Photometric stereo systems use single cameras and sophisticated lighting and lighting controllers to illuminate the object’s surface and discern features such as engraved, embossed, or raised characters. The direction of the incident illumination is varied between successive images taken by a single camera. The reflected light then provides sufficient information to determine the 3D surface orientation at each image point.
