My tutor was fantastic and I could not wish for a better tutor. She took her time to explain everything and if I did not get it straight away, within 5 minutes I would.

I have been in the UK for 11 years but it is the first time I feel confident in the simplest of written tasks, like filling out forms.

LLC has been a good experience. Being able to attend each week and speak with my classmate takes me away from everyday life.

“Quotes to go here

I was getting really bored at home and wanted much more for myself and my four children. By this time of my life I had concentrated so much on bringing up my children I had forgot about me, but I knew deep down that sitting down at home was not working for me. I looked for jobs but lacked confidence.

I was really interested in mental health and addictions and asked if Kaleidoscope in Kingston still take on volunteers. I started work experience the following week where I helped with paperwork, clerical duties and even when the work experience ended I stayed on as a volunteer enjoying learning all about Health and Social Care. My employers then offered me the chance to join the company as an apprentice and do my NVQ level 2 in Health and Social Care which they were able to fund.

I went and joined the hostel staff as a seasonal worker and after completing my NVQ Level 2 I was interviewed for a permanent role and signed up for my NVQ Level 3. I found this hard work but very rewarding as I felt lucky to still have the support from my Employer and I could had not of wished for a better Assessor from London Learning Consortium. Without my Assessor’s support I could have never have gotten through.

The best thing to come out of this is that my self-esteem and confidence have grown so much. I have been so lucky and I feel like I have grown as a person with the support of some wonderful people. I get up every morning and look forward to a job I love. I also hope that I can help and support people in the way special people like my Assessor from London Learning Consortium helped me.

“Working with the young carers directly was an extremely humbling experience to say the least; these are young people who, like anyone else, just want to have fun and be a child – but because of their caring roles they often don’t get the chance to do this.

Making a start on the Units of the NVQ, I initially felt quite overwhelmed as I hadn’t studied in a long time and therefore had ‘lost’ a great deal of the self-motivation skills that were so crucial to have in order to complete a course like this. However once I got into it, and had begun to do my own research into the topics included in the Units, I became much more focused and started really enjoying it.

I started to become better at disciplining myself and became addicted to the ‘high’ I got every time I completed a section of the NVQ and saw those all-important words “CRITERIA MET” at the end of each progress sheet. I was learning so much – and I was thoroughly enjoying it! I found myself chatting away to my parents and friends about the things I was learning, found myself talking more confidently to my colleagues as I became more knowledgeable, and found myself interacting much more effectively and positively with the young people.

I now feel proud to be able to say that I have finally completed an NVQ Level 2 in Youth Work Practice and passed it – and the exams! I cannot really think of the right words to explain what it means to me to have achieved this; for some people it may just be a ‘Level 2’ but to me it means the world.”
