David Grodberg is ahappy man: the2008 dental meeting

he organizes with local den-tist François Clous was abig success. “We had 53dentists, the most we’veever had for one week, witha total of 118 people includ-ing families,” he explains. In past years there has beena second week of the dentalgathering but Grodbergsays that was simply “tooexhausting.” This year’sguest speaker was Dr. LouGraham who spoke on thetopic of “Recent Innovations inRestorative Dentistry,” during theweek of January 21-25. “Peopleattended almost every session, hewas a great speaker,” nods Grodbergin appreciation. This year was also challenging innew ways: the host hotel for themeeting since its inception had beenThe Christopher in Pointe Milou, which closed last spring, leavingGrodberg to find new meeting facili-ties and deal with a potential housingcrisis. “Half of the dentists used tostay at the Christopher, there was areal sense of camaraderie there. Theycould sit by the pool and discuss den-tistry.” This year many of the dentistswere in villas (Grodberg worked withSibarth, Marla, and The New

Agency) as well as hotels such as Vil-lage Saint Jean, the Tropical, andEmeraude Plage. The new meetingspace was the meeting room at theCapitainerie, next to the Port officeson the main dock in Gustavia. “It waswonderful there, very comfortable, and in a dramatic location,” saysGrodberg. “We had a wine-tasting—wines from Le Gout de Vin with horsd’oeuvres from the Wall House—for80 people with the French doors openonto the terrace overlooking theport.” There was also a dinner for 86at Le Tamarin. “Cooking for 86 peo-ple at the same time can be hard,”says Grodberg, “it was lovely thereunder the trees, with live music anddancing. Everybody loved it.”The 2008 dental conference sold outquickly, with many repeat customers.

“They love the beauty of the island, and the safety here,” points out Grod-berg, “as well as the quality of thespeakers. During the year I get anaverage of two letters per week fromdentists who would like to speakhere. The attendees also get seethings from a broader scope: special-ists hear about what’s going on in therest of the profession.” Next year’s dates have been set: Janu-ary 19-23, 2009 with Gary M.Reiser,DDS, speaking on the “Planning &Surgical Treating Site SpecificRestorative Based Periodontal Prob-lems.” Details can be found atwww.stbarthdental.com (a site creat-ed by dentist Richard Weledniger, who attends the conference everyyear). Smile!

The body of 52 year-old Jean-Luc Nony was found onWednesday, January 23, a lit-

tle before noon, in the bay of SaintJean. Employees at Nikki Beachfound the body and pulled it aboardtheir dinghy in order to bring it backto the beach where firemen tried invain for a good half hour to revivethe victim via cardiac massage. Therestaurant staff as well as the fire-men had been alerted by a witness atthe Eden Rock who noted a man indifficulty, hanging on to a buoyabout 300 feet from the shore, alter-nating gestures of distress with signsof drowning. When his bag wasfound on the deserted beach laterthat evening, it was possible to iden-tify the victim. According to thepolice, the man was a Parisiannotary, alone on vacation for aweek, and who became ill while inthe water, but they did not indicate ifhis death was due to a physical

problem (such as a heart attack) orfrom drowning. The body was sentback to France on Tuesday orWednesday.

Strong Currents This Time Of Year

No matter what caused this particu-lar death, fire chief Jean-LouisDanet reminds us that at this time ofyear, the bays of Saint Jean andLorient are subject to very strongunderwater currents and swimmersshould be especially prudent inproximity to the coral reefs. Henotes that unless you are a verystrong swimmer, it is better to staycloser to the shore. According to our archives, the lastdrowning in Saint Barthélemy tookplace in 2002 when an Americancitizen, an 82 year-old woman, drowned near the small island ofFourchue while snorkeling along thecoast.

OOO, A French AssociationTo Support Barack Obama

Created on January 7, 2008, OOO -Overseas Obama Organization- is anew French association of overseas

residents whose sole goal is to supportBarack Obama in his quest of the Democ-ratic nomination for the US presidentialelections set to take place next November.Christian Bidonnot, publisher of Top Dom(the “who’s who” of overseas France resi-dents), is the creator of the group, whosemembers, for the time being, are but few.But the association hopes to attract politi-cal, economic, and cultural decision mak-ers from the French overseas departmentsand territories in order to form an Afro-French Diaspora that would lend moraland media support to the black candidate,as well as promote the French overseasregions to Americans. Among its plannedactivities, OOO hopes to organize a firsttrip to the Democratic Convention in Den-ver, Colorado, this summer, and in case ofan Obama victory, to the inaugural cere-monies in Washington, D.C.

