt at this office and will follow up with the assistance commissioner of this dept. on 5/20/15.)
We will need to check for special events permitting if required.
Public Safety must be onsite during the entire duration of project.

OVERVIEW
This component will be led by Community Action NOW! In partnership with community partners.
DAY 1 (7-8am) Volunteer orientation- BASKETBALL COURT, lower court.
(8-12pm) Area of primary focus: Savan Ghut. All volunteers will be dispatched to remove trash from GHUT area.
Day 2-4-Volunteers will be dispatched in groups of 10 to cover the areas identified below:
Additional area of focus. The general clean-up zone in common area starts from the top of Hill Street @ The Danish Chalet going
down the stairs located directly across from Danish Chalet straight down and ending at the beginning of the Market Square. Starting
at the Danish Chalet making a left down Hill Street reaching every street leading down towards and passing Jane E.Tuitt to include
basketball court, behind court leading back around going towards the old Red Ball and ending at the beginning of the Market
Square. We are removing trashing from common areas ONLY, unless written permission is granted by home owner. (Private
property, with written permission, will be assisted only if property is in SEVERE need of assistance.)
ACTION ITEMS
Orientation must provide continental b-fast for volunteers. (Bagel, fruit and coffee/tea) – must be set-up by 6am. Need in-
kind donation of for breakfast for 100 volunteers.
Local law enforcement unit must be onsite during clean-up project
Paramedic/Fire unit must be onsite at all times during clean-up
Materials Needed
o Gloves for volunteers (At least 2,000 pairs in various sizes)
o Safety vests for volunteers- 250–one size fits all

o Bottled water – 1,800 bottles of water (3 bottles per volunteer per day)

OVERVIEW
This component will be led by Community Action NOW! In partnership with E.A.S.T.
One on one basketball tournament will be used as main attraction (we can use local youth teams and/or local talent to market this
day).
Keep in mind this is the VI Music fest weekend so we can also use local artists that will be on the island to support this event.
DJ (must have PA system w/microphone) – local radio station is preferred
Children’s games, clown, face painting, carnival games like sack hop
Pop corn and cotton candy vendor, snow cones etc. (mostly food vendors giving out samples)
Free hotdogs and drinks for community - We can use local elected officials to grill hot dogs and give out to community
members (beef and turkey hot dogs only), it would be good to have salt fish pate’ as well for vegetarians. This community
has a large population of vegetarians and vegans.
Onsite will be youth focused organizations (10 total)
In addition, we will have a fire truck onsite allowing children to view the fire truck and take pictures with firemen.
The Fire Unit will also provide free fire detectors for homes.
A Police Unit will be onsite with free giveaways for community members including information on how to start a
community watch program.
Action Items:
All vendors must be set-up no later than 8:30 a.m. Set-up begins at 7:00 a.m.
Clean-up must begin promptly at 12:00pm and completed by 1pm. A committee must be set up specifically for this. (Vendor
packet will be forwarded by Community Action NOW Inc. to each vendor).
All vendors must provide written confirmation of commitment. In-kind donations from each vendor must accommodate at
least 100 people per vendor. Vendors are encouraged to provide sample portions of food donations.
If vendors require electricity, they must provide their own generators.
Vendor tables are not to exceed 4 feet in length.
Parking must be considered and coordinated with Jane E.Tuitt Elementary School.

OVERVIEW
This component will be led by Community Action NOW! In
partnership with the Economic Development Empowerment Zone,
Sankofa Saturdays and UVI Cooperative Extension Office.
Skilled volunteers and companies providing in-kind donations
of services are needed.
o Volunteers in this area include community citizens,
painters, carpenters, electricians and companies such as
HOME DEPOT and other hardware stores.
Food vendors as volunteers are also needed to provide
in-kind donations of food for volunteers.
UVI Cooperative Extension will provide onsite assistance in the
development of a community garden as a component of the restoration
project. The location is currently pending submission for final
approval. Should UVI’s Cooperative extension find another location
within the community that is best fit for a community garden, the
community garden will be located at that site.
The current proposed site is located at the Savan BasketBall court in
the upper court area. See addendum starting on page 13.
The garden will be maintained by community members. The primary
contact and volunteer for the Community Garden is Mr. Nixon
Andrew, Garden Committee Chair. Mr. Nixon resides in the Savan
area. Currently, he holds an undergraduate degree in Agriculture, has
expressed his passion for gardening and would like to obtain
additional training opportunities. We believe Mr. Andrew is the
perfect person to lead in this area!
Community Action NOW will work side by side with Mr. Nelson in
creating long term objectives that will help maintain the daily and
ongoing maintenance of the community garden.
Action Items for Clean-Community Garden
C.A.N. must recruit volunteers within community to
serve as the point of contact for Community Garden
C.A.N. must ensure that volunteers within Savan are
capable of maintaining garden long term.
Volunteers will be identified and committee secured
by June 15, 2015.

30 local nonprofit organizations, grass roots organizations, government departments, community and spiritual leaders are invited to
attend along with community members. 10 additional food vendors are encouraged to attend providing free snacks and food
samples. These organizations are invited to provide resources on the services in which they provide that benefit the community.
Mobile health clinics providing FREE Aids testing, BP and diabetes testing are encouraged to attend as well organizations providing
resources for the homeless, mental health and veterans services. Each organization is allowed to bring one 4ft table to showcase
information from their organization and bring handouts and freebies for at least 200 attendees.
The media is invited to attend this event. Media coverage will be provided.
Ribbon cutting ceremony and re-dedication ceremony will take place at 11am SHARP. This ceremony will be conducted in
partnership with community leaders, elected officials and residents of the community. This ceremony will be led by Community
Action NOW! Inc., The Department of Economic Development, Sankofa Saturdays and UVI Cooperative Extension. The Master of
Ceremony to be invited will be Gov. Mapp.
