RMAS SUCCESS - REPORT OF PROCEEDINGS JANUARY 1991 Sir, 1.(U) . I have the honour to report the proceedings of HMA Ship under my command during the month of January 1991. 2-(R) Throughout the major part of January, SUCCESS remained deployed as an element of Task Group 627.4 under the command of Commodore C.J. Oxenbould RAN. The task group (TG) operated with other Multi National Naval Forces (WSNF) ships supporting oper~tions against Iraq. These operations continued after the commencement of hostilities against Iraq on Thursday 17 and c ~ m p l e t e df o r SUCCESS when s h e d e p a r t e d t h e Area of Operations on Friday 25, enroute to Singapore. During January SUCCESS conducted a short port visit to Dubai and called very briefly at Muscat t o -- .... - -. -- of fload .stores -and equipment. She commenced--a -programmed- v i s i t t o Singapore on Thursday 31 for urgent defect rectification. 3. (R) At the beginning of the .month.SUCCESS was outside Omani territorial waters north east of the Island of Yasirah, continuing her passage to the Arabian Gulf after having conducted a delightful but short Christmas port visit to Victoria, on the Seychelles island of Mahe. As the ship proceeded deeper into the AO, the tempo .of helicopter surveillance operations and the challenging and reporting of merchant ship traffic in support of sanctions against Iraq increased significantly. After a fast passage the ship loitered'north of Seeb on the afternoon of Tuesday 1, while the ship's helicopter sortied into the International Airport to collect TG mail and stores. Further stores and fresh victuals were delivered to the ship by Gray Mackenzie boat after anchoring at 0531D on Wednesday 2 in the Fujayrah service anchorage, in position 25'11 'ON ~6~29'0~. After three delivery runs from inshore SUCCESS weighed and proceeded at 1105D, and transited the Straits of Hor-muz (SOH) from 1600D. Once clear of the straits SUCCESS made g r o u n d towards the 'Charlie' patrol areas in the Central Arabian Gulf (CAG 1, making rendezvous with BRISBANE- at 0534C on Thursday 3. She remained in company long enough for mail, stores, victuals and fuel to be transferred before..detachi'l$g at 07.2AC..-- Qur.. f ixslt..foreign.. . ..

16.(U) Except for a brief period during the forenoon of Tuesday 12, when she was moved cold to and from 3 and 3A buoys where she disembarked ship's ammunition, SUCCESS has remained at the NEFOW undergoing a leave period, self mainte~iance and also, commencing pre- refit preparations. During the few days commencing Tuesday 12 command handover has been conducted and I have taken the opportunity to host a few low key lunch and evening social functions with mid level friends of SUCCESS to mark my, imminent departure. At 1130K on Thursday 14 I was 'rowed ashore' in true SUCCESS style, by light jackstay. At 2359K on Thursday 14 I relinquished command to Captain Ramsay.

17. At the end of the reporting period SUCCESS remained berthed at the NEFOW, Garden Island Dockyard. The health and welfare of my ship's-company is very good and I am convinced that their morale is unlikely to be surpassed following their small but notable contribution to the liberation of Kuwaitand the subsequent triumphant, generous and understanding welcome home by their families, other members of the ADF and the people of Australia.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant. H

Eaptain RAN Commanding Officer