Leaf through up acopy of this year’sPure magazine, and

you’ll see a beautiful, smil-ing photograph of DavidHenderson, hotel managerextraordinaire. Whether youmet him in the old days atAutour du Rocher or morerecently at the Toiny, wherehe is just finishing a 15-yeartenure as manager of the 4-star Relais & Chateauxhotel, he has been a manabout the island for sometime. “I came for the firsttime in 1982 when my sisterWendy was living in SaintBarth,” he recalls. By theearly 80s, he had been inhotel management since theage of 17 in his native Scot-land, but found he was tooyoung to be promoted anyfurther at that time. “Afriend of mine showed me aplace on Cooper Island nearTortola. From there I wentto see my sister in SaintBarth, which I’d neverheard of at the time,” hesays. “I didn’t want any-thing to do with hotels, somy first job was paintingthe roof of the Tamarinrestaurant.” From there,Henderson took a job atAutour du Rocher, a smallnightclub and offbeat hotelthat burned down in 1991.“I ran it for the owners thenleased it from 1983-1991,”he notes. Talking to Hender-son about Autour du Rocheris like turning back thepages in the history book ofSaint Barth, with names likeLarry Gray and Jimmy Buf-fett popping up. “An electri-cal fixture behind the DJbooth had faulty wiring andthat’s where the fire start-ed,” he explains. Throughhis friend, Xavier David (alocal building engineer),Henderson got a job at

Hibiscus, a restaurant/smallhotel in Gustavia. “I putmoney into it, then foundout I’d been paying thewrong people and came inone day and it was allsealed up,” he says. ThenXavier David told Hender-son about a new hotel inToiny, and he was hiredthere as assistant manager, then was promoted to fullmanager when LaurieSmith, the manager, wentback to the UK. “I got thejob by default,” he says, noting that the job lastedfrom 1996 through the endof January 2008 (the Toinywas sold to a group ofAmerican investors in2006). For the past fewyears, in partnership withSmith (who runs 22 JermynStreet, a boutique hotel inLondon, UK), Hendersonhas been leasing and run-ning another small hotel inSaint Barth—Les Islets dela Plage in Saint Jean—through another lead fromXavier David. “He is mypatron saint,” says Hender-son. “At Les Islets, which Ihad never even heard ofuntil then, we found St.Barth as it was back then. It’s a great place with a

huge, repeat clientele. Peo-ple have been coming backfor more than 20 years.” But now that the Toinyexperience is behind him, what is next for Henderson?Does his future still haveSaint Barth in the cards?

”The island is changing somuch, it’s so much moremoney-oriented,” he says.“In the old days it didn’tmatter if you had two dol-lars or two million dollars.Today there is no housingfor the personnel and thecost of living is so high.” Yetwith his partner, Laurent, and his dog Rusty, Hender-son is a very private personwho has enjoyed over 25years on the island, in whathe refers to “as my own pri-vate world.” Currently inScotland collecting histhoughts, Henderson will beback on the island soon. With three business proposi-tions on the table, my bet ishe’ll soon be back in thesaddle at the start of anotherSaint Barth adventure.

First came majorwork to get thesanitary systems

up to new codes, thenthe 3-star hotel, VillageSaint Jean, embraced anew look and newamenities: the parkingarea has been redone, and the deck aroundthe pool is larger andmore private. At theheart of this recent ren-ovation is a superbnew building made ofIpé, a tropical wood, and glass, which hous-es the hotel’s spa/gym. Thistwo-level space has beenbaptized the “well-beingcottage,” and was built onthe foundation of their for-mer boutique, and is quitefrankly a great success. Theinitial idea for its designcame from Bertrand

Charneau, owner of thehotel along with his motherGaby and his sister Cather-ine. They worked in collab-oration with designer AlainAupy, who gave form tothis unique building inSaint Barth, which blendsso well with its environ-ment thanks to the glass

panels that reflect its imme-diate surroundings. Thefirst level is dedicated to arelaxation room, very Zen,used for massage andfacial treatments, given byfive partners selected bythe hotel, as well as forprivate yoga or stretchingclasses. Upstairs is a clas-sic gym, with weights andworkout machines as wellas a view of St Jean bay:you can ride the stationarybike looking out at the lit-tle island of Bonhomme:ah, paradise! Services arefor clients as well as resi-dents. The parking area of thehotel has been repavedwith warm-toned stonesfound nearby: elegant, nat-ural, and unassuming. Per-golas in wood will be cov-

ered with flora(bougainvillea plantsare rapidly growing) tooffer shade as well asembellish the parkingarea and screen thepool deck, which hasbeen completelyredone. The pool itselfwas retiled in small, dark blue mosaic, while the decks wereenlarged and made ofIpé for a fresh, newlook. And for thosewho like to playpétanque, a small

boules court has been putin for a little relaxation inthe evening.
